Education is the pillar of a healthy democracy and thriving society. Students who are deprived of a proper education are often left greatly disadvantaged and underprepared for the challenges of life. Teachers play a huge role in helping guide students through critical developmental periods.
When I was a student I was keenly aware of the impact that educators had on my experience. I had many classmates appreciate my efforts to help them through their classwork. Some of them would even tell me I would make a good teacher but I always shrugged off those comments until later on in my education, when I reconsidered what I wanted to do with my career. I realized that while I was passionate about science, I didnt want to pursue a career in research. It's in that moment when the compliment resonated with me and i seriously considered a career in education.
Hesitant to go back to school for a program I wasn't sure about I started work at a private school called Fusion academy. I taught science and math to students ranging from middle school to high school. Over my two years working at Fusion I loved every day of my job. It was inspiring and motivating to educate and mentor the students. I always felt motivated to come in for them. More so than any of my amazing or horrible teachers in the past, it is the students I had in those two years that convinced me that teaching was the right career for me.
I applied to the San Jose State University program, and am currently pursuing a Masters of Science in Science Education. I want to be able to help students in the public school system where I can help contribute to my community by educating and uplifting the younger generations. I am eager to apply all of the pedagogy and techniques I am learning about in graduate school to my classrooms in order to be able to provide the best for my students.
I know that just as my previous students have inspired me and pushed me to be the best I can, the students I will continue to teach in the future will make me strive to improve each day. I hope to be able to inspire many young minds to appreciate Science. More importantly though, I hope to equip my students with the tools and skills to work together in order to navigate through all the challenges they face in life, even after they leave my classroom.
