Bio

A person who is very dedicated and passionate about the improvement of oneself and those around her is how I would describe myself. My aspiration in life is to always be my better self. There are so many different experiences that inspire growth and this has always been my priority. I try my best to put myself out there by getting involved in new environments that are of interest to me. Joining the speech team from 7th grade to present has been one of the best decisions I have made. Being able to personify the persona of characters through poetry as well as connect with those of similar interest has been nothing short of immense happiness. There is nothing better than volunteering in different community outreach programs. Setting aside time in dedication to helping others is often overlooked. A small act of appreciation and acceptance goes a long way in helping others feel worthy and cared for. I am also involved in 4H, Track and Field (Varsity Athlete), Mock Trials, Future Business Leaders of America, Black Student Union, STEM Club, and Youth and Government. Some leadership positions that I have acquired: 4H Leadership Team, Freshman Mentor, Student councilor, and Senior Class Board. Collectively, these are all the experiences and activities that have contributed to my overall development and growth as an individual.

It goes without saying that the issue of creating more diverse and inclusive communities is one of the most important issues facing us today. In order to cultivate the community we all desire and hope for, we should advertise that essence of our community. Diversity is the inclusion of everyone despite personal biases. Accepting everyone regardless of race, social status, gender, sex, ethnicity, or any other aspect that might be considered indifferent. After several researches and communicating with my mom, I have come up with the three A’s in having a very diverse community. Awareness, Acceptance and Accomodation. This brings us to the first step, Awareness. Being aware is a larger topic that includes education. Perhaps, the lack of education on these topics is what affects society and causes ignorance. Seeking education from liable resources is key. A good way to bring awareness is ensuring that these resources are more accessible to the public. Luckily, there are numerous ways to ensure this. A good way to start is by hiring a diversity agent in different communities to ensure fairness and equity to all the members. Awareness can be viewed in many ways, but simply just being educated and making an effort to learn about those in your community is a primary step in the overall goal. Next, there is acceptance. Accepting those of different backgrounds, races and sexual orientations equates to appreciation. Once the issue of being aware is out the window, it is much easier to accept. Accepting that despite their differences they are worthy of everything and that they are no less human. Their way of navigating the world might be different but with awareness and appreciation, we can grow to accept these differences and collectively create a safe space for those who are longing for that. Accepting is not a huge gesture, it is just letting others know that they are heard and appreciated in every circumstance- doing this means the world to them. To piece it all together, the last ingredient is Accommodation. Are you able to accommodate diverse groups? What resources would you provide for these individuals? Are you willing to follow up in ensuring that their voices/needs are being heard/met? These are some questions to be asked when developing a diverse community. As accommodation is mostly the largest step, it takes a lot of thought and outreach to ensure that the community feels represented. Understanding the needs of the community and working together to come up with ideas to fulfill these needs are important. Having a safe place that individuals can represent themselves and what they stand for is important. Respect is important. Mainly, ensuring the improvement of resources offered for those of diverse backgrounds is important. This action will result in individual and community morality which will overall equate to effectiveness in communities. In brief, creating a truly diverse and equitable community is a continued learning process. However, being aware, accepting differences and accommodating diversity are smaller steps in achieving the big goal.
