My name is Claire Narrows. I am a transgender woman who has faced numerous challenges throughout my life. I will be commencing my studies at Arizona College of Nursing in early 2025. I was born and raised in Ohio. Being transgender has had both positive and negative impacts on my life. My mental well-being has significantly improved since embracing my true self. Previously, I harbored anger and resentment towards others, but these emotions were ultimately directed at myself for denying myself the joy and fulfillment of living as a transgender woman. This realization has also motivated me to assist others in similar situations. I commenced my HRT treatment in February 2022, which was life-altering and life-saving. There were numerous instances throughout the year when the thought of ending my life seemed appealing. It is a somber truth, but it is also an accurate statement. By reaching that level of despair, I have only strengthened my resolve to advocate for a more accommodating medical field for all LGBT+ individuals, particularly trans individuals. I have chosen to pursue a nursing degree because I have always been drawn to the medical field. I currently work in a hospital and have witnessed firsthand the invaluable work of nurses. I have also observed the misunderstanding and mistreatment of LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly transgender patients. My passion for helping others is unwavering. There is no greater reward than witnessing someone overcome health challenges and achieve a full recovery. This is a sacred responsibility that upholds the most fundamental values. I have always been a caregiver. My journey began when I was in high school, when I took on the role of my brother’s caregiver while my parents were working. My brother was diagnosed with a rare disease called Hidradenitis suppurativa, which he battled for many years. Through unwavering determination, we managed to gain control over his condition. In 2012, my father suffered gangrene, resulting in the loss of his leg and subsequent disability, necessitating his use of a wheelchair. I provided him with care for several years until his passing in 2019. I made a promise to him to pursue a career that would not only provide financial security but also fulfill my spiritual aspirations. I intend to continue my work in the hospital while pursuing my nursing degree to enhance my skills and knowledge at a accelerated pace. My sister has had a profound influence on my career aspirations. She holds a nursing degree and is highly respected within the hospital where we work. Her unwavering dedication to improving lives has led her to become a nursing supervisor. To follow in her footsteps would be an honor and a fulfillment of the promises I made to my late father and mother, whom I currently care for.

My personal beliefs remain steadfast, and I prioritize them over those of others. However, my relationships have been adversely affected. Unfortunately, I have lost individuals I considered friends due to their discriminatory views towards transgender individuals. This experience has provided clarity on who I value and who I do not. I have chosen to pursue a nursing degree because I have always been drawn to the medical field. I currently work in a hospital and have witnessed firsthand the invaluable work of nurses.
