    Billy Downey Memorial Agriculture Scholarship
Agriculture is the cornerstone of our community, extending far beyond the fields and farms. It’s a vital economic driver, a source of nourishment, and a way to preserve cultural values that foster strong connections between people. In rural areas like my own, agriculture is about more than crops and livestock—it’s about family, tradition, and a way of life that has shaped our identity for generations. The agricultural industry supports the local economy in multiple ways. It provides employment opportunities, not only for farmers but for everyone involved in the supply chain, from machinery mechanics to veterinarians. By keeping local businesses and services active, agriculture ensures that rural communities remain vibrant and sustainable. Beyond economics, agriculture brings communities together through events like county fairs, livestock shows, and farmers’ markets, where knowledge is shared, and traditions are celebrated. These events foster a sense of unity and pride, creating bonds that transcend generations. As President of the Lufkin FFA, I’ve had the chance to see the impact of agriculture firsthand. Leading FFA initiatives has allowed me to engage deeply with the agricultural community, emphasizing the importance of agricultural education and leadership. These experiences have reinforced my commitment to the field and motivated me to pursue a career that supports and strengthens agriculture. Agriculture also plays a crucial role in promoting environmental stewardship. Farmers and ranchers work the land with a deep understanding of sustainability, knowing that their livelihood depends on it. Many are shifting towards more environmentally friendly practices, emphasizing conservation, soil health, and animal welfare. This commitment to sustainable agriculture benefits the broader community by safeguarding natural resources for future generations. I see my future role in agriculture as a bridge between traditional practices and innovative solutions. As someone who aspires to be a large animal veterinarian, specializing in equine care, I want to be part of the next generation that drives agriculture forward. My goal is to contribute to the well-being of the animals that are essential to farming and ranching. Healthy animals mean more productive farms, which in turn support the broader community by ensuring a steady supply of food and resources. One way I hope to make an impact is by promoting and utilizing advanced veterinary treatments. Techniques like Magma Wave therapy have the potential to improve animal welfare significantly, leading to healthier livestock and more sustainable farming practices. By integrating innovative care with traditional knowledge, I aim to enhance the quality of life for animals while supporting the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural operations. Beyond veterinary care, I want to be an advocate for agriculture, especially for young women who might hesitate to pursue careers in this male-dominated field. I believe that diverse perspectives will lead to better problem-solving and progress within the industry. My goal is to inspire others to see the potential in agriculture, whether it’s through veterinary science, crop innovation, or sustainable practices. Agriculture is about more than feeding people; it’s about building a resilient, connected community. By staying at the forefront of veterinary medicine and advocating for sustainable and inclusive agricultural practices, I hope to play a role in strengthening our community and ensuring that the values of hard work, stewardship, and unity continue to thrive for future generations.
    Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success, to me, transcends winning; it encompasses the lessons learned along the way. While we all enjoy standing at the top, I believe true success lies in the ability to fall with grace and rise even stronger. This mindset has guided my academic and personal journey, where the drive to excel goes hand in hand with the desire to learn and grow. I am immensely grateful for the opportunities I’ve had throughout my life. I don’t see myself as entitled to recognition, but I’ve poured my energy into making the most of each chance given to me. My 4.0 GPA, enrollment in multiple dual credit courses, and active participation in extracurriculars speak to my dedication to both academic excellence and community engagement. I’m proud of the hard work I’ve put in, yet even more humbled by the support I’ve received that has made these achievements possible. My dream is to become a veterinarian, specializing in large animals and equine care. This path is not only my passion but also a challenge, as the field remains predominantly male. I see this as an opportunity to not only prove myself but to redefine success in my own terms—pushing through barriers and excelling in a career that I care deeply about. My ambition is not just to treat animals, but to make a tangible difference in their lives and the lives of those who rely on them. This goal drives my interest in cutting-edge treatments like Magma Wave, which can dramatically enhance animal care. Receiving the Redefining Victory Scholarship