I remembered Philippians 4:6: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” It struck me that I hadn't considered involving God in this process. That night, I thanked the Lord for the accident because it led to the discovery of the tumor. I also prayed for a safe vehicle for my son and me. I stumbled upon a vehicle in excellent condition with remarkably low mileage, which seemed too good to be true. I called to inquire about it. Given my past experiences with the other dealerships, it was important to me that we agree about the price if everything checked out and I decided to purchase it. The vehicle was listed at $13,999. I asked if he would accept $7,000. He then asked to put me on hold to discuss this with his manager. Upon returning, he asked why I was interested in purchasing the vehicle. I researched and learned that according to the National Institute of Mental Health in 2021, there were an estimated 57.8 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States with a mental health illness. This number represented 22.8% of all U.S. adults. Learning that I wasn’t alone in my battles, I encouraged myself to engage my primary care doctor for help. The roles I occupy keep me busy and time management is essential. In addition to being a graduate student, I work full-time, and I’m a single mom to a very energetic 4-year-old boy. My self-care routine includes caring for my mental health, I build in time for exercise, meditating, and take daily medications. There are days when my battles debilitate me, and daily routines can feel heavy like a huge task such as climbing up a mountain. As a single mom with limited resources and no help from family, I learned that I need to plan for the not so good days. I have simple meals that can be made without much effort, activities my son can reach to entertain himself. I had to learn to give myself grace and accept that my best may look different on the hard days. Unfortunately, there continues to be a stigma about mental illness and as I come across others that experience this, I meet them with encouragement. I’m able to share with them ways to have compassion and give themselves grace. Research shows that many people—even some trained medical and mental health professionals—hold negative beliefs that contribute to the stigma around mental illness and mental health. In contrast to the public’s more sympathetic attitudes toward physical health conditions, people often perceive those with mental health conditions to be in control of their illness, responsible for causing it, and undeserving of help. I continue to have hope and understand that prioritizing my self-care includes understanding that everyone may not be gentle with me as I navigate the hard days. I don’t have support from my family, so I don’t share what those days are like. I’ve learned to be my own support system and plan accordingly on the good days. This helped me developed resilience, cope with change but most importantly find meaning in difficult experiences. I work hard to focus on positive thoughts, identify stressors, and if necessary, I allow myself to take mental breaks.

Managing a household, taking care of little people, working a full-time job, and enrolling in school in hopes of a better future. The day-to-day of the endless tasks that fall under each of those roles a single mom needs to occupy can be overwhelming. I have a 4-year-old son. What a blessing he is to me, especially because I never thought I would be able to have a child of my own according to doctors. Through modern medicine, my dream became a reality. He's here. I was married, my husband was abusive, and I found myself being a married single mom. I was afraid to do it on my own. I got tired and overwhelmed, decided to put my son and myself first and made a bold move to provide a healthy environment for my son and me. I bear the overwhelming responsibilities of being a single mom. It's challenging but I find that self-care is necessary. I have to find time to reset myself when life gets overwhelming. I'm intentional about planning my self-care moments. I had to learn to be intentional because if not, I was in a cycle where I would put it off. It clicked for me when I was on an airplane with Charlie. The flight attendant was doing the emergency routine of where to find life vests and demonstrating how to click your seat belt together. It's a rule that you need to put your oxygen mask on before you assist another one, even if it's a child. I had to envision this. If I put his mask on first, I could run out of oxygen and kill us both. What a scary thought but I had to embrace that analogy and apply it to my life. I need to take care of Charlie's mommy so she can be the best version of herself, for her and Charlie. So as I practice my self-care, which gives me the boost I need to keep running this race I make sure to schedule it. Yes! like, pencil it in like an actual appointment on my phone or use my calendar. I try to find something I would enjoy treating myself to each week. As funds are often stretched as a single mom, I try to find coupons, seek free events, or even plan a spa night, those are my favorite. So if I need quiet time to myself, I like to spend time in nature, I love to walk, it helps me listen to my thoughts and calm my mind. Nature walks remind me to be present at the moment and take in the beautiful scenery. There are times that I want to be social and I will plan a lunch with a girlfriend or even a phone call to catch up. I also enjoy a good old fashion movie night. I will pair it with one of my favorite meals. These small resets keep me going. I feel rested and reminded I'm as I take time for myself, it's ok. I don't have to feel guilty or ashamed. I've learned to listen to my body, it will tell me when I need to rest. I've learned to listen and respond accordingly.

