I want to share a deeply impactful and life-changing experience that occurred when I was 14 years old. It was a time that tested my strength, resilience, and ultimately led me to appreciate the kindness and bravery of strangers. I was kidnapped and held hostage for a week, locked in a room with no means of escape. The fear and confusion were overwhelming, but I refused to give up hope. Locked in a confined room, it felt like my world had been shattered. However, in the midst of darkness, a glimmer of hope emerged. I managed to convince some children playing outside, going off memory of their voices, aged between 6 and 9, to help me escape,to unlock the door for me. Unaware I was even there. As soon as they saw me, they ran to their mother’s room and returned with clothes and shoes, as I had been left naked. Their compassion and quick thinking allowed me a chance at freedom. With urgency in their voices, they urged me to run, to reclaim my freedom. In that moment, I felt a surge of courage and strength, as though I had escaped the clutches of my captor. Who I found out later was their big brother. I ran as fast as I could, banging on doors, screaming for help along the streets. But fate had a different plan. The person who had kidnapped me overheard my cries at a neighbor's house and came out onto the street, filled with rage and threatening my life. Despite my desperate attempt to outrun him, he caught up to me and subjected me to a brutal and vicious assault. I fought hard , even after lights out, stars in the sky, and birds flying around my head I fought until I couldn’t fight anymore and he began dragging my body back towards his home. As I lay unconscious being dragged on the street, lost from hope,my hope flickering, a miracle occurred. A car pulled over, and two courageous individuals jumped out, ready to fight for my life. They intervened, risking their own safety to protect me from further harm. In that moment, their presence and unwavering support helped me turn the tide. They put me in the car, and when I regained consciousness, I found myself in a hospital surrounded by police officers and detectives. It turned out that the man who had kidnapped me had deceived me, making me believe we were the same age. In reality, he was 18 years old and had been on the run from the authorities for two years, facing multiple charges, including accessory to murder. The woman who had pulled over and come to my aid came into my room and introduced herself as Sunshine, and the two boys with her were her nephews, the same age as me. Out of the countless cars that passed by, only one stopped to help, and it was their intervention that ensured my survival. They went above and beyond, helping me fight for my life and making sure that my "10" became "11." This experience has left an indelible mark on me. While I am still healing, both physically and emotionally, I have grown stronger and more resilient. The kindness and bravery of strangers have shown me the power of compassion and the impact that a single act of selflessness can have on someone's life. It has taught me the importance of being there for others during their darkest moments, of extending a helping hand when it is needed most.

I am a big movie fanatic so I’m all honesty this is going to be a hard choice. However if I had to choose just one movie to watch for the rest of my life, it would undoubtedly be "Split." This film has captivated me on multiple levels, and its psychological depth and thought-provoking themes make it a timeless masterpiece. What sets "Split" apart for me is its exploration of mental health issues. The movie delves into the complexities of dissociative identity disorder (DID) in a way that is both gripping and respectful. It sheds light on the severity of untreated mental health conditions and the profound impact they can have on individuals and those around them. The portrayal of the character with multiple personalities, played brilliantly by James McAvoy, is both haunting and mesmerizing. Each personality is distinct, with its own motivations and quirks, which adds an extra layer of intrigue to the narrative. Moreover, "Split" challenges the viewer's imagination and intellect by blurring the lines between reality and the power of the mind. It raises thought-provoking questions about the nature of identity and the extent to which our beliefs can shape our perception of ourselves and the world. The film masterfully creates an atmosphere of suspense, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats as they question what is real and what is merely a construct of the protagonist's mind. This constant tension and ambiguity make "Split" a movie that can be revisited endlessly, as each viewing offers new insights and interpretations. Beyond its psychological depth, "Split" is a technically impressive film. The cinematography, coupled with the atmospheric score, creates an immersive experience that draws the viewer deeper into the story. M. Night Shyamalan's direction is masterful, with carefully crafted scenes that heighten the tension and amplify the emotional impact. The writing is superb, with a tightly woven plot that keeps the audience engaged from start to finish. On a personal level, "Split" has resonated with me deeply. It has sparked discussions and reflections on the complexities of the human mind and the importance of mental health awareness. The movie serves as a reminder of the struggles individuals with mental health conditions face and the significance of seeking help and support. It has fostered empathy and understanding within me, prompting me to approach these subjects with compassion and open-mindedness. In conclusion, if I were to choose one movie to watch for the rest of my life, "Split" would be my ultimate choice. Its exploration of mental health issues, its ability to challenge the viewer's imagination and intellect, and its technical brilliance make it a cinematic gem. This film's enduring impact on me, both emotionally and intellectually, ensures that it would continue to engage and provoke thought with each subsequent viewing. "Split" is an extraordinary work of art that I would gladly immerse myself in time and time again.

