My name is Colby Fausnaught, and I am a 17-year-old student at York County School of Technology. Throughout high school, I have tried to balance schoolwork, after-school activities, and my long-term career goals. I aim to pursue a career in cybersecurity, something I want to do in college and beyond. My experience has been shaped by my interest in technology and the personal challenges I have faced.
The greatest challenge I've faced has been dealing with my mental health and confidence during high school. I have struggled with depression, ADHD, and self-doubt since 2019. These issues often made it hard for me to appreciate myself or my work, even after achieving something good. At times, I felt overwhelmed, questioning whether I could succeed academically or socially. For years, I thought my struggles defined me instead of my strengths.
I experienced a turning point when I began to focus on something within my control: my growth. I realized that while I couldn’t change every situation in my life, I could change how I viewed them. I got involved in cybersecurity by joining CyberPatriot, where I learned during high school how to tackle tough issues and defend systems. Competing as part of a team was difficult at first because I was naturally shy and introverted. However, I gradually became more comfortable sharing my ideas. I also drew motivation from my desire to keep learning—whether it was by teaching myself programming, reading about new security programs, or staying ahead in my schoolwork.
I also learned perseverance outside of school through soccer. I often play alone for self-discipline and enjoyment. Practicing on my own requires motivation, patience, and determination, especially when no one is watching. Soccer helped me clear my mind, relieve stress, and taught me that progress comes from consistency. This mindset translated to school, where I learned that simply showing up mattered more than being perfect.
From these challenges, I understand that failures are not setbacks; they are chances to grow stronger. I tackled my mental health issues by creating good habits, breaking goals down into smaller steps, and celebrating small victories. For example, when schoolwork became overwhelming, I divided tasks into manageable pieces and tracked my progress step by step. Over time, I realized that persistence can overcome doubt.
This experience has profoundly shaped my career goals. I want to enter cybersecurity not only because it is a growing field but also because it reflects the same determination and problem-solving mindset that have helped me push through my challenges. In cybersecurity, threats and challenges are constant, but the goal is to stay ahead, proactively prevent issues, and find innovative solutions. I see my journey mirrored in this field: the need to keep learning, adapt, and persevere even when facing uncertainty.
Looking ahead, my ultimate goal is to graduate from college at the top of my class, work in cybersecurity, and help create solutions that protect people and communities from online dangers. I also want to mentor students who struggle with self-doubt, just as I did. If I can inspire even one person to persist despite failures, I will consider that a success.
Overall, the adversity I have faced has not been easy, but it has shaped me into a driven, resilient person committed to making a positive impact. Overcoming these challenges has given me confidence that I can tackle any obstacle the future may bring. I look forward to continuing on this path through higher education and into the professional world.