When I imagined living the life of my dreams Les Brown came to my mind. He said, “Most people have done all that they’re ever going to do – they raise a family, they earn a living, and then they die.” That’s what we’re supposed to do, right? Wrong! Life is made for greater things, …" Life is made for greater things! I'm doing my best to be a living example of my ancestors' wildest dream. Lack of access to financial freedom is stamped in Black history as they weren't given an equal playing field to participate in the American Dream. Our culture is behind in having earned equitable assets to pass along to address generational wealth. We're starting from scratch. Living my dream for me is about giving back and leaving a legacy in the community for others to have a hand up and not down. Once I complete this Organizational Leadership program there is a call and duty to educate those who want to learn and create strategies to supply our youth, our families, and our future with opportunities for generational wealth. My first meaningful career was in the role of a financial and credit counselor at HUD Certified Credit Counseling Agency. I worked in partnership with community agencies to bring services and financial literacy education to poverty-stricken communities. This was the most rewarding work I've ever done. My dream is to cultivate an organization that will provide mission-driven work to reduce poverty and infuse the community with financial literacy education. I was disappointed with the mismanagement of the organization on a leadership level and watched it dissolve. I'm studying organizational leadership, pairing it with my financial literacy background and want to steward a non-profit organization effectively to ensure the mission is obvious in our work. Why is this my dream? It's an opportunity to start something that I know I won't be around to finish but to pass along the torch to keep the work going. I see this as planting a tree from a seed. Finding the right spot to plant the seed, and taking care of it, so it can grow, but as time goes on, I may not be around to see that tree grow to its full potential but I will rest assured upon the law of succession. That the next leaders coming behind, will be able to continue to nurture the tree and see its growth through.

Golf saved me at a pivotal point in my life. When I was a teenager, I wanted to be an attorney. My father in support of my future career goals, was adamant that I learn how to play golf. The time my father spent with me was so valuable as he passed down his passion for this sport. He enrolled me in a golf clinic to improve my technique. The pivotal point where golf was all I had to lean on was when my parents announced they were getting a divorce. My world crashed; the definition of family was a confusing concept for me. I’m the only child, with limited support, and nobody to talk to. I was embarrassed to share this news with my friends at school. I felt ashamed, confused, and lost. I no longer felt grounded, I felt abandoned to sort through my feelings and emotions on my own. When emotions were too heavy, I would play golf, I learned that it fueled me in a way that I could keep going another day. What happened to me, fueled a passion that I was able to continue to practice and see the impact of the time I spent practicing, I improved my swing. Golf gave me my juice, I would get out there and do it for nothing, do it on a bad day, and do it when I needed to clear my mind. The beauty of golf is that you’re also outside in nature. Nature has a way of bringing about feelings of calmness. Golf enforced a temporary time out for me to be still in a way that helped me get my mind off my reality. I was reminded that there is a larger plan for me to make a difference in the world. As time went on, I continued to practice and focus on the sport of golf, it changed the meaning of my life and how I saw myself. I knew that if I didn’t practice my swing and craft of golf, it would show on the course. The more I practiced, my confidence increased, my techniques improved, and the outcome was a better score. I took charge of my destiny, applying this to life. Am I practicing my daily affirmations, am I taking care of myself, am I being a good steward of my time that reflects the values I uphold? Golf slowed me down, gave me a necessary pause, and challenged me to think about these things. What is the next best move for me? There is power in intention and the energy of intention is what determines your life. I make it a habit to check in with myself and ask this. You can make good grades and that is applaudable, but it can become numb or routine, a feeling that you’re supposed to make those grades. However, the pleasure for me in golf was the more I practiced, I saw my game improve. That was a satisfying mixture of therapeutic success that I was unaware that I needed to experience. This was the beginning of understanding that a terrible human experience doesn’t define the person I am. I can make improvements through shaping and defining myself to ultimately create the life I want to have. If I had a not-so-favorable golf day, tomorrow was a new day to get back out there and improve yesterday's score. I connected the dots and realized it works that way every day. Tomorrow is a new day to start over if today didn’t go as well as planned.