would be a pivotal step in this journey. Financial support would allow me to focus even more on my studies, hands-on training, and the opportunities that lie ahead. This scholarship represents more than just financial aid; it symbolizes a vote of confidence in my ability to become a leader in the veterinary field, despite any challenges that might arise. What excites me most about veterinary medicine is the constant evolution of the field. I want to be at the forefront of innovative treatments and technologies that can improve animal health, and I’m driven by the prospect of making a real difference. This scholarship would allow me to continue my education and gain access to the resources I need to stay ahead of the curve. By equipping myself with the latest knowledge and techniques, I can ensure the best possible outcomes for the animals in my care. Moreover, success isn’t just about reaching my own goals; it’s about giving back to the community that has supported and inspired me. I am committed to being a role model for other young women who might hesitate to pursue careers in male-dominated fields. I want to show that with hard work, perseverance, and the courage to face challenges head-on, it’s possible to not only break barriers but to set new standards. I am determined to push the boundaries of what’s possible in veterinary care. This scholarship would be a crucial part of that journey, enabling me to continue my education and transform my passion into a meaningful career. I am ready to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way. With the right tools, dedication, and support, I am confident that I can make a significant impact in the equine field. This scholarship would be not just a resource, but a validation of my hard work, potential, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
    1989 (Taylor's Version) Fan Scholarship
If my year so far had a soundtrack, several songs from 1989 (Taylor’s Version) would be perfect companions to capture the journey I’ve been on, particularly as I navigate my senior year and the many transitions in my life. Each song reflects different emotional tones that have marked this year — from moments of growth and self-discovery to finding joy amidst change. “You Are In Love (Taylor’s Version)” would serve as a reminder of the love and support that have surrounded me during this pivotal time. While the song speaks of romantic love, for me, it symbolizes the deep connections I have with my family, especially after the changes we’ve been through. From my dad and stepmom adopting my little sister to my mom’s remarriage, I’ve found that love isn’t just about the people we choose, but also about embracing the new dynamics and bonds that come with change. The lyric, “And you understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars” speaks to the sacrifices and challenges we’ve faced as a blended family, but also to the unbreakable ties we’ve forged through it all. “Clean (Taylor’s Version)” represents the growth I’ve experienced as I’ve stepped into leadership roles and prepared for my future. As president of Lufkin FFA and someone deeply involved in my community, I’ve learned to balance the demands of my personal life and my commitments. The lyric, “The drought was the very worst / When the flowers that we’d grown together died of thirst” resonates with the moments of burnout I’ve experienced this year. But just like in the song, I’ve found clarity and renewal through these challenges, learning to pace myself and focus on what truly matters. The process of growing into these responsibilities, like clearing away the noise to find what is truly essential, mirrors the cleansing process the song describes. “Wildest Dreams (Taylor’s Version)” feels like the perfect backdrop to the bittersweet excitement of senior year. As I prepare for graduation and look toward a future in veterinary medicine, there’s a sense of awe and anticipation that reminds me of this song’s dreamlike quality. I often find myself thinking about how these moments—my last rodeos, final FFA events, and even everyday high school experiences—are fleeting but deeply meaningful. The lyric, “Say you’ll remember me / Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset” speaks to my hope that I’ll carry these memories with me, even as I move on to new adventures. It’s a song about holding onto the best parts of the past, knowing that even when they fade, they shape who you become. Finally, “Shake It Off (Taylor’s Version)” represents the energy and joy that comes with embracing who I am, flaws and all. With so much happening this year, I’ve had to learn not to sweat the small stuff. The song’s carefree spirit reminds me that sometimes, you just have to laugh off the stress and keep moving forward. As someone who has always juggled multiple commitments, this year especially has been a lesson in letting go of perfection and embracing the chaos. Altogether, these songs from 1989 (Taylor’s Version) reflect the highs and lows of my year, capturing everything from personal growth and leadership to the joy and bittersweet nature of moving forward. They remind me that every challenge and change is part of a larger story, and I’m excited for what’s next.
