Over the past four years I have pushed myself to be the best student-athlete-citizen I know how to be. I have been a four year member of the Varsity Boys soccer team, serving as Captain for my Junior and Senior years. That role, I quickly realized, was about so much more than showing up and kicking a ball. It helped me to learn leadership skills and challenged me outside my comfort zone when I needed to act as an advocate for my team or a team member. It has given me the discipline and accountability I needed to succeed in school and earn a 4.12 high school GPA and a place in the National Honor Society. In my Junior year I took a course called Personal Finance. I learned so much about income, debt, the stock market and how to effectively manage money. It fascinated me and knew it was something I wanted to pursue. I felt confident enough to take my curiosity to the next level in my Senior year. A rite of passage at my school is the Senior Internship in the second semester of our final year. It gives student the opportunity to get first hand experience in a field they are interested in and for me that was business. Just when we thought we were past the clutches of Covid, disappointment set in. We learned that the businesses who had participated in the program in the past could no longer help due to post Covid rebuilding of their infrastructure. To say we were disappointed is an understatement until one day in the Winter of 2023 one of the mentors came to me and explained that a local Foundation had reached out to the school for possible fundraising programs. The Foundation, Dream Day of Cape Cod, gives chronically ill kids and their families a one week vacation on the Cape as a break from schedules and doctor’s appointments and just lets them escape for a bit. The Foundation had been unable to fundraise since Covid and they were in jeopardy of not being financially able to fulfill their mission for the coming summer. After about a week I came up with the idea to start a NPO and organize a road race Mother’s Day weekend the proceeds of which would go directly to Dream Day. I had no idea what I was getting myself in to! After months of planning, meetings, licenses and coordinating staff I am pleased to say that the event was a huge success. The Monomoy business interns were able to raise over $7,000 for Dream Day Cape Cod which I hope will give at least a few children a chance to enjoy a care free vacation with their families this summer. I can honestly say that this has been the hardest and most rewarding thing I have ever had the privilege to be a part of. I hope that next years interns will take the reigns and keep the NPO going so that we can continue to serve our community effectively. Not only did this experience give me an opportunity to leave a legacy within the larger community, it also enabled me to leave a legacy for my younger sister, who as a member of the class of 2025, is eager to pick up the torch and carry it on.
