“Purpose, Representation, and Progress: My Goals in Healthcare” My goals for my medical career are deeply rooted in purpose, personal growth, and a desire to elevate others. I aim to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), a role that demands excellence in clinical judgment, precision, and patient-centered care. But beyond achieving personal success, I’m driven by a larger mission: to serve as a mentor, a role model, and an advocate for racial diversity in healthcare—especially for young Black males who may not see themselves reflected in the profession. Growing up in a single-parent household, I learned early on that challenges can either break you or build you. I chose the latter. My upbringing taught me the value of perseverance, discipline, and service—qualities that naturally led me to nursing. As I progressed through school and clinical practice, I became more aware of the lack of Black male representation in advanced nursing roles. This realization didn’t discourage me; it motivated me. I knew then that my presence in this field wasn’t just about personal achievement—it was about paving the way for others who look like me. Becoming a CRNA is not just a career goal—it’s a calling. The critical role CRNAs play in surgery, trauma care, and pain management requires a high level of expertise and accountability. I am prepared to meet those standards through continued education, hands-on experience, and a commitment to lifelong learning. But beyond technical proficiency, I am equally focused on using my platform to mentor others. I am already doing this informally—mentoring young men in my community, speaking with aspiring healthcare students, and offering guidance through personal and academic challenges. I want to continue and expand this work as I grow in my profession. One of my long-term goals is to create a scholarship for young Black males pursuing healthcare careers. Financial barriers are one of the biggest obstacles for students from underrepresented communities, and I want to be part of the solution. This scholarship would go beyond funding—it would include mentorship, networking opportunities, and personal development support to help ensure these students not only enter the field, but thrive in it. Increasing racial diversity in healthcare is critical. Representation matters—not just for professionals, but for patients. When patients see healthcare providers who share their background or culture, trust increases and outcomes improve. Diversity brings broader perspectives, cultural sensitivity, and deeper empathy into the healthcare system. It helps break down systemic barriers and creates a more just and equitable environment for all. As a Black man pursuing a high-level medical role, I understand the responsibility that comes with visibility. I want to be part of a generation of healthcare professionals who not only care for patients but also lead change within the industry. My goal is to build a career that blends clinical excellence with advocacy and mentorship—to heal, to lead, and to uplift. With each step I take toward becoming a CRNA, I am not just moving forward for myself—I’m building a path for those who will follow.

“Lifting as I Climb: Building a Healthier, More Empowered Community” If given the opportunity, I would dedicate myself to uplifting and empowering my community through mentorship, healthcare service, and the creation of opportunities for young Black males aspiring to enter the medical field. My journey has shown me the power of support, representation, and resilience. Now, I feel a deep responsibility to give back—not someday in the distant future, but now, and every day moving forward. Growing up as a young Black male in a single-parent household, I didn’t always see people in professional roles who looked like me. Representation matters—it shapes what we believe is possible. I had to learn how to believe in myself without many role models in the healthcare field to guide me. That challenge made me stronger, but it also fueled a desire to change that narrative for others. I want to be the person I needed when I was younger: a mentor, an advocate, and an example. Today, I’m already mentoring young men in my community. Whether it’s through informal conversations, academic support, or sharing my own experiences as a nursing student and single father, I’ve made it a personal mission to inspire those around me. I talk with high school students about healthcare careers, help peers manage their academic responsibilities, and offer encouragement to those who feel overwhelmed. I want them to know that their background doesn’t define their future. What matters is their commitment, their values, and their willingness to work for their goals. But mentorship is only the beginning. Long term, one of my biggest aspirations is to create a scholarship specifically for young Black males pursuing careers in healthcare. The financial burden of education is one of the biggest barriers for students like me. I know what it feels like to chase a dream while wondering how you’ll pay for the next semester, and I want to help remove that burden for others. My vision is to establish a scholarship fund that not only offers financial support but also includes mentoring, networking, and access to resources that build confidence and community. Improving my community means more than just giving back—it means creating sustainable change. When we support underrepresented voices in healthcare, we don’t just help individuals; we transform systems. We bring new perspectives, cultural competence, and empathy to patient care. We inspire others to follow the same path. And we begin to close the gaps in health equity that have existed for far too long. This mission is deeply personal to me because I’ve lived both the struggle and the growth. I’ve overcome obstacles, defied expectations, and proven to myself that success is possible through discipline and vision. Now, I want to help others write their own success stories—starting with belief, fueled by opportunity. When I look at my community, I see potential. My goal is to unlock that potential one person at a time—by mentoring, supporting, and investing in the next generation of healthcare leaders.

