My Name is Cierra Coats I am an Early Childhood Education as well as disabled . I enrolled back in community college to become an English teacher. I have a passion for Teaching the youth and future of our country essentials such as proper grammar and pronunciation. My father passed away when I was 16 and I was sexually assaulted at the age of 9 years old resulting in multiple mental illnesses that I struggle with daily. I learned almost all my knowledge growing up from my Grandfather, U.S. Marine, Harry B Shuman. Following my re-enrollment into college my grandfather whom I was living and taking care of passed away November 31ST of 2024 and I lost a close friend of 10 years to suicide April 11th, 2025. I am currently a substitute teacher for Miami Dade County and will be seen by multiple doctors for my breast cancer diagnosis later this year. My struggles give me drive, I have been enrolling in classes every semester keeping high grades and perfect attendance without knowing if my financial aid finally got accepted and/or before getting kicked out due to lack of funds. I want to be something in life and have a future. I don’t want to be a reflection of my past struggles no longer and I want to give kids a better future. If allowed to succeed and learn I would never waste it.

From proper spelling to pronunciation and grammar, English is the most important subject for children this age. I have found the path where I can make a difference and educate children from all walks of life.

Being the child of parents who did not finish middle school, I found the transition from high school to college extremely challenging and overwhelming. My mental illnesses stem from being sexually assaulted at the age of 9 and 13 years old. I suffer from anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. As a result, I was absent from school frequently due to court appearances for most of my early school years. I was on various medications to help regulate my illnesses when I entered my first college semesters, which severely impacted my studies. I lacked so much knowledge due to the lack of education and low income in my family. At the time, I did not know what major/career path I wanted to pursue, nor did I invest much time in planning for the future. In the year 2016, my father died of AIDS/HIV just before I enrolled in college courses. While battling my mental state, his passing had a significant impact on my vision and dedication to obtaining a degree. This caused frequent visits to the state-run "receiving" facilities that required patients to stay a minimum of 72 hours. My college studies fell incredibly behind during the Fall/Spring 2017 semester, and I later dropped out. I believe my grades for these semesters reflect the emotional hardship I experienced during this period. Having reenrolled in Miami Dade College for the spring term of 2025 at the age of 25, I am proud to say that my dedication to succeed is at an all-time high. Throughout spring, I maintained an A grade level in all four courses I took, along with perfect attendance. Due to a lack of financial support, I was only able to afford one of these classes. With an 86% score on my midterm, I scored well in this course. I am returning to school to pursue a career as an elementary school English teacher. From proper spelling to pronunciation and grammar, English is the most important subject for children this age. I have found the path where I can make a difference and educate children from all walks of life. In this letter, I'm asking for a second chance to achieve my goals. Currently, I am undergoing testing for recurrent breast cancer as an online student. All my professors and I communicate about my doctor appointments. As part of my involvement on my campus, I am also enrolled in all mental health programs. Having lacked the knowledge at the beginning of college no longer affects my studies, and I'm ready to succeed, given the right opportunity. Following my re-enrollment into college my grandfather whom I was living and taking care of passed away November 31ST of 2024 and I lost a close friend of 10 years to suicide April 11th, 2025.I am currently working as a substitute teacher for Miami Dade County, navigating my journey through breast cancer with determination and hope. This challenging experience has fueled my drive to succeed, and I have been enrolling in classes each semester, maintaining high grades and perfect attendance, all while facing uncertainty about my financial aid status. My greatest dream is to create a brighter future for myself and to inspire the children I teach to do the same. I refuse to let my past struggles define me; instead, I want to be a source of positivity and encouragement for others. I am immensely proud of my dedication to my goals, which has never been stronger.