    Wicked Fan Scholarship
“Wicked” has captured my imagination ever since I first experienced its magical storytelling. As someone deeply fascinated by complex characters and narratives, the musical offered me a unique perspective on the world of Oz that extended beyond the familiar. Instead of portraying good versus evil in the traditional sense, “Wicked” delves into the nuances of human nature, exploring how choices, circumstances, and perceptions shape individuals. One of the reasons I am a fan of “Wicked” is its theme of embracing individuality. Elphaba’s journey sticks with me because she remains true to herself despite societal pressures to conform. Growing up in a small town where expectations can sometimes be rigid, I’ve often felt the tension between fitting in and standing out. Elphaba’s strength to follow her convictions, even when misunderstood or vilified, has inspired me to embrace my unique passions and qualities, no matter how unconventional they may seem to others. The friendship between Elphaba and Glinda also struck a chord with me. Though they start off as rivals, their bond transforms into something much deeper, transcending their differences. I see this as a powerful reminder that our initial judgments of people rarely capture their full depth. In my own life, I’ve encountered people from all walks of life, and “Wicked” has helped me reflect on the value of empathy and understanding in building meaningful relationships. The musical’s overarching message about how history is written by the victors is another reason for my admiration. Elphaba, labeled “wicked” by society, challenges us to reconsider the stories we are told and to question how narratives are shaped. This resonates with my own sense of curiosity and desire to seek out the truth in complex situations, particularly as I pursue a career as a veterinarian, where empathy and understanding are essential for advocating for animals that cannot speak for themselves. “Wicked” is more than a musical for me; it’s a story that reminds me to embrace who I am, to cherish friendships that are built on authenticity, and to question the world around me. Its themes of identity, acceptance, and challenging the status quo have left a lasting impact on me, making it one of my all-time favorite shows.
    GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
One lyric from Olivia Rodrigo’s album GUTS that resonates deeply with my own teenage experience is from the song “Vampire”: “I’m not sure what you’re saying, but I can tell you’re not okay.” This line encapsulates the complexities of adolescence, reflecting the emotional turbulence that often accompanies this stage of life. Teenage years are marked by a myriad of changes, both physically and emotionally. This lyric speaks to the struggles of understanding oneself and others during this time. As adolescents, we often find ourselves grappling with new identities, social dynamics, and expectations. The uncertainty that comes with trying to navigate friendships, family relationships, and personal growth can be overwhelming. This lyric captures that feeling of being surrounded by people yet still feeling isolated. It reflects the difficulty of communicating emotions and the challenges of supporting others when we’re still trying to figure ourselves out. The essence of adolescence lies in the search for belonging and understanding, both of oneself and the people around us. During this time, we often encounter peers who may be experiencing their own hardships. The line resonates with the idea that, while we may sense that someone is struggling, it can be challenging to articulate what we’re feeling or how to help them. It highlights the awkwardness of trying to reach out to friends when we are also grappling with our own issues. The vulnerability that comes with these interactions is a hallmark of teenage life, as we often fear rejection or misunderstanding. Furthermore, the lyric underscores the emotional rollercoaster that many teenagers experience. The phrase “I can tell you’re not okay” suggests a level of empathy and awareness that comes with adolescence. We may not always have the words to express our feelings, but we can often pick up on the subtle signs of distress in those around us. This sensitivity to the emotions of others can lead to profound connections, but it can also create an emotional burden when we feel powerless to help. It reminds me of the times I’ve seen friends struggle and felt a strong desire to support them, even when I was uncertain about how to approach the situation. In addition, this lyric reflects the broader theme of mental health, which has become increasingly important among teenagers today. Many of us are facing pressures from school, social media, and societal expectations that can lead to anxiety and feelings of inadequacy. Rodrigo’s ability to articulate these struggles in her music helps to normalize conversations about mental health. By sharing her experiences, she gives voice to the feelings that many teenagers experience but may not know how to express. In conclusion, the lyric from Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS encapsulates the essence of adolescence, highlighting the challenges of navigating emotions, relationships, and self-identity. It speaks to the feelings of confusion and vulnerability that often accompany this stage of life, as well as the importance of empathy in understanding one another. As teenagers, we are continually learning how to communicate our feelings and support those around us. This lyric resonates with me because it reflects the struggles we face while also reminding us of the profound connections we can make during this tumultuous time.
