Being a first-generation student means more to me than being the first person in my family to pursue a graduate degree. It means having the courage to pursue a path that no one in my family had taken before, and learning how to navigate that path without a roadmap. I grew up in Peru with ambitious dreams, but I did not grow up surrounded by people who could explain how to build an international career or earn a graduate degree in the United States. I had to learn by asking questions, seeking mentors, making mistakes, and trying again. Leaving Peru to pursue my MBA at Carnegie Mellon University has been one of the biggest challenges and accomplishments of my life. Every step has required determination: adapting to a new country and academic environment, balancing financial responsibilities, and continuing to believe in my goals even when the path felt uncertain. My journey has taught me that obstacles do not have to define what is possible. Before business school, I built my career in product management in Peru, taking on increasing responsibilities and learning how to turn complex problems into opportunities. At Carnegie Mellon, I have continued pushing myself to grow at the intersection of technology, AI, strategy, and product innovation. My dream is to become a technology leader who creates products that make people's lives better and eventually lead organizations as a Chief Product Officer. But my ambitions are not only about my own success. I want my journey to create opportunities for others who, like me, may not have had a clear path to follow. Before business school, I founded an organization that provided English scholarships and mentorship to students in an underserved community in Peru. That experience showed me how one opportunity can change the trajectory of someone's life. It also made me realize that success has greater meaning when it creates opportunities for others. This scholarship would help me continue that journey by reducing the financial burden of pursuing my MBA and allowing me to focus more fully on my education, professional development, and long-term goals. More importantly, it would be an investment in someone who understands the value of opportunity because I have had to fight for many of mine. Being first-generation has taught me to be resourceful, persistent, and unafraid to build my own path. I may not have inherited a roadmap, but I have learned how to create one, and I hope that one day, I can leave a clearer path for those who come after me.

I am an MBA student at Carnegie Mellon University Tepper School of Business and a former Product Manager from Peru with a passion for leveraging technology, data, and innovation to solve complex business challenges. Before coming to the United States, I spent more than six years at Interbank, where I led the development of digital and AI-powered financial products that improved customer experiences and expanded access to financial services. These experiences inspired my goal of becoming a business leader who uses technology to drive both economic growth and social impact. One of the most significant obstacles I have overcome was growing up in a developing country where access to global educational and professional opportunities was often limited. While pursuing my undergraduate studies and building my career, I had to compete for opportunities in highly competitive environments while navigating resource constraints and limited exposure to international business networks. As a first-generation professional in many of the spaces I entered, I learned to be resilient, adaptable, and proactive in creating opportunities for myself. Through hard work and perseverance, I graduated near the top of my class, earned leadership roles at one of Peru’s largest banks, and secured admission to a top MBA program in the United States. Another challenge was balancing my professional ambitions with my commitment to giving back to my community. Recognizing that many young people in underserved areas lacked access to educational opportunities, I founded “Sonrisas Pachacutec,” a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships, mentoring, and educational support to students and entrepreneurs in Peru. Building and sustaining this initiative while managing a demanding career taught me the importance of leadership, collaboration, and service. Studying in the United States is allowing me to expand my knowledge, develop a global perspective, and gain exposure to cutting-edge technologies that are transforming industries. Through my MBA, particularly my focus on strategy, artificial intelligence, and business technology, I am building the skills needed to lead organizations through digital transformation and create innovative solutions that address real-world problems. My long-term goal is to use these skills to improve financial inclusion and economic opportunity in Latin America. Millions of individuals and small businesses still face barriers to accessing financial products, credit, and digital services. By combining advanced business education with my experience in product management and technology, I hope to develop solutions that make financial services more accessible, affordable, and personalized for underserved populations. Ultimately, I believe education creates a responsibility to serve others. The knowledge and experiences I gain in the United States will enable me to create meaningful impact not only within organizations but also within communities that can benefit from greater access to opportunity. Through innovation, leadership, and a commitment to social responsibility, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable future.

Higher education will be a critical catalyst in helping me achieve my long-term goal of becoming a business leader who leverages technology and artificial intelligence to drive innovation, growth, and social impact. Through my MBA at Carnegie Mellon University Tepper School of Business, I am gaining the strategic, analytical, and leadership skills necessary to navigate an increasingly technology-driven business landscape. Before pursuing my MBA, I spent more than six years at Interbank, one of Peru’s leading retail banks, where I advanced from Product Analyst to Product Manager. In these roles, I led cross-functional teams, launched digital and AI-powered products, and developed growth strategies that generated significant revenue and market share gains. These experiences taught me the importance of combining customer insights, data analysis, and business strategy to create meaningful value. However, they also highlighted the limitations of relying solely on professional experience in a rapidly evolving global economy. To lead larger organizations and drive transformational initiatives, I recognized the need for advanced business education. My MBA is helping me build that foundation by deepening my understanding of strategy, business technologies, and AI applications. Through coursework, collaborative projects, and engagement with diverse classmates from around the world, I am learning how to evaluate complex business challenges from multiple perspectives and make informed decisions in uncertain environments. The program is also strengthening my leadership capabilities by exposing me to different industries, management approaches, and innovative business models. Higher education is also expanding my global perspective. As an international student from Peru studying in the United States, I have the opportunity to learn from world-class faculty and collaborate with peers who bring unique experiences and viewpoints. This exposure is preparing me to lead diverse teams, work across cultures, and identify opportunities in global markets. In an increasingly interconnected world, these skills are essential for business leaders seeking to create sustainable competitive advantages. Beyond professional advancement, higher education will help me amplify my impact on society. I am passionate about using technology and business innovation to improve financial inclusion and economic opportunities, particularly in underserved communities. Through my experience founding a nonprofit organization in Peru that provides scholarships and mentoring, I have seen how access to education and opportunity can transform lives. My MBA equips me with the knowledge, network, and resources needed to scale initiatives that create both business value and positive social outcomes. Ultimately, higher education is not simply a credential for me; it is an investment in my ability to lead, innovate, and make a meaningful contribution to the business world. By combining my professional experience with advanced business education, I will be better prepared to build technology-driven solutions, lead organizations through change, and create lasting impact for customers, communities, and future generations.