As a homeless youth, attending school and working two jobs, my journey has been marked by resilience and determination. Balancing my studies with my roles as a street outreach volunteer with OpenArms, an assistant manager at Dollar General during the nights, and a weekend employee at Albertsons has posed its fair share of challenges. However, this unique circumstance has shaped me in profound ways and instilled in me a strong sense of purpose. Being homeless while pursuing my education has emphasized the importance of time management in my life. Every minute is valuable, and I have learned to make the most of the limited time I have. With an asynchronous schedule for my online semester, I have been able to structure my study hours and work shifts strategically. This flexibility has been a saving grace, allowing me to attend to my academic responsibilities while fulfilling my work obligations. It has also provided me with the necessary skills to efficiently communicate, both in my work environment and with my professors and peers. In addition to time management, my current jobs have offered me a glimpse into the world of business development and management, which aligns with my post-graduate aspirations. As an assistant manager at Dollar General, I have gained firsthand experience in overseeing operations, managing inventory, and leading a team. These responsibilities have equipped me with essential skills in decision-making, problem-solving, and effective communication. The fast-paced nature of the retail environment has also honed my ability to adapt and think on my feet—qualities that will undoubtedly benefit me in future managerial roles. My role as a street outreach volunteer with OpenArms has been equally transformative. It has not only exposed me to the harsh realities faced by marginalized communities but has also deepened my understanding of empathy and compassion. Through this experience, I have developed strong deescalation skills and the ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. These skills will be invaluable in any future leadership or managerial position, where conflict resolution and fostering inclusivity are vital. Beyond the professional realm, working while homeless has granted me financial independence and a sense of responsibility. It has instilled in me a strong work ethic and a drive to succeed against all odds. These qualities reflect my determination to create a better future for myself, including securing stable housing post-graduation. In conclusion, my journey as a homeless individual attending school and working two jobs has taught me invaluable lessons in time management, resilience, and empathy. Through careful planning and prioritization, I have successfully balanced my academic commitments with my work and volunteer responsibilities. My current jobs have provided me with practical skills in business development, management, and communication, while my experiences as a street outreach volunteer have enhanced my ability to navigate challenging situations with empathy and understanding. Despite the hardships I have faced, I remain steadfast in my pursuit of stability and success. I am confident that the skills I have acquired and the lessons I have learned will pave the way for a bright post-graduate future, where I can make a positive impact in both my personal and professional life.