I wasn't aware that I was struggling with mental health issues until my early to mid 20's. There were times during my teenage years that I would share with my mom that I was feeling depressed and unfortunately, she wasn't a nurturing parent but would shew me away and insist I didn't have any reasons to be depressed. I learned toxic ways to cope with my mental health issues. I didn't appear to be depressed. I made good grades in school and didn't have to study as much but when my grades were excellent, it was because I was using school as a way to channel my attention to it so I didn't have to face what was going on. When I finished school and graduated, I struggled even more because my distraction was gone, how was I to cope? I didn't want to be social, I stopped going to the gym, and I was always sleeping. When I shared with my doctor about my concerns it was because I was so lethargic and felt that I should have more energy in my 20's. That's when I learned the word depression. I was confused. I wasn't walking around crying like those people were in the commercials. He gave me a prescription to "try". I was skeptical but I committed to seeing it through and paid attention to my moods and was mindful of changes. Within a week I noticed that I was feeling my best! I was able to get rest and feel rested, I was focused at work, not as moody, and didn't feel unmotivated to be social. I was performing at my best. I felt good, I was happy. I made the mistake and thought I was cured. I forgot to take my medicine because I was feeling good. I went back into a spiral where I was where I started. I went back to the doctor to tell him the medication worked but then I stopped taking it and have regressed. This is when I learned this wasn't a one time take pill and you're fixed situation. I struggled with accepting my reality because of the stigma attached to having a mental illness. I had to learn not to be ashamed. Once I realized that I was free to speak about this and share with others how I need to take care of my mental health and prioritize this in my life because that's what works best for me. I immediately felt freer and less ashamed. I thought about the word that follows "mental", the term "illness". Cancer patients have an illness and we empathize with them. I had to learn to embrace myself the same way but abandon how society relates to and defines the word "mental illness". I had to learn that my mental health needs to be cared for differently than someone who may not be struggling with a mental illness. My mental illness isn't allowed to define who I am. But my mental health is a priority because I have to manage it through medication, meditation, and self-care to keep it healthy and to perform at my best. It took me over 10 years to embrace myself and treat myself with kindness. I seek ways to reach out to those struggling with mental illness to do the same and take it one day at a time. I also share with those who may get impatient or judge someone struggling that they didn't pick for this to happen to them but they could be doing their best and their best is good enough.

David Satcher, medical doctor and public health administrator who was also the 16th surgeon general of the United States(1998–2002), best describes why I believe my mental health is important. He said, "There is no health without mental health". My mental health is a part of my well-being. The state of my mental health determines how I operate psychologically, emotionally, and socially. My mental health greatly correlates with my personal feeling about myself. Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy by being hyper-critical of ourselves. Negative beliefs and thoughts about ourselves can cause us to self-sabotage and hold us back from a productive day or ultimately achieving our dreams. There are times I don't feel confident about myself and those are the moments I recite words of affirmation in the mirror and throughout the day. Over time this has helped me decrease negative self-talk and increase positive thinking. I'm very demanding of myself and I make mistakes but I know that doesn't mean I'm a failure. The positive affirmations help me strengthen my resiliency to setbacks and bounce back when things go wrong. The state of my mental health affects the quality of my life. Life is unpredictable and based on our experiences of what happens to us or around us, our environment, a key indicator of our response is based upon how healthy our mind is. Prioritizing my wellness routine helps me be more emotionally and mentally resilient. I'm able to flourish in various aspects of my life and persevere through difficult times. When psychological wellness is affected, it can cause negative behaviors that may not only affect personal health but also compromise relationships with others. When I'm experiencing emotional distress it's challenging for me to show up for people I care about. I tend to retreat and prefer to be alone to carry the weight of my emotions myself. My coping skill for this kind of challenge is to reach out for talk therapy and rely on the guidance of a professional. Therapy has taught me healthier ways to interact with others and copying mechanisms to practice during difficult times. Mental wellness is important at every stage of life from childhood, adolescence, through adulthood and especially as we age. To keep my mental health in shape I prioritize rest and sleep, exercise regularly, meditate, and maintain a positive outlook on life. This helps me manage the stressors of my daily life as a student, single mom, and employee. I'm intentional about my 4-year-old son learning techniques for his mental health. We read age-appropriate books about self-care and have conversations about the importance of eating healthy, exercising, and getting rest. He also has affirmations he enjoys reciting.

