Last summer, 110 degrees, and a job fell into my lap. A local company needed more help and was in desperate need of HVAC technicians. At first, I thought this would be like any other construction job, but now, my life revolves around technology. Using technology, checking programs, and troubleshooting help me get the job done. As a Commercial HVAC Technician, I do a lot of work in schools. One school in particular in the Austin area suddenly had several units go out in the middle of winter. Texas winters are always interesting, as they can go from hot to blizzard within a couple of days. This elementary school suffered the consequences of a brutal freeze with no heat. When I got on the job, I knew I had to solve this problem quickly so that the students and teachers had a safe environment for learning. Through extensive troubleshooting, looking at the programming on the units, and working long hours, we were able to find the problem and quickly fix all of the units. The school was back up and running. HVAC is not your typical "technology" field. I do not spend my days coding websites or apps, nor do I design the latest version of anything, but I do spend my time using technology to create a safer environment for people to live and work in. In the field, some buildings have units that are 15 years old, and some have the latest model. I have to be prepared to work on anything. I use different types of meters, measuring devices, pumps, and other tools to do my job. I also have to plug into the unit to see if the problem is within the program. Sometimes, I even have to work on the circuit boards on the units to determine if the problem is there. My job as a Commercial HVAC Technician includes working on technology, by using technology, constantly. Working so frequently with technology inspires me to always be expanding my knowledge; that is why I am pursuing my Associate's Degree as a non-traditional student. Getting my Associate's as well as other certifications helps me stay on top of the latest technology and better prepares me for every day in the workplace. Every single day, I learn something new, and the world will never stop growing and changing. I need to continue pursuing my education in the technology and HVAC fields to stay up to date and help as many people stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter as possible.