    LeBron James Fan Scholarship
I am a fan of LeBron James for numerous reasons that extend beyond his incredible skills on the basketball court. His combination of talent, work ethic, and social impact makes him not only a phenomenal athlete but also a compelling role model. On the court, LeBron’s versatility is unmatched. He possesses a unique blend of size, strength, and agility, allowing him to dominate as a forward while also effectively playing multiple positions. His basketball IQ is extraordinary; he has an innate ability to read the game, make quick decisions, and create opportunities for his teammates. This was particularly evident during his time with the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers, where he not only excelled as a scorer but also as a facilitator, leading to remarkable team success. His performance in crucial moments, including four NBA championships and numerous Finals MVP awards, solidifies his reputation as one of the best players in history. However, what truly sets LeBron apart is his commitment to using his platform for positive change. He has consistently advocated for social justice issues, including racial equality and education reform. His “I PROMISE” school in Akron, Ohio, demonstrates his dedication to empowering young people through education. By investing in his community, LeBron has shown that athletes can be powerful agents for change. This commitment to making a difference resonates deeply with me, as it reflects the importance of using one’s voice and resources to uplift others. When discussing whether LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time, opinions can vary significantly. Many fans argue that Michael Jordan holds that title due to his six championships and flawless Finals record. Others point to the era in which Jordan played and how the game has evolved since then. LeBron, with his impressive longevity and adaptability, has excelled across different teams and circumstances, which adds to his case. While I respect the debate surrounding “the greatest of all time,” I believe that greatness can be measured in different ways. LeBron’s impact on and off the court is profound. He has consistently broken records, achieved milestones, and maintained an extraordinary level of performance well into his 30s, something few players have accomplished. His ability to elevate the players around him and lead teams to success in various environments showcases a different kind of greatness. In conclusion, my admiration for LeBron James goes beyond his accolades and statistics. He embodies the qualities of a great athlete and a responsible leader, using his platform to inspire others. While the debate over who is the greatest basketball player of all time may continue, what is undeniable is LeBron’s lasting impact on the sport and society as a whole. Whether you view him as the GOAT or not, his legacy will undoubtedly shape future generations of athletes and fans alike.
    Team USA Fan Scholarship
Beezie Madden is one of the most inspiring athletes on Team USA, and cheering for her has always been a source of pride for me. As a prominent show jumper, she has made an indelible mark on the sport, not just through her impressive accomplishments, but also by exemplifying the values of dedication, resilience, and sportsmanship. One of the most remarkable aspects of Beezie’s career is her remarkable consistency at the highest levels of competition. She has competed in multiple Olympic Games, winning two gold medals (2004 and 2008) and a bronze medal (2016). Each of these achievements is a testament to her hard work, skill, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Watching her compete is exhilarating; her ability to navigate challenging courses with precision and grace showcases not just her talent but also the incredible bond she shares with her horses. What truly resonates with me is Beezie’s sportsmanship and humility. In a sport that can sometimes be cutthroat, she remains grounded and gracious, celebrating not only her victories but also the achievements of her fellow riders. Her respect for her competitors and her emphasis on teamwork, especially in team events, highlights her belief in the spirit of equestrian sports. She often credits her horses for their contributions to her success, emphasizing the partnership that exists between rider and horse, which I find incredibly inspiring. Additionally, Beezie has been a role model for many young equestrians, particularly women in the sport. She has broken barriers and set a high standard for what is possible in show jumping, proving that with determination and hard work, one can achieve greatness. Her influence extends beyond the competitive arena, as she actively supports and mentors younger riders, helping to foster the next generation of equestrian talent. This commitment to giving back to the sport resonates with my own desire to make a positive impact in my community and the equestrian world. Beyond her athletic prowess, Beezie has also faced challenges throughout her career, including injuries and setbacks. However, her resilience in overcoming these obstacles is truly commendable. She has shown that setbacks are not the end but rather opportunities for growth and learning. This perspective has inspired me to adopt a similar mindset in my own pursuits, reminding me that perseverance is key to achieving my goals, whether in sports or other areas of life. In conclusion, Beezie Madden embodies the spirit of excellence and dedication that makes her one of my favorite athletes to cheer for on Team USA. Her accomplishments in show jumping, coupled with her sportsmanship and commitment to supporting future riders, make her a remarkable role model. As I continue to pursue my own goals, I will carry her example with me, using her journey as inspiration to work hard, remain humble, and support others along the way. Beezie Madden is not just an athlete; she is a source of motivation and a symbol of what can be achieved through passion and perseverance.
    Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish’s music has a way of resonating deeply with listeners, and her ability to capture complex emotions and experiences is one of the reasons I admire her work. Among her many songs, three stand out to me for their profound meanings: “Everything I Wanted,” “When the Party’s Over,” and “My Future.” Each of these tracks speaks to different aspects of life, self-acceptance, and the journey of growing up. “Everything I Wanted” explores the intricate relationship between success and self-worth. In this song, Billie shares her struggles with mental health and the pressures of fame. The lyrics reflect the fear of not living up to expectations, both from the outside world and from oneself. This message resonates with me, as I often feel the weight of my goals and aspirations. The line about feeling alone despite achievements speaks to the common experience of those who strive for success while grappling with feelings of inadequacy. Ultimately, the song conveys a message of resilience and the importance of relying on loved ones during challenging times. It reminds me that, even when I feel overwhelmed by my ambitions, I can find solace in the support of my family and friends. “When the Party’s Over” delves into the emotional aftermath of difficult choices, particularly those involving relationships. The haunting melody and poignant lyrics capture the pain of letting go and the sense of longing that can follow. Billie’s vulnerability in this song resonates with my own experiences of navigating relationships and the heartache that sometimes accompanies them. The idea of walking away from something that no longer serves you is a powerful reminder that it’s okay to prioritize one’s well-being, even if it comes at a cost. This theme of self-preservation is especially important as I continue to grow and define my own boundaries in various aspects of my life. “My Future” is an uplifting anthem about self-discovery and personal growth. In this song, Billie reflects on the importance of looking forward and embracing the journey of becoming who you are meant to be. The lyrics emphasize the idea of independence and the excitement of what lies ahead. As I approach college and think about my future, this song inspires me to focus on my own path and aspirations rather than comparing myself to others. It serves as a reminder that personal growth is a continuous process, and that the future is filled with possibilities. In conclusion, Billie Eilish’s music resonates with me on multiple levels, providing comfort and insight into the complexities of life. “Everything I Wanted,” “When the Party’s Over,” and “My Future” each capture different emotional landscapes that are relevant to my own experiences. Through her lyrics, Billie invites listeners to embrace their vulnerabilities, reflect on their relationships, and look forward with hope. Her ability to articulate these feelings helps me navigate my own journey and reinforces the idea that it’s okay to seek support, let go of what no longer serves us, and remain hopeful for the future.
Ryan Stripling “Words Create Worlds” Scholarship for Young Writers
Writing has always been a passion of mine, ever since I was young. I didn’t learn to read until the second grade, but when I finally did, I dove in with full force. I quickly became the best reader in my class, and from that point on, my love for both reading and writing only grew. Writing became an outlet for my imagination and a way to explore the world around me. In sixth grade, I wrote a story that spanned over 10 pages—an accomplishment that, at the time, felt like a huge milestone. Since then, writing has remained a constant part of my life, and I’ve continued to hone my skills, particularly when it comes to writing essays. What I love most about writing is the way it allows me to organize my thoughts, share my ideas, and express my emotions. There’s something incredibly satisfying about putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and watching as your thoughts take shape, evolving into a coherent narrative or argument. Writing essays, in particular, has become a favorite of mine. I enjoy the process of analyzing a topic, forming a thesis, and building a logical, well-supported argument. It’s a challenge that pushes me to think critically and articulate my thoughts in a clear and compelling way. Writing has also taught me to be patient and reflective. It’s not always easy to get the right words down, but the process of editing and revising has shown me the value of persistence and attention to detail. Whether it’s a creative piece or an academic essay, writing has a way of revealing deeper layers of thought and meaning. This is why I’m so passionate about continuing to write when I go to college. I see it as a way to keep growing, both intellectually and creatively. In college, I plan to continue exploring my love for writing in several ways. First and foremost, I’ll be able to engage in academic writing through my coursework, which I’m genuinely excited about. Whether it’s writing research papers, essays, or creative projects, I know that writing will be a significant part of my college experience. Beyond academic writing, I also hope to find opportunities to write creatively again, whether through classes, student publications, or simply writing for fun in my free time. Additionally, I’d love to get involved with a college writing center or peer tutoring program. Helping others improve their writing is something I’ve always enjoyed, and I think it would be a great way to stay engaged with writing on a deeper level. By helping others strengthen their skills, I’ll also be learning and growing as a writer myself. Overall, writing has been a key part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I’m excited to carry that passion into college. It’s not just a skill I’ve developed, but something that brings me joy and fulfillment, and I look forward to continuing to use it as a tool for learning, self-expression, and making an impact in the world around me..