It's an instinct for me to embody selflessness, as someone who has a deep sense of empathy, I have an active awareness of the needs of others and a willingness to put myself in someone else's shoes. I genuinely desire to help others and I understand the impact this can make in someone's life. It's more than doing a good deed, the smallest gesture of kindness can have a tremendous impact on someone who is struggling. In college, I participated in a research project on the homeless population. We were given a list of questions to ask them and in return for their participation, they received a hot meal. One of the questions asked, "How did you become homeless?". An unforgettable participant shared his personal story, he has a college degree, had a great career and was married. His wife was diagnosed with cancer. He lost his job taking care of her, ran through their assets paying for treatment, his wife lost the battle and he lost everything. I will never forget his story, it stood out among a sea of stories but it was relatable, this can happen to anyone. Cancer and financial crisis do not discriminate and many times families can end up in a financial crisis due to health reasons. I was compelled to continue volunteering at the homeless shelter without knowing I would develop a passion to start a career in social services. My first job out of college was as a case manager with the housing authority. I was tasked with helping public housing residents become homeowners the comedy in this is I had no clue how to purchase a home, I was still in an apartment but I had to heart to educate and help my clients figure it out. It was a blessing to have the internet because I came home daily to research the process, I was active in connecting with banks and community resources to learn more, and as a result, I was able to help nine families reach homeownership within one year. I love anonymously doing small acts of kindness. They're fun and I often wonder the difference I made or how the person's day was going before they experienced the act of kindness. One of my favorite gestures starts at a drive-thru window, paying for someone's coffee behind me. I enjoy this one because as we get in a rut of life, it can cause someone to pause for a moment of gratitude which can shift their day if it wasn't going well. Not to mention, it can be a fun pay-it-forward chain event throughout the day. Once a month I purchase snacks and supplies, and I have a couple of girlfriends help out to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and pack them in brown paper bags and pass them out to the homeless. Inside the bagged lunch we also include a short note or scripture on an index card for encouragement. We've been doing this for a few years now and the recipients of the lunches shared with us how they look forward to their notes, so it's nice to know that means a lot to them. I enjoy donating my old professional wardrobe to the local women's center. They have a career closet on-site and women can come and shop there to get an outfit for a job interview or get a few starter outfits for new employment. Some of the women could be escaping domestic violence, starting anew after incarceration, or may have hit hard times.

