I read books daily.

I read books daily.
I loved libraries and school. I loved college. But early on I slid into a pit of addiction I didn’t know how to escape. I gave up, dropped out. Became a comedian. Instead of wrestling with my demons, I partied with them. Except I didn’t think I’d get pregnant. I didn’t think I’d fall in love. Catapulted into sobriety, everyone expected me to quit comedy, but I continued performing. I recorded my comedy album. I went on a West Coast mini tour. Then: 2020. No more comedy, not with a toddler and elder at home. So, isolation. I looked for ways to enrich my child’s life now we couldn’t go to the library. I started having flashbacks. I relapsed. I hated the world, hated me more than ever before. I wanted to peel off that poisonous, insatiable need for comfort. I wanted to go back to sober. I clawed my way towards my goal. I was gonna quit out of spite. Then, surprise! Pregnant again. No more spite, just love. Already sober, I went to treatment. Needed tools in my belt to defeat the relapse. Needed to let go of anger at myself for not using the tools I didn’t have in the past. My baby left the hospital as my partner went in. Needed surgery. Couldn’t even hold our baby—doctor’s orders. I got a new job to support everyone. It was barely enough. It wasn’t enough. Kept working. Kept going to therapy. Kept doing dishes. The eldest was expelled. I homeschooled him. I looked for a new job I could keep everyone fed and housed and cared for with. There weren’t any. We spend most our time at the library again. I find myself wondering maybe I could work at a library, someday.
