My father is a retired Army Veteran who served in the military for 23 years encompassing 9 deployments, including 3 combat tours. He retired in 2013 and serves our community as an educator now. He was a teacher, coach, assistant principal and finally settled into a nearby school district as a Director of Bus Transportation. My mother has served as a dedicated military spouse and mother of four children for most of my life. She is our foundation, constantly being there through thick and thin, regardless of the situation. When our father was deployed, she assumed all of the responsibilities to run our home, keep us in line, and comfort us when we struggled in his absence. Our family is very close, and we have been through a lot. My father’s return from multiple deployments made things difficult for our family. His readjustment made it difficult for everyone because he had to make a significant adjustment when he was honorably discharged. We are thankful for the countless sacrifices he made to serve our country and we are equally thankful for the counseling and adjustments he made for us. As I approach post-secondary education, I realize the support network and wealth of knowledge and experience I receive from my parents. They are supportive and encouraging while avoiding being judgmental.