This is a great message that puts in perspective how important our health is and should be prioritized. How can we manage the day-to-day without our health and be effective in our daily lives? My wellness is a top priority because if I unintentionally neglect it, I feel worse physically and I have a child that depends on me. I'm intentional about practicing healthy wellness habits daily so I can feel my best. Over time as this lifestyle continues it will be instrumental to prevent or control health problems. I did not value the importance of managing my wellness until I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in my late 20's. The flare-ups were mild because I exercised a lot and ate fairly healthily. However, as I've gotten older they've gotten worse. I saw a documentary on how diet (good and bad) plays a role in our health and I was empowered to start a vegan diet. It wasn't difficult to stay the course and not return to my previous eating habits because I felt so better in a variety of ways and saw immediate improvements in my medical tests. After a few months of practicing diet, I had fewer RA flare-ups. My doctor scheduled a bloodwork appointment and we were able to see the results of practicing a clean diet. I tested below the numbers for an RA diagnosis, so it had disappeared. I was flabbergasted that my diet had that kind of result. I also suffered from daily sinus headaches and received weekly allergy shots. I was unaware the headaches were happening because I had food allergies. So by practicing the vegan diet, I eliminated dairy, which was causing the headaches. Healthy eating is not only vital for me to properly manage my health and be effective daily but my mental health improved. I was suffering from daily fatigue, brain fog, and poor attention span. When I made the shift, I had more energy to include a weekly workout regime and lost 35 lbs. I had less brain fog and was able to think with clarity and focus better at work and in school. I appreciated the improvements in physical and mental health especially as a mom because I need my energy to keep up with my active 4-year-old son. I recognize that maintaining proper wellness techniques is key to helping me succeed as a student. I use a calendar to keep track of my assignments, schedule study time, and schedule time for exercise. I'm a nontraditional college student. I work full-time and I'm a single mom so I must be healthy physically and mentally to be able to balance my schedule. If I'm not taking care of my wellness I'm more susceptible to getting sick. If I get sick I have to take time off from work and still manage to care for my son. Given all my responsibilities exercising is vital to me and helpful in managing stress as a student, mom, and employee. I'm intentional about managing my wellness and as a result, I'm able to be effective as a mom, at work, and excel as a student because I feel my best.

I'm most excited about connecting with classmates in my cohort. During my undergraduate years, my classmates and I were very close. We were assigned numerous group projects but we enjoyed working together, we studied for exams together and helped each other understand the materials. In addition to connecting with classmates, I need to continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle to perform at my absolute best academically, professionally, and personally. I believe I'm uniquely deserving of this award because I'm a dedicated public servant but also because of my perspective and adopted definition of the words "success" and "excellence" that I live by. This is best described in one of my favorite quotes by an unknown author which says "Success isn't just about what you accomplish in your life, it's about what you inspire others to do". When we think of successful people, often our minds jump to those that have achieved great wealth or status such as athletes or entrepreneurs, however, I measure success according to the impact I've had on someone's life. Success can come from helping someone else overcome an obstacle, providing guidance when needed, or being a positive role model for younger generations. After college, I had a rewarding career in the non-profit sector helping single moms achieve self-sufficiency. I've had the opportunity to be a cheerleader, advocate, and resource for families as they worked with me to achieve their goals to purchase a home, going back to school or starting a business. The foundation of my career was built around moving families out of poverty and it was extremely rewarding and humbling. When I share my story about when I started college as a first-generation student and a woman of color attending school full-time but also working full-time to afford it, I find it inspires people to abandon excuses to continue their education. This brings me to share my adopted definition of "excellence" best defined by Aristotle who says "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit". I believe I have been successful academically and professionally because of my consistency in making the right choices. In addition, I never define obstacles as failures because I credit all my successes to my continued optimism and perseverance through life's challenges and storms. This scholarship will help me on my journey to pursue higher education and create a better life for myself, my son, and the community. I'm working on a graduate degree in Organizational Leadership. With my education and experience, I can impact the lives of others and my community. This award is not just going to help me obtain a graduate degree but will be equipping me to educate, coach, and motivate others to speak to their inner leaders to help them overcome challenges or empower them to make decisions that serve the life they want. As a first-generation student, a survivor of an abusive marriage, a woman of color, and a single mom I want to use my testimonies from challenges I've overcome to empower others to do the same in their lives. I view this scholarship as an investment in sewing a seed that will become fruitful and multiply. In the future, I hope to be able to give back to this fund to help other women create a better life for themself and multiply the efforts of this scholarship's intended purpose.