Carole Willis Criminal Justice Reform Scholarship
I am CoraMay Boissiere, a 24-year-old student at Riverside City College. With a major in STEM & Criminal Justice and minors in forensic psychology and criminology, I am dedicated to addressing homelessness and domestic violence abuse among young adults aged 21-27. Many individuals born between '97 and '02 face the challenge of aging out of programs that are already difficult to access. Limited resources primarily cater to women and children, leaving young adults without kids with few options for assistance. It is vital to provide support and resources to this overlooked demographic, offering them a genuine pathway to a better future. To combat youth homelessness, I actively support initiatives like Open Arms, Safehouse, and Shannon West. These prevention programs target the root causes of homelessness, such as family conflict, poverty, and mental health issues. However, the lack of funding restricts the number of individuals who can access these vital services. I believe in empowering young individuals through free counseling, education, and job training, equipping them with the skills and resources to avoid homelessness. This is just the initial step in a comprehensive approach. As a survivor of domestic violence, I am deeply involved in raising awareness about abuse among young adults. I have experienced the divide created by law enforcement, which often leaves men and women feeling isolated and alone. By promoting education, prevention, and support, we can break the cycle of violence and provide survivors with the tools they need to heal and thrive. Within the criminal justice system, my focus is on fairness, rehabilitation, and reducing recidivism. Restorative justice holds immense power. Through my advocacy for alternatives to incarceration, I collaborate closely with organizations that provide job training, education, and mental health support to individuals at risk of entering or re-entering the criminal justice system. By addressing the underlying issues contributing to criminal behavior, we can break the cycle and significantly reduce recidivism rates. I actively support efforts to reform sentencing laws, particularly for non-violent offenses, collaborating with the Riverside City Council. This includes advocating for diversion programs, drug rehabilitation, and mental health treatment as alternatives to imprisonment. By embracing a compassionate and rehabilitative approach, we can create a criminal justice system that fosters personal growth and reduces the social and economic costs associated with incarceration. As someone currently battling homelessness, I have firsthand experience of the lack of resources and meaningful change available for youth in our country. Many individuals my age find themselves caught between settling for less and building for the future. It is evident that we need to focus on the specific challenges faced by young adults. Through prevention, intervention, restorative justice, and advocacy for alternatives to incarceration, I am determined to make a meaningful impact on these critical issues. In conclusion, my journey as a student in STEM & Criminal Justice, coupled with my personal experiences, fuels my passion to address homelessness and domestic violence abuse among young adults. By combining compassion, resources, and systemic change, we can provide the necessary support, raise awareness, and foster a criminal justice system that promotes fairness and rehabilitation. Together, we can create a brighter future for forgotten youth. Thank you for your time.
Justice Adolpho A. Birch Jr. Scholarship
Question 1: As of now, I plan to begin law school in the fall of 2025. Due to my setback in homelessness, I couldn't apply to Chapman School of Law for the fall of 2024 as originally intended. However, I have chosen Chapman School of Law as my desired institution because it is local and affordable. Additionally, during a shadow session at the Riverside Supreme Court, I had the opportunity to meet five successful African American lawyers who graduated from Chapman School of Law. They even provided me with information about scholarships that could support my educational journey. While I am also interested in attending Georgia School of Law, I have not yet applied to any law schools or received any decision notifications. Question 2: Outside of formal education, I actively pursue learning and intellectual growth through various means. One of the ways I engage in this pursuit is by reading extensively on legal topics, such as landmark court cases, legal theories, and current legal issues. I make use of online resources, legal publications, and books authored by legal scholars to deepen my understanding of the law. This self-directed learning has allowed me to stay informed about legal developments and has shaped my legal aspirations by broadening my knowledge base and helping me develop a more nuanced perspective on legal matters. Additionally, I participate in legal forums and online communities where I can engage in discussions with legal professionals and enthusiasts. These platforms provide me with opportunities to ask questions, share ideas, and learn from others' experiences. By actively participating in these discussions, I am able to gain insights from diverse perspectives, challenge my own assumptions, and refine my legal reasoning skills. Question 3: One particular moment stands out when I stood up for what was right despite potential negative consequences. I was working as an intern at a small law firm, and I discovered that one of the senior partners was engaging in unethical practices, including manipulating evidence to favor their clients. It was a challenging situation because this partner had significant influence in the firm and could potentially harm my professional reputation if I spoke out against them. However, my commitment to justice and upholding the integrity of the legal profession compelled me to take action. I gathered evidence of the partner's misconduct and presented it to the managing partner, who was initially skeptical. Despite the initial opposition, I remained persistent and provided additional evidence to support my claims. Eventually, an internal investigation was conducted, and the partner's unethical behavior was exposed. While I faced significant pushback and experienced some negative consequences, such as strained relationships within the firm, I learned the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity. This experience reinforced my belief in the ethical responsibilities of legal professionals and solidified my commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity in my future legal career. Question 4: If I had the resources to create a philanthropic initiative, I would support a cause focused on providing legal assistance and access to justice for marginalized and underserved communities. This cause is particularly important because access to legal representation and the justice system is often limited for individuals who cannot afford high legal fees. By supporting this cause, I would aim to establish legal clinics or organizations that offer pro bono legal services to individuals in need. These services would encompass various areas of law, including civil rights, family law, immigration, and criminal defense. The