Learner Calculus Scholarship
Calculus is a branch of mathematics that deals with the study of change. It is one of the most fundamental areas of mathematics, and it has applications in a wide variety of fields, including science, engineering, and economics.
Calculus is used to study the rate of change of a function. For example, if you are given a function that describes the position of a moving object, you can use calculus to find the object's velocity, which is the rate at which its position is changing. Calculus can also be used to find the acceleration of an object, which is the rate at which its velocity is changing.
In addition to studying the rate of change of a function, calculus can also be used to find the area under a curve. This is a useful application in many fields, such as physics, engineering, and economics. For example, if you are given a function that describes the cost of producing a certain number of items, you can use calculus to find the total cost of producing those items.
Calculus is also used to study the behavior of curves. For example, you can use calculus to find the maximum and minimum values of a function. This can be useful in fields such as physics, engineering, and economics. For example, if you are given a function that describes the profit that a company can make from selling a certain number of items, you can use calculus to find the number of items that the company should sell in order to maximize its profit.
Calculus is a powerful tool that has a wide range of applications in STEM fields. It is a fundamental branch of mathematics that is essential for understanding many of the concepts that are used in these fields. Therefore, STEM students need to have a strong understanding of calculus.
Here are some specific examples of how calculus is used in STEM fields. In physics, calculus is used to study the motion of objects, the forces acting on objects, and the flow of fluids. In engineering, calculus is used to design and analyze structures, machines, and electrical circuits. In economics, calculus is used to study the behavior of markets and to make predictions about economic trends.
Calculus is a challenging subject, but it is also a very rewarding one. It provides students with a powerful set of tools that can be used to solve a wide variety of problems. If you are a STEM student, I encourage you to take a calculus course and learn more about this important branch of mathematics.
“Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
Forming a squad with characters from Stranger Things to face a new supernatural threat is an intriguing concept. Considering the unique abilities, personalities, and dynamics of the characters, here are my choices:
My first choice would easily be Eleven. Eleven possesses telekinetic and telepathic abilities, making her a formidable asset against any supernatural threat. Her courage, determination, and emotional depth make her an invaluable member of the team. Plus, her connection to the Upside Down and her previous experiences battling Demogorgon monsters and other creatures give her valuable insights and skills.
My next choice would be Eleven's father, Jim Hopper. Hopper's experience as Hawkins' chief of police, coupled with his strength, resourcefulness, and determination, makes him an excellent addition to the squad. His tactical thinking and ability to navigate dangerous situations would be crucial in facing any new threat. Moreover, his protective instincts towards Eleven would ensure that the team remains focused and united.
My final choice would be Dustin. Dustin's intelligence, resourcefulness, and loyalty make him a valuable member of the squad. While he may not possess supernatural abilities like Eleven, his knowledge of science and technology, as well as his ability to think outside the box, can provide crucial insights and solutions to overcome challenges. Additionally, his sense of humor and optimism can help keep morale high during difficult times.
Together, Eleven, Hopper, and Dustin would form a well-rounded team capable of facing any new supernatural threat that arises in Hawkins or beyond. Their unique skills, experiences, and personalities would complement each other, making them a force.

I have been honored to be a part of the National Society of High School Scholars and my school’s National Honor Society with a 3.8 weighted GPA. Also, I am on track to complete the North Carolina Scholar, Global Language, College/UNC, and Career Diploma Endorsements. I am a member of the Junior National Honor Society of Black Engineers, where we discuss volunteering opportunities and create solutions to problems during the meetings, similar to how engineers create things to solve problems given to them. I participated in my school’s North Carolina Technology Student Association in my sophomore year and the Junior National Society of Black Engineers in my junior year. I will continue participating in NSBE Jr. and join my school's Key Club. As a volunteer, including the clubs I participate in, I am a helper with Families Forward Charlotte with workshops. Also, I assist with holiday donations of collecting and drop-offs for families living in poverty.
During COVID, while being quarantined, I began building and assembling furniture and a trampoline. My determination, intelligence, and skills allowed me to complete the trampoline without help. Also, my dad, who was an engineer, and I built a doghouse during a weekend visit. Since I loved building things, Engineering made sense for a future career. Building that doghouse became a significant memory for me as it was one of the last times I saw my dad before he passed away later that year. I was 14 years old at the time. The next several months were the toughest of my life; I became distant and lost motivation. Thankfully, I had a circle of family and friends around me with encouragement and support. That solidified my reason for wanting to major in engineering.
My dad was an electrical engineer I could count on to help me with math when it was hard
to answer a question. I would show him the advanced work I had to do and we would collaborate to find the correct answer. Losing my dad is still a tough topic to talk about with others. However, I've been able to overcome this obstacle that came into my life. I was able to do well in high school and am currently in my last semester before graduating.
Innovators of Color in STEM Scholarship
Choosing to pursue a degree in civil engineering took a lot of work. As a young African American, I want to be a part of the diversity in STEM. Netflix and Scholarships!
This show, just like life, has two types of people: the haves and the have-nots. The haves are known as Kooks, rich people living lavishly with nice boats and big houses. The have-nots, or the Pogues, work for the Kooks and work harder to be close to their level. Filmed in Charleston, South Carolina, but based on the coast of North Carolina, Outer Banks is an action-packed story following teenage Pogues who go from a regular lifestyle to treasure hunting outside the country. I first watched this when it came to Netflix during the COVID lockdown in April 2020, and it's been one of my favorite series since. The story and plot twists are very entertaining, so I plan on preventing spoilers in this essay.
The main Pogues in the story are John Booker "John B" Routledge, Kiara "Kie" Carrera, JJ Maybank, and Pope Heyward. John B had been living with his father until he mysteriously went missing. Kie is technically a Kook since her parents live on the Figure Eight island, but she hangs with the Pogues and doesn't relate or get along with the Kooks. JJ is John B's spontaneous best friend, who will do whatever it takes for his friends. Pope is a wise, reasonable friend who warns them of the consequences of their actions, only to be ignored. Another character, Sarah Cameron, is the daughter of Ward Cameron, a wealthy businessman who knew John B's father, "Big John" Routledge.
The allure of "Outer Banks" lies in its picturesque setting and its ability to weave a narrative that seamlessly blends elements of adventure, mystery, and coming-of-age drama. From the first episode, viewers are plunged into a whirlwind of intrigue as the Pogues embark on a dangerous quest to unravel the secrets surrounding the disappearance of John B's father and the legendary treasure he left behind.
One of the most compelling aspects of "Outer Banks" is its rich tapestry of characters, each imbued with depth, complexity, and an unwavering loyalty to their friends and ideals. Whether it's the charismatic and resourceful John B, the fiercely independent Sarah Cameron, or the lovable misfit JJ, every member of the ensemble cast brings a unique perspective to the table, making them relatable and endearing to audiences of all ages.
Moreover, "Outer Banks" is more than just a thrilling adventure; it's a story about the power of friendship, resilience, and the pursuit of justice in the face of adversity. As the Pogues navigate treacherous waters literally and figuratively, they confront their fears, insecurities, and the harsh realities of the world around them. Through their trials and triumphs, the show presents the importance of staying true to oneself and standing up for what is right, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.
Furthermore, "Outer Banks" excels in keeping audiences on the edge of their seats with its intricate plot twists, heart-pounding action sequences, and unexpected revelations. When you think you've unraveled the Outer Banks mysteries, the show throws another curveball, leaving you anticipating the next episode and hungry for more.
In conclusion, "Outer Banks" is not just another television series; it's an immersive cinematic experience that transports viewers to a world of adventure, intrigue, and endless possibilities. Whether you're a fan of mystery, romance, or adrenaline-fueled escapades, there's something for everyone to enjoy in this captivating show. So watch this show; you'll be hooked instantly and won't regret it.