    Krewe de HOU Scholarship
Growing up in Lufkin, Texas, I’ve had the privilege of being part of a community that values hard work and service. Through my involvement in various extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and community service, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how I can contribute and help those around me, and I’m determined to make a positive impact on my community. As the president of the Lufkin FFA during my high school years, I’ve learned the importance of leadership, teamwork, and dedication to a cause greater than myself. FFA has given me the opportunity to develop my skills in public speaking, event coordination, and mentorship. Leading younger members and organizing events like the Lufkin FFA Back to School Livestock Show has shown me how impactful agriculture is in our town, and I plan to continue advocating for its importance. My passion for agriculture doesn’t stop with leadership; I’m also deeply involved in rodeo through the Texas High School Rodeo Association and cutting horse competitions with both the National Cutting Horse Association and the American Cutting Horse Association. Balancing my time between FFA, rodeo, volleyball, and clubs like the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society has taught me valuable lessons in time management and commitment. Each of these activities has given me a unique perspective on how to serve others, whether it’s through mentoring younger athletes on my previous volleyball team or encouraging my peers to make healthy, drug-free choices as part of the Drug Free All Stars. Community service is another area where I’ve found fulfillment. Whether I’m helping with the Angelina County Fall Festival or volunteering for Toys for Tots, I’ve come to realize that service is the backbone of a strong community. Through programs like Project Celebration and Vacation Bible School at Keltys Church, I’ve learned that even small acts of kindness can create ripple effects in people’s lives. These experiences have instilled in me a lifelong commitment to helping others. My hands-on experience at Lone Star Vet Clinic has further solidified my desire to make a difference in Lufkin through animal care. Assisting the vet and staff with medical procedures, treatments, and day-to-day animal care has not only deepened my love for animals but also shown me the vital role veterinarians play in supporting rural communities like mine. I plan to use the skills I’ve learned to become a large animal veterinarian, specializing in equine lameness, to support local ranchers, horse owners, and competitors. In the future, I see myself combining my passion for veterinary medicine, agriculture, and service to make a meaningful impact in my community. Whether through mentoring the next generation of FFA leaders or providing critical care for animals, I am committed to ensuring that Lufkin continues to thrive.
Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
Growing up in a blended family has deeply shaped my perspective on relationships, responsibilities, and the kind of future I want to create for myself. Having divorced parents introduced me to the reality of change and hardship at a very young age. My family structure evolved several times over the years, and while some aspects have been challenging, the experience has also made me more adaptable, compassionate, and understanding of different perspectives. When my dad remarried in 2020, after my stepmom had been in my life for nearly a decade, I thought I had adjusted to the idea of a blended family. However, with a significant age difference between her and my dad—she’s just 30—the dynamic brought unexpected challenges. Sometimes, it felt like I was navigating a friendship more than a traditional parent-child relationship. Despite this, we’ve worked to build mutual respect, and her role in my life has ultimately been positive. Then, my step-mom and dad adopted a five-year-old girl from Colombia, and while I initially had doubts about how that would impact our family, she has been a wonderful addition. Her personality, love, and joy have reminded me that family isn’t defined by blood but by the connections we choose to nurture. On my mom’s side, the changes continued when she remarried after dating my stepdad for ten years. Suddenly, I found myself with four new stepsisters, adding to the complexity of an already large family. While it can be overwhelming to balance relationships with seven siblings—my full brother and sister, my adopted sister, and my four stepsisters—it has also taught me the importance of patience, communication, and selflessness. I’ve had to learn to share my time and space while still maintaining my individuality and my sanity. This experience of navigating multiple family relationships has not only made me more flexible and empathetic but has also given me a unique perspective on what it means to support others. Looking toward the future, I see these traits guiding my ambitions. I hope to use the lessons learned from my family—about resilience, adaptation, and unconditional love—in a meaningful way, whether as a veterinarian or in another career that involves helping people and animals. No matter what path I ultimately take, I’m determined to make a positive impact on others’ lives, just as my family has shaped mine. Having grown up with so many siblings and in such varied environments, I’ve come to realize the importance of understanding people’s unique needs and supporting them through life’s transitions. My goal is to channel that understanding and the patience I’ve developed into a future where I can serve others. Whether through my dream of becoming a veterinarian or another calling, I believe that my upbringing has prepared me to approach the world with compassion and a genuine desire to make a difference.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