“From Adversity to Ambition: How My Upbringing Shaped My Purpose” Growing up in a single-parent household taught me lessons that no textbook ever could—lessons about resilience, sacrifice, and the power of determination. While some may view this upbringing as a disadvantage, I see it as the foundation of who I am today: a devoted father, a driven nursing student, and a man committed to achieving his goals regardless of the obstacles in front of him. Watching my parent work tirelessly to provide for our family left a lasting impression on me. There were times when resources were tight, and responsibilities came early, but those experiences gave me a deep sense of responsibility and an appreciation for hard work. I learned that success doesn’t come easy—it’s earned through grit, persistence, and belief in something greater than your circumstances. Those values became the cornerstone of my ambition. Rather than allowing my background to limit me, I chose to use it as motivation. I realized early on that I wanted to build a life defined by purpose, not hardship. That’s what led me to nursing—a profession rooted in service, strength, and compassion. I’ve seen firsthand what it means to struggle without proper support, and I want to be a source of strength for others, just as nurses have been for my family and me. Becoming a single parent myself brought everything full circle. The experience didn’t intimidate me—it prepared me. Growing up in a single-parent home gave me insight into the resilience it takes to raise a child alone. I knew the importance of structure, presence, and emotional support, and I was determined to provide all those things and more for my child. Being a father has made me stronger, more empathetic, and more disciplined. It’s also made my goals more urgent, because I know my success isn’t just for me—it’s for my child’s future. Balancing parenthood, work, and education isn’t easy, but I’ve never let it be an excuse. In fact, it’s my motivation. Every time I show up for a lecture after a sleepless night, every time I study while helping with homework, every time I push through a hard day—I remind myself that I’m building something lasting. I want to show my child, and others who come from similar backgrounds, that your beginning does not define your end. What defines you is how you respond to adversity and the choices you make in the face of it. My ambition to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist is rooted in this mindset. I want to reach the highest levels of clinical practice, not just for professional advancement, but to be a role model—to show that even when the odds are stacked against you, you can still rise. Growing up in a single-parent household didn’t hold me back. It made me. It instilled in me a sense of purpose, the drive to succeed, and the heart to lead—with strength, compassion, and unwavering commitment. I owe it to my child to be the very best.

“Driven by Purpose: Why I Chose Nursing and Where It’s Taking Me” The nursing profession speaks to every part of who I am—compassionate, resilient, determined, and motivated by a desire to make a meaningful impact. Nursing is more than a career; it’s a calling, one rooted in service, human connection, and a commitment to healing. What draws me to this field is its unique ability to blend science and empathy, technical skill and emotional intelligence. Every day, nurses step into the lives of others during moments of need, and that responsibility is both humbling and inspiring. My journey toward nursing began with personal experiences that shaped my understanding of health care. As a single father, I’ve been both caregiver and advocate for my child, navigating health concerns with limited resources but unwavering determination. I’ve sat at hospital bedsides, coordinated care, and felt the relief that only a kind, attentive nurse can provide. These experiences opened my eyes to the vital role nurses play—not just in clinical outcomes, but in the emotional well-being of patients and families. Professionally, I’ve pursued every opportunity to grow in the healthcare field. I have completed clinical rotations across various specialties, gaining hands-on experience and building a strong foundation in patient care, communication, and teamwork. These experiences have helped me develop the confidence and skills needed to thrive in fast-paced, high-pressure environments. I’ve worked with patients of diverse backgrounds, learning to tailor care with cultural sensitivity and empathy. Each interaction has reinforced my belief that nursing is where I belong. My goals in nursing are clear and ambitious. I aspire to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), a role that requires not only advanced clinical training but also exceptional precision and accountability. I am drawn to the challenge of anesthesia care and the opportunity to be a vital part of a surgical team. This goal drives everything I do—from my studies to my work ethic—and I am fully committed to the path of continued education, hands-on training, and professional development. In pursuit of this goal, I’ve already achieved personal milestones that I’m proud of. Balancing fatherhood with a demanding nursing program is no easy task, yet I’ve managed to excel academically while also providing a stable, nurturing environment for my child. Relocating from Miami, Florida, to Virginia to pursue better educational opportunities was another major step in my journey—one that required courage, sacrifice, and long-term vision. I consider my ability to connect with people one of my greatest strengths. I’m often described as a “people person,” and I’ve found that this natural quality allows me to build trust with patients and colleagues alike. In a field as collaborative and personal as nursing, this skill is invaluable. Ultimately, nursing offers me the chance to fulfill my purpose: to care, to serve, and to grow. With every challenge I’ve faced and every opportunity I’ve seized, I’ve become more prepared to meet that purpose with strength and compassion.

