My name is Clarke Canova, and I am proud to be a product of rich Italian heritage. My mother, who is half Italian and half Irish, and father who is 100% Italian, has always been a beacon of cultural pride, instilling in me a deep appreciation for my roots. However, it is my Italian heritage, making up 89% of my lineage, that profoundly shapes my identity and aspirations.
The story of my family’s journey to America is one of resilience and determination. My great-grandfather on my father’s side immigrated to the United States to escape the "black hand," a term used to describe the mafia’s presence in certain parts of Italy. Leaving behind a life fraught with danger, he arrived in a new land with hopes of building a safer and better future. However, the path was not easy. He became an indentured servant, laboring in the harsh conditions of sugar cane fields in Louisiana. My father vividly recalls him bringing home some sugar cane from the fields for my dad and his siblings to suck on. However, my great-grandfather's experiences were marked by sweat and toil. It is his perseverance and sacrifice that lay the foundation for the opportunities I enjoy today.
Adding another layer to my heritage is my connection through my mother's side of the family to Diego Della Ratta, a Spanish-Italian feudal lord and warrior of royalty. This ancestral link is one of the most unique aspects of my life. Being related to royalty is something that brings me great pride. This ancestor serves as a reminder of the rich history that courses through my family's history. Diego Della Ratta's legacy as a warrior and leader inspires me to pursue my goals with courage and determination.
In my chosen field of study, I am committed to making a positive impact by integrating the values and lessons I've learned from my heritage. My field, Biology, offers numerous avenues for contributing meaningfully to society. Inspired by my great-grandfather’s resilience and my ancestral legacy, I aim to approach my studies and future career with a blend of hard work, integrity, and a passion for innovation. One of my primary goals is to travel the world and study animals from all over. I believe that by focusing on telling the stories and informing people of these animals, I can honor my family’s legacy of making meaningful contributions to the world around them. Moreover, I am committed to fostering inclusivity and cultural awareness within my field. My diverse heritage has taught me the importance of understanding and appreciating different perspectives. By promoting cross-cultural collaboration and empathy, I hope to create an environment where diverse ideas can flourish, leading to innovative solutions and a more inclusive community.
In conclusion, my Italian heritage, enriched by the tales of my great-grandfather’s resilience and my ancestral connection to Diego Della Ratta, serves as a cornerstone of my identity. It fuels my determination to excel in Biology and make a positive impact on the world. With a deep sense of gratitude for my heritage and a commitment to hard work and innovation, I am poised to contribute meaningfully to my field and honor the legacy of those who came before me. I couldn't be prouder to be an Italian American.