From a young age, I have been captivated by the idea of being a veterinarian. What began as a silly childhood dream has since grown into a deep-rooted passion, particularly in the equine industry. My love for animals, especially horses, has been a guiding force throughout my entire life. Growing up in the showbarn and being actively involved in organizations like FFA, cutting, and rodeo, I have witnessed the crucial role veterinarians play in maintaining the health and well-being of these animals. The bond between horse and owner is truly magical, and I am eager to dedicate my life to ensuring that these connections are protected. My experiences in the animal world have only strengthened my resolve to become a veterinarian, where I can combine my love for animals with my commitment to the agriculture industry. I am determined to contribute to the field by providing my compassionate care, expert knowledge, and unwavering dedication, helping to sustain the bond between human and animals. This journey is not just about fulfilling a dream, but following a calling that has been with me for as long as I can remember. I am driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact, not just by providing medical care but by offering compassionate support to both animals and their owners. Horses, in particular, are special creatures that often carry a great emotional and even financial significance for their owners. I've experienced firsthand the joy, companionship, and responsibility that come with caring for them. The idea that I could play a role in maintaining their health and happiness is something that fills me with both excitement and purpose. In pursuing veterinary medicine, I am also excited about the opportunity to merge my passion for animal care with my commitment to the agriculture industry. Agriculture has been a core part of my upbringing, and I believe that vets play an essential role in sustaining this industry by caring for the animals that are at its heart. Ultimately, my goal is to become a veterinarian who not only heals but also advocates for the animals I care for.

Losing my grandpa, also known as Pop, to brain cancer was one of the most significant and shaping experiences of my life. Though I was young when he passed, the memories of him before his illness are just as vivid and full of life as he once was. Pop had the biggest laugh I've ever heard- so loud that it would literally echo through the house. His smile was just as big, and no matter what life threw at him, he never seemed to lose it. It was the type of smile that made a stranger smile and long for a joy as great as his. Occasionally, I get glimpses of his smile and hear a subtle reminisce of his laugh, pushing me to be as full of love as he was. One of my favorite memories of Pop was dancing with him. My siblings, cousins, and any kid who needed it would stand on his feet as he swayed side to side, clapping his hands and laughing that huge, cheerful laugh of his. It was pure happiness, and even though it was so simple, those moments meant the world to me. It was a time of bliss, nothing else mattered- just the laughter, the dancing, and the love that he radiated. When Pop was diagnosed with brain cancer, everything changed. Watching him go through that was absolutely heartbreaking. The man who once blessed the world with his joy, became distant, quieter, and eventually, he was no longer the Pop we knew. It was painful to see someone so full of life lose everything, and it deeply affected everyone who had the honor of knowing my Pop. For me, I didn’t understand what was happening, but I soon came to know that it was a difficult lesson of how unfair and fragile life can be. His death wasn’t just a loss for me, it was a loss for all. Watching my dad, mom, grandma, family, friends, and strangers grieve showed me how precious everything I cherish is. Through the hardship and grief, we found our comfort in each other and our faith. Turning to God during this time helped me process the pain and find peace in knowing where Pop was going. It strengthened our bond as a family, and we began to lean on our faith in ways we hadn’t before. Driving Pop’s truck now, where he always kept a stash of soft peppermints and a Harley Davidson sticker, I feel connected to him and all the things he taught me. While our time was cut much too short, I know Pop was a man filled with joy, love for his family, and true faith. His laughter, his dances, and his unwavering smile have become symbols of how I want to live my life. Even though his death was one of the hardest parts of my life, it ultimately shaped me into the person I am today. The best compliment I hear is “he would be so proud”.