I belong to the Junior National Honor Society of Black Engineers, where we discuss volunteering opportunities and brainstorm solutions to challenges during meetings. This mirrors how engineers develop solutions to problems they encounter, which helps me acquire knowledge that will aid me in college.
During COVID and being quarantined, I began building and assembling furniture and a trampoline, which became my new hobby. My determination, intelligence, and skills allowed me to assemble the trampoline on my own. Also, my dad (Electrical Engineer) and I built a doghouse during a weekend visit. Since I loved building things, it made sense for me to consider engineering as a future career. Building that doghouse became an important memory for me as it was one of the last times I saw my dad before he passed away later that year. I was 14 at the time, and the next several months were the hardest months of my life. I was blessed to have my family and friends surrounding me with encouragement and support so that I could press on to carry out my dream of becoming an engineer.
I had always enjoyed putting things together, like Legos, and had recently been building new furniture for fun. One day, my mother surprised us by ordering a trampoline to entertain me and my brother while we were stuck at home. Building the entire trampoline on my own was a personal accomplishment that helped me grow and better understand myself. It reminded me of my childhood love for creating complex things with Legos. Despite the challenges of the lockdown, this experience taught me the value of finding joy and fulfillment in small accomplishments. Although others suggested I have assistance, I was determined to do it alone and viewed it as a personal challenge. I persevered, working tirelessly day and night until I finally assembled the trampoline. It was by no means an easy feat, but I was proud to have accomplished it all on my own.
After completing the trampoline, I experienced a sense of accomplishment that surpassed my usual achievements. It felt even more fulfilling than making the honor roll or any of my academic accomplishments. My goal was to demonstrate my ability to construct an entire trampoline alone, and I achieved it. Some may view it as stubbornness or obstinacy, but I consider it determination, recognizing my abilities, and having a competitive nature. The idea of accomplishing the impossible intrigues me, and as we approach 2024, I believe it will become increasingly attainable with time.
I have discovered that I excel in building things, which has led me to pursue a career in engineering. I am considering majoring in civil engineering when I attend North Carolina A&T University. My father was an engineer, and I aspire to follow in his footsteps. Engineering is a lucrative career option with long-term potential. While assembling a trampoline may seem trivial, it taught me the value of determination and how important assembling things will be in my future career.

One problem I would like to address in my community as a civil engineer is improving the quality of infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and utilities. In Charlotte, North Carolina, I see roads being worked on and new structures being built all the time, and I want to be a part of that process. There are a few bridges where the concrete needs to be repaired for safety reasons. As a civil engineer, I can contribute to the solution of these issues by utilizing my skills and knowledge in designing and implementing projects that are efficient and cost-effective. I can also use my expertise in sustainability and green engineering to create solutions that are environmentally friendly and responsible. Additionally, I can provide technical support and guidance to local government officials and citizens to ensure that projects are completed successfully. The idea of planning and designing a structure, and then seeing it come to life, is fascinating to me. I hope that this scholarship will help me further my education and allow me to contribute even more to my community.

Also, I assist with holiday donations of collecting and drop-offs for families living in poverty.
For my senior year, I plan to work harder than I did these past high school years. My main goal is to have all A's, and boost my GPA to a 4.0 weighted. I want to prove to myself more than anyone that I can do it. Being an engineer is something I've thought about doing since I was eleven to twelve years old. I understand that this means I have to use math throughout my career. Math has been my best subject since I first started school. I remember being ahead of the class in elementary school when it came to math. Earning this scholarship will help me follow in my father's footsteps, become an engineer, and make my family proud.