Domestic violence made a permanent imprint on the person I am today. I survived a short-term marriage to a narcissist that was fluent in verbal and emotional abuse. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I could do better all while his words and actions slowly began to dim my light. We dated and married in such a short period that there wasn’t enough time to see patterns of toxic behavior. Two years in and with a newborn in my arms, I began to wonder who I married and what I have gotten myself into. I was a married single mom. My best friend is a licensed MHC and I’m comfortable talking to her about personal matters, I know she will keep it confidential and give unbiased advice. She kept encouraging me to research narcissism and I did but only on a surface level. After 2 years in this toxic marriage and hours of Youtube videos learning more about this word, my mind was blown. How did I fall for such a person? I studied this in college, in a course called Violence and Abuse, we learned about the cycle of abuse. How did I end up in one? He promised me dreams but delivered nightmares. I’m in the process of a divorce and I joined a divorce care support group to help encourage me through this journey. This experience has birthed a passion in me to raise awareness about domestic violence, support the victims and survivors, and help fund the cause. To educate myself and raise awareness, I keep abreast of the current literature and educational podcasts regarding domestic violence. It's paramount to stay up to date because as literature and awareness about domestic violence grows, abusers may shift how they present themselves to remain hidden. I became a member of a local domestic violence support group when I needed support to navigate my tumultuous marriage. I'm still engaged with the group in a supportive role for victims and survivors. When I have opportunities for speaking engagements or if the opportunity presents itself I share my story as it establishes rapport and trust. I also take a moment to listen to others share their stories. I meet the survivors and victims where they are. I've been an emotional support system for victims who needed to leave the relationship safely and I would refer them to local resources that could help with a safety exit plan. I've made an impact in the lives of others that have experienced domestic violence through support groups, increasing awareness to recognize characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships, and encouraging the use of community resources. My voice is a powerful tool because I use it to share my story and eliminate feelings of shame, feeling alone, or embarrassment. Once those barriers are broken it's easier for someone experiencing this to feel empowered to take action to end the cycle. For the last 15 years, I've committed myself to the non-profit industry. I've had the most rewarding career helping individuals and families improve their lives and accomplish their personal goals. I've always had a heart for helping others see the best in themselves and domestic violence victims and survivors are near and dear to my heart. I find it rewarding to be a part of the journey as they transform from victim to survivor and thrive, it's a beautiful transformation of healing. On a larger scale, I believe my greatest impact on these individuals is through volunteering my grant writing skills to assist local non-profits to increase funding for domestic violence victims.

I'm intentional about managing my wellness and as a result, I'm able to be effective as a mom, at work, and excel as a student because I feel my best

The last 15 years of my career were dedicated to the public service field. I've had the opportunity to be a part of an anti-poverty program where the goal was to get 1000 people of out poverty in 1000 days. I had a small caseload of families that I worked with to increase their financial, human, and social assets. This initiative was a community effort that included local non-profits and city government officials. The program was successful, we were able to publish a case study of the findings. I've worked with Habitat for Humanity as a Family Services Manager. It was a rewarding position and I got to work with families to improve their credit and finances to be able to purchase a home. After my tenure there I started a position in city government managing a federal grant portfolio, the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), from the U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development. I was proud to oversee a team of project managers that worked closely with community non-profits to fund programs such as the Boys and Girls Club, Girl Scouts, and local homeless shelters. In 2021 I was selected for a professional development opportunity to attend a Leadership Academy. It was a year-long series of workshops, reading assignments, and writing research papers. I enjoyed studying the best practices and components of leadership by John C. Maxwell and Patrick Lencioni. We also studied employing leadership among different generations and learned what motivates a Baby Boomer from a Gen Z or Millennial. I was inspired to learn about the dynamics of leadership that I've decided to return to college to earn a graduate degree in Organizational Leadership. I'm interested in exploring opportunities as a life coach, leadership consultant, and possibly teaching workshops or college courses. I'm also interested in exploring the idea of becoming a Chief Executive Officer of a Nonprofit Organization since I have the technical knowledge but build my leadership skills for effectiveness. There are a variety of niches within the career field of a life coach, I'd like to offer new insight into challenges and zero in on negative patterns that could be standing in the way of success. I believe given our new normal of remote work and virtual meetings that we need to look at approaches to leading in a virtual work environment. Leadership development matters so much because the actions and attitudes of leaders drive performance in several ways: improving employee engagement, enhancing productivity and cultivating an innovative and inclusive business culture. I'd like to see businesses thrive and for their greatest resources, their employees, to feel supported and inspired as well. I hope to leave a legacy in the leadership industry and have a great collection of work yielding footprints of best practices and reinforcing new ways of working that will drive strong results. I want to continue the theme of making a difference in the life of others through coaching and motivating individuals. I believe my calling is to help people and it's an honor to work in partnership with individuals to help them reach their maximum potential across all facets of life. I feel most fulfilled when I know I'm making an impact in an individual's life especially helping them to be a better version of themselves.