“A Vision Beyond the Bedside: My Commitment to Advanced Practice Nursing” Graduation from nursing school will not be the end of my academic journey—it will be the beginning of a deeper mission. While earning my BSN has laid a strong foundation, I know that to fulfill my potential and serve my community in the most impactful way, I must continue my education and pursue advanced practice nursing. Specifically, I am committed to becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)—a career path that blends clinical excellence, precision, and purpose. The decision to become a CRNA stems from both my personal experiences and professional aspirations. As a single father, I’ve been driven by the belief that challenges are meant to be transformed into motivation. Every obstacle I’ve overcome—relocating from Miami, Florida, to Virginia, balancing school and parenting, and working through long shifts—has only strengthened my desire to push forward. I am inspired not only by what I’ve accomplished so far, but by what lies ahead. My passion for anesthesia began during my clinical rotations, where I had the opportunity to observe the critical role CRNAs play in surgical and emergency care. I was struck by their calm under pressure, their intricate knowledge of pharmacology and physiology, and their ability to provide life-sustaining interventions with confidence and care. CRNAs are more than providers—they are protectors of patients at their most vulnerable. That level of responsibility and expertise speaks to my values and long-term goals as a healthcare professional. Pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a focus in nurse anesthesia is not only a career aspiration; it is a calling. I am drawn to the advanced skills, lifelong learning, and leadership opportunities that come with this path. The CRNA role would allow me to work autonomously, collaborate closely with surgical teams, and impact patient outcomes on a higher level. I am excited about the challenge and ready to commit to the rigorous education and clinical preparation this field demands. My interest in anesthesia also aligns with my natural strengths—attention to detail, critical thinking, and a calm, steady demeanor under stress. These qualities have been shaped by my life experiences, especially as a single parent and team player in clinical settings. I’ve learned how to lead when necessary, support when needed, and always keep the well-being of others at the center of my actions. Continuing my education will not only elevate my career—it will also set an example for my child and others who may doubt what’s possible in the face of adversity. I want to show that with discipline, heart, and vision, anyone can rise above their circumstances and make a difference in the world. In the years ahead, I look forward to becoming a CRNA, serving patients with skill and compassion, and advancing the profession of nursing through advocacy, mentorship, and excellence in practice.

“From Sleepless Nights to Selfless Service: My Journey Into Nursing” Growing up, I never imagined that my most defining moments would come not from comfort, but from challenge. As a single father, I’ve faced many sleepless nights—navigating work, parenthood, and education—but those very moments have revealed my strength, compassion, and purpose. It was through caring for my child during sickness, and watching the dedication of nurses in moments of vulnerability, that I discovered where my heart truly belongs: in the field of nursing. My decision to pursue a career in nursing didn’t come from a single moment, but rather a series of meaningful experiences. From a young age, I was drawn to helping others—family, friends, neighbors. However, it wasn’t until I witnessed the transformative power of nursing firsthand that I knew it was my calling. During a difficult hospital stay with a family member, I observed how the nurses didn’t just treat the illness—they treated the person. Their empathy, skill, and emotional intelligence lit a spark in me that hasn’t dimmed since. Relocating from Miami, Florida, to Virginia marked a new chapter in my life. It was a leap of faith driven by a desire to grow, both personally and professionally. In Virginia, I found not only a supportive community but also the educational opportunities that aligned with my dream of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). The more I learn, the deeper my respect grows for this profession. I’m inspired by the ability of nurses to be both technical experts and human touchpoints in people’s most critical moments. As a single parent, I’ve developed qualities that naturally align with nursing: resilience, patience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to care. These are not just life skills; they are nursing skills. I’ve learned how to manage chaos with calm, to comfort in times of fear, and to always keep going, even when things are tough. I see these qualities reflected in the nurses I admire, and I strive every day to embody them myself. What inspires me most is knowing that as a nurse, I’ll be part of something bigger than myself. I’ll be a vital piece of a healthcare system that saves lives, uplifts communities, and delivers hope. My ultimate goal is to become a CRNA because I want to be at the forefront of patient safety and surgical care. I’m driven by a passion for precision, learning, and leadership—and the desire to serve with excellence. Nursing is not just a career for me; it’s a calling that connects who I am with who I aspire to be. With every class I take and every shift I work, I am building a future where I can make a lasting difference. I learned about this scholarship opportunity through Sallie Mae

