Bio

I have lived in my home state of Oregon all my life. I am finishing up my bachelor's degree at Portland State University. I intend to go to law school after I graduate Portland State. I am involved in my local recreation center, helping them set up community events. I am also very much involved in the local armature boxing scene here in Portland.  Of course, this is an expensive and difficult plan I intend to take. I hope that I can be considered for any potential scholarships to help me navigate this uncertain path.

My whole life, I have considered myself a Christian. But I did not really believe what that meant for a part of it. I was living as everyone around me did, responding "Yes" when people asked me if I was Christian. But I decided when I got to high school to dive deep and do my own research, not just what I was taught, but what I could find and learn. This led me to the undeniable truth. Being a Christian is not something I can simply say. Instead, it is something I must do every day, a message I should spread to those around me, how I should treat them, and how I should live. Sure, every day, I still come up short on the goals set before me, on the ideals that I base my life on. But that does not change my dedication and devotion to them. This world keeps falling farther from this truth, but I hope I can beat at least a small piece of just one person coming to the truth found in the Lord. It seems every field these days lacks the morals that it needs. Corruption seems to be rampant everywhere. I feel my talents are best in the legal field. This is a field where there is great potential to make a positive impact. There are people legally killing unborn children and legally mutilating them once born as well. Disgusting acts like this should not be legal, and in some cases, they already are not legal. But the legality of this does not matter as long as one side has an army willing to do whatever it takes to continue to allow these acts and the other only has a few willing to legally and morally challenge these beliefs as the others simply watch passively. I am dedicated to protecting the lives and innocence of children and babies. I want to use my skills and future education to help protect them. Sure, we have an army of dedicated people on our side, but we are not as loud as theirs. We need to be to continue to gain ground on these issues, and I believe I can help take these bold actions. How could this be possible in a majority Christian nation such as The United States? Well, many of these people probably just respond "Yes" when asked if they are Christians instead of truly living out these beliefs. Many probably just say this instead of actively seeking out what it means and trying to live for those beliefs. It feels like it only becomes more challenging to change people's minds in this world as time goes on. But I genuinely believe that if people do their own unbiased research, there is only one conclusion they can come to, and that is the truth.

The most helpful piece of financial advice I have ever received applies to more than just finances. This advice was given to me by my grandfather who served in Vietnam. He said it was even applicable to combat situations. He said the advice may have even saved his life, he used it after he was shot. The advice was to never go into anything without a plan to make it benefit you. Now this is a general piece of advice that can apply to nearly any aspect of life. But that does not make it any less applicable to finances. I use this advice in my finances daily. It is even the reason I am filling out this scholarship application today. When I took my first college class I had an endgame in mind. I know what I want to do, so I planned to start at a community college to save money. I want to eventually go to law school. I went into community college with a plan. I mapped out every course I needed to take until I finish my bachelor's degree. I made all these plans so I do not waste a single dollar on an unnecessary course. This piece of advice from my grandfather will live on and it will stop me from wasting money on useless things that will not help me to accomplish my goals.

Throughout history, there have been men determined to do great things for the benefit of society. Their path is not always easy, but it is one they are willing to follow. Much like them I, Cole Soliz, am dedicated to doing great things for the benefit of my community and family. I do not come from a particularly wealthy family. We would consider ourselves rather average. But the average is not what I wish for in my future. I am determined to use my passion for law to positively impact society. I know what I want to do, and I have a plan to accomplish my goals.