My dream version of my future self is to be a secret (unnamed) philanthropist.

When I started college as a first-generation student and woman of color I worked full-time and attended school full time to afford it. After college, I had a rewarding career in the non-profit sector helping single moms achieve self-sufficiency. I've had the opportunity to be a cheerleader, advocate, and resource for families as they worked with me to achieve their goals to purchase a home, go back to school or start a business. The foundation of my career was built around moving families out of poverty and it was extremely rewarding and humbling. I was nominated for a professional development opportunity to attend a leadership academy. It was a year-long series of workshops to help cultivate leadership through best practices and studying historical scenarios of best and poor practices. It was during this academy that I became passionate about servant leadership. It was also during this academy that I had to self-talk and depend on myself for empowerment to leave an abusive marriage. I was afraid to be a single mom and raise my son by myself. When I realized that although I lived with my husband, I was pretty much a married single mom already doing everything on my own, the fear departed from me and I safely left. When I left the marriage and was in a safe living environment, I didn't know there would be more obstacles to overcome that I didn't have going into the marriage. I'd experienced such levels of emotional and verbal abuse that I was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety. I was having anxiety attacks from triggers that weren't always negative so I couldn't see them coming. As I continued to heal, build myself up, and navigate a divorce, I still had to be a very present mom with no family or emotional support. When I take a moment to pause and look back over my life I realize that I've overcome so many challenges. I had to undergo IVF to conceive my son and I was happy when it worked especially when the doctors told me it wasn't possible. Today, I'm a single mom of a very active 4-year-old son. I'm grateful for the journey of motherhood although I purposely waited until marriage and never intended to do this alone. Some days aren't easy but I know I can do it. I learned that my best can be measured differently each day and as long as I show up for him as his mom, that's all that matters. This scholarship would help me create a better life for myself, my son, and the community. I'm working on a graduate degree in Organizational Leadership. I believe in educating, advocating, and motivating women to speak to their inner leaders to help them overcome challenges or empower them to make decisions that serve the life they want. As a first-generation student, a survivor of an abusive marriage, a woman of color, and a single mom I want to use my testimonies from challenges I've overcome to empower others to do the same in their lives. I view this scholarship as an investment in sewing a seed that will become fruitful and multiply. In the future, I hope to be able to give back to this fund to help other women create a better life for themself and multiply the efforts of this scholarship's intended purpose.