Personal Statement: My Journey to a Career in Nursing By Cedric Jackson The first time I watched my mother save a life—not in a hospital, but right in our neighborhood—I knew I wanted to be like her. My name is Cedric Jackson, and I’m a single father to a beautiful 14-year-old daughter. I’ve worked full-time while pursuing my education and maintaining a GPA above 3.0, driven by a passion to change the trajectory of my family’s future and make a lasting difference in my community through nursing. Growing up with a mother who was a nurse taught me more than just the technical aspects of the profession—I learned what it truly means to care. She showed me how nursing can be a calling, one that combines skill, compassion, and faith. As a Christian, helping others is at the heart of who I am, and I view nursing as a powerful way to live out my faith in action. I’m especially drawn to the field of nurse anesthesia. My ultimate goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)—a role that blends advanced clinical knowledge, precision, and responsibility in ways that directly impact patient safety and comfort. I am fascinated by the science behind anesthesia, and equally inspired by the trust patients place in their healthcare team during their most vulnerable moments. I want to be the kind of nurse who brings not only clinical excellence, but also peace and reassurance to every patient encounter. Balancing work, parenting, and school has come with its challenges, but it’s also revealed my resilience. I’ve had to manage time wisely, stay disciplined, and lean on my faith to keep moving forward. Through it all, my daughter has been my greatest motivation. I want her to see that no matter where you start, it’s possible to create a new legacy—one built on determination, integrity, and service. In addition to my academic and career goals, I am deeply committed to giving back to my community. Whether it’s mentoring youth, volunteering at health fairs, or simply lending a hand to those in need, I believe every act of kindness can create a ripple effect. Nursing gives me the platform to expand that impact, reaching people in their most critical moments and offering both care and hope. I am proud of how far I’ve come, and even more excited about where I’m headed. The journey to becoming a CRNA is not just a career path for me—it’s a mission. I am prepared, passionate, and ready to serve with excellence and heart. Thank you for considering my application. Personal Statement: Why I Chose a Career in Nursing The smell of hospital-grade hand sanitizer and the gentle beeping of monitors are oddly comforting to me—reminders of the many nights I spent waiting for my mother to finish her shift as a nurse. I didn’t realize it then, but those moments planted the seed of a lifelong calling. Watching her come home with stories of resilience, hope, and healing inspired me to pursue a career that blends scientific knowledge with human compassion. I knew early on that I wanted to follow in her footsteps—not because she asked me to, but because I saw the difference she made in people’s lives. Growing up with a nurse for a mother shaped how I view the world. I’ve seen her balance long shifts with caring for our family, always showing strength, empathy, and patience. She never saw her job as just a profession—it was a mission. Whether she was comforting a scared child or advocating for an elderly patient, she treated every individual with dignity and respect. Her example taught me that nursing is not just about treating illness, but about caring for the whole person. That lesson stayed with me and ignited a passion I couldn’t ignore. When I began volunteering at a local clinic in high school, I quickly realized that the values instilled in me at home had prepared me well. I found fulfillment in helping patients navigate the healthcare system, listening to their concerns, and assisting the medical staff in any way I could. The clinical environment felt familiar, even natural. My time there solidified my decision: nursing wasn’t just something I admired—it was what I was meant to do. What excites me most about nursing is its unique blend of science, critical thinking, and empathy. It’s a profession that requires both a sharp mind and a compassionate heart. I am eager to develop the skills needed to assess, diagnose, and treat patients while never losing sight of their humanity. I want to be the nurse who holds a patient’s hand during a frightening diagnosis, who comforts a family in crisis, and who celebrates with them when healing begins. My decision to pursue nursing is not based on a single moment but rather a lifetime of witnessing what true care looks like. My mother didn’t just inspire me to become a nurse—she showed me how to be a good one. I am committed to carrying forward her legacy of compassion, advocacy, and excellence. In choosing nursing, I’m choosing to make a meaningful impact every day. I’m choosing to be there for others in their most vulnerable moments. And I’m choosing a path that feels less like a job and more like a purpose. That, to me, is the heart of nursing.