initiative would also focus on providing educational resources and workshops to empower individuals with legal knowledge and help them navigate the complexities of the legal system. I believe that equal access to justice is a fundamental right, and by supporting this cause, I would strive to address the systemic barriers that prevent marginalized communities from obtaining proper legal representation. Joining the Fight Against Fentanyl: A Call to Action My dear friend's struggles with the devastating impact of fentanyl have inspired me to join the urgent battle against this deadly epidemic. The escalating number of deaths caused by fentanyl overdoses demands immediate action and a comprehensive approach to address this social issue. In this essay, I will outline the multifaceted strategies that I believe can make a significant difference in combating the war against fentanyl. We begin with Raising Awareness and Spreading Education: First and foremost, combating the fentanyl crisis requires a comprehensive public awareness campaign to educate individuals about the dangers and risks associated with this synthetic opioid. We must work together to dispel misconceptions, reduce stigmas, and promote evidence-based information regarding fentanyl use, addiction, and available resources for prevention and treatment. Second Strengthening Law Enforcement Efforts:While a supply-side approach alone may not be sufficient, it is crucial to enhance law enforcement efforts to disrupt the production, distribution, and smuggling of fentanyl. Collaborative international efforts to dismantle illicit drug networks and improve border security are essential to curbing the influx of fentanyl from both domestic and foreign sources. Stricter penalties for drug traffickers, including those who profit from fentanyl distribution, can act as a deterrent and disrupt the drug trade. Thirdly,Expanding Access to Treatment and Harm Reduction:Addressing the fentanyl crisis requires a compassionate and comprehensive approach that prioritizes access to evidence-based treatment and harm reduction strategies. We must invest in expanding the availability of medication-assisted treatment (MAT), counseling services, and support programs for individuals struggling with fentanyl addiction. Additionally, harm reduction initiatives such as naloxone distribution programs and safe injection sites can save lives and provide opportunities for individuals to seek recovery. Fourth,Collaborating with Healthcare Professionals:Engaging healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, is vital in the fight against fentanyl. Education and training programs should be implemented to ensure healthcare providers have the knowledge and tools to identify at-risk individuals, provide appropriate pain management alternatives, and effectively address addiction. Encouraging responsible opioid prescribing practices and promoting alternative pain management methods can help reduce the demand for fentanyl. Fifth,Fostering International Cooperation: The production and distribution of fentanyl are global issues that require international cooperation. By fostering partnerships with countries impacted by the fentanyl crisis, we can share best practices, intelligence, and resources to combat the illicit trade. Diplomatic efforts should emphasize the importance of collaboration, information sharing, and joint operations to disrupt the supply chain and identify emerging synthetic opioids. In conclusion the war against fentanyl demands a collective effort encompassing public awareness, law enforcement, treatment accessibility, healthcare engagement, and international collaboration. By addressing the issue from multiple angles, we can make significant strides in reducing the devastating impact of fentanyl on our communities. Let us unite our voices, advocate for change, and work tirelessly to save lives, restore hope, and build a future free from the grips of this deadly epidemic. Together, we can make a true difference in the fight against fentanyl.

Joanne Pransky Celebration of Women in Robotics
As an avid reader and enthusiast of science fiction, I am captivated by the visionary works of Isaac Asimov. His stories have not only entertained me but also inspired me to contemplate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the field of robotics. In this essay, I will explore the near future of robotics, delving into both the potential benefits and the intricate challenges that accompany this technological advancement. In the near future, robotics promises to revolutionize various aspects of our lives, ranging from healthcare to transportation and beyond. One of the most promising opportunities lies in the field of medical robotics. Imagine a world where surgical procedures are conducted with unmatched precision, thanks to robotic assistants capable of delicate movements beyond human capabilities. These robotic surgeons would drastically reduce the risks associated with human error and enhance patient outcomes. Moreover, robots could be utilized for tasks that are too dangerous or physically demanding for humans, minimizing the potential harm to medical professionals. Additionally, robotics holds the potential to reshape transportation systems. Autonomous vehicles, guided by advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, could navigate roads with heightened efficiency and safety. We may experiment with different styles, beliefs, and pursuits to find our authentic selves. However, this journey can be met with resistance, criticism, or dismissal from those who are more invested in maintaining the status quo. The lyric reflects the frustration and defiance that can arise when our attempts at self-expression are met with skepticism or disdain. In addition to external challenges, adolescence is a time of internal battles. We struggle with our own emotions, insecurities, and uncertainties. Faith can instill a sense of resilience and determination, enabling individuals to face adversity with unwavering resolve. Triumphs achieved with faith by one's side can be even more meaningful. Faith can serve as a driving force, propelling individuals to push beyond their limits and accomplish extraordinary things. It can provide a sense of gratitude and humility, acknowledging that success is not solely the result of one's efforts but also a gift from a higher power. Looking towards the future, faith can continue to be a guiding force in reaching greater heights. It can help individuals set meaningful goals, make ethical choices, and stay focused on their purpose. Faith can provide a moral compass, guiding individuals to make decisions that align with their values and beliefs. Moreover, faith can foster a sense of connection and community. It can bring people together, creating a support network of like-minded individuals who share similar beliefs and values. This sense of community can provide encouragement, accountability, and opportunities for collaboration, further enhancing one's potential for success. In summary, faith can be a meaningful and transformative force in individuals' lives. It can provide strength in times of adversity, drive individuals to achieve remarkable triumphs, and serve as a guiding force towards future success. I understand the profound impact it can have on individuals' journeys.

Hello my name is CoraMay Dutchess Boissiere. I am a 24 year old college student, currently at Riverside City . I am a double major in Neuropsychology as well as Criminal Justice. My education career goals are driven by a strong desire to acquire knowledge, develop my skills, and make a meaningful contribution to society. I believe that education is the key to personal growth, professional success, and social progress. As such, I am committed to pursuing higher education and continuously expanding my intellectual horizons. When a close friend or loved one comes to me for guidance on a major life decision, I approach the situation with empathy, active listening, and a desire to support them in the best way possible. I understand that making significant life choices can be overwhelming, and my role is to provide a safe space for them to explore their thoughts and feelings. First and foremost, I would listen attentively to their concerns and encourage them to express their thoughts and emotions openly. I would create an environment where they feel comfortable sharing their fears, aspirations, and uncertainties. By actively listening, I can gain a deeper understanding of their situation and the factors influencing their decision. Next, I would ask probing questions to help them clarify their goals, values, and priorities. This could involve discussing their passions, interests, and long-term aspirations. By encouraging self-reflection, I aim to help them gain clarity and insight into what truly matters to them. Once we have a clearer understanding of their situation, I would provide objective information and perspectives related to their decision. This could include sharing relevant resources, personal experiences, or insights gained from others who have faced similar choices. I would present both the pros and cons, encouraging them to consider different angles and potential outcomes. It is important to remember that the ultimate decision rests with the individual seeking guidance. I would respect their autonomy and encourage them to trust their intuition and judgment. I would remind them that life decisions are rarely black and white, and that it's okay to take calculated risks and learn from the process. Throughout the conversation, I would offer emotional support and reassurance. I would remind them that setbacks and challenges are a normal part of life, and that growth often comes from stepping outside of our comfort zones. I would emphasize that they have the resilience and inner strength to navigate whatever path they choose. Drawing from a real-life experience, I recall a friend who was contemplating a career change from a non-STEM field to a STEM-related field. They were passionate about science and technology but felt hesitant due to the perceived difficulty of transitioning and the fear of starting from scratch. In response, I provided encouragement, highlighting their natural aptitude for problem-solving and their passion for the subject. To help them navigate this challenge, I recommended a step-by-step approach. We identified specific resources, such as online courses, workshops, and mentorship programs, to help them gain foundational knowledge and skills in the new field. We also explored networking opportunities and connected with professionals who had successfully transitioned into STEM careers. Additionally, I encouraged them to embrace a growth mindset and view challenges as opportunities for learning and personal development. We discussed the importance of perseverance, patience, and maintaining a positive attitude throughout the journey. Setting realistic goals and celebrating small milestones along the way helped them stay motivated and focused. In conclusion, when a loved one seeks guidance on a major life decision, I strive to be a supportive listener, providing a safe space for them to explore their thoughts and emotions. By offering empathy, objective information, and emotional support, I aim to empower them to make informed choices that align with their values and aspirations. Sharing real-life experiences and practical strategies can help individuals navigate challenges and pursue their desired path in life.