It was Steven Adler that said, "You can have all the riches and success in the world, but if you don't have your health, you have nothing". This is a great message that puts in perspective how important our health is and should be prioritized. How can we manage the day-to-day without our health and be effective? It's important to adopt healthy eating habits to function at our maximum potential each day. Over time as this lifestyle continues it will be instrumental to prevent or control health problems. I did not value the importance of healthy eating until I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in my late 20's. The flare-ups were mild because I exercised a lot and ate fairly healthily. However, as I've gotten older they've gotten worse. I watched a documentary on how diet (good and bad) plays a role in our health. I was empowered to start a vegan diet. It wasn't difficult to stay the course and not return to my previous eating habits because I felt so better in a variety of ways and saw immediate improvements in medical tests. After a few months of practicing the vegan diet, I had fewer RA flare-ups. My doctor scheduled a bloodwork appointment so we were able to see the results of practicing a clean diet. I tested below the numbers for an RA diagnosis, so it had disappeared. I was flabbergasted that my diet had that kind of result. I was also suffering from daily sinus headaches and received weekly allergy shots for them. I was unaware the headaches were happening because I had food allergies. So by practicing the vegan diet, I was able to eliminate dairy, which was causing those headaches. Healthy eating is not only vital for me to properly manage my health and be effective daily but my mental health improved. I was suffering from daily fatigue, brain fog, and poor attention span. When I made the shift, I had more energy to include a weekly workout regime and lost 35 lbs. I had less brain fog and was able to think with clarity and focus better at work. I appreciated the improvements to physical and mental health especially after I became a mom because I need my energy to keep up with my very active 4-year-old son. Although I didn't appreciate the benefits of healthy eating habits initially, I do believe without our health we have nothing and I want to ensure my son adopts healthy habits early on. 4-year-olds can be picky eaters so we have a lot of fun making healthy snacks and dinners. He loves dinosaurs and his favorite snack is dinosaur brains with tree branches. This sounds a lot more fun to him than hummus and pretzels. I recognize through daily healthy habits that prioritize and value my and my son's health, that I'm breaking a generational curse for my family. My grandmother and great-grandmother were both diagnosed with diabetes. They both took the diagnosis as a life sentence and failed to manage their health properly. As a result, they both left our family way too soon but I'm empowered and committed to being healthy so I can be around for my son and see my future grandkids.

As I've spent the last few days thinking about this question, what do you find the most challenging about the combination of being a student and a single parent, I'm compelled to share my personal story for the context of my challenge and emerging passion to pave the way for my and my child's future. As a first-generation college student, education was always important to me when I was a child and I've always been passionate to learn new things. When I started college as an undergraduate I worked full-time and went to school full-time. At the age of 22, I purchased my first home. I was excited to get my education goals behind me so I could start a career and enjoy life and at some point, I had plans to get married and have children. I purposely waited until marriage to have a child because being very traditional-minded, I wanted to do things "the right way". I had a great career during the years I was employed in the non-profit sector helping families, especially single mom increase their financial, social, and human assets. Very rewarding work, I got to help them achieve goals of homeownership, increase savings, and even return to school. I met my husband, we dated, got married, and conceived our son through IVF. I never thought I would be a mom because of doctors diagnosis but due to new medical procedures, I was able to make it happen. A couple of years later the marriage didn't work out, we filed for divorce. Today I'm the mom of an active 4-year-old adventurous little boy, his dad isn't very involved in his life especially since he moved out of state. I'm the only child and don't have a large family so one of the challenges is support and the lack thereof. I was afraid to leave my abusive marriage because I was nervous and afraid about the challenges of being a single mom and wasn't confident I could manage. It took a lot of self-talk, determination, and bravery, and I did it. I'm a single mom and enjoying life with my son. In addition to a lack of outside support, there are additional challenges to balancing student and mom life. The challenges of a combination of student and single parent include work-life balance, lack of self-care, and financial burdens. As a single mom, I still have a household to manage while going to school. My son is old enough to help with some of the chores around the house and we tend to do them together. This allows me to teach him responsibility, and spend time with him all while getting the house together. We all have 24 hours in a day and 8 of those hours we need to use to rest. If you work full-time another 8 is for work. That leaves another 8 for school (class and studying), spending time with family, and possibly trying to enjoy yourself or indulge in self-care. Single moms are quick to neglect self-care because after all the daily routines are done there's usually little to no time available for themselves or there's no energy left for the day. I find time at least twice a month to be intentional and schedule some time for myself to enjoy a book, have lunch with a girlfriend, or have a spa night at home. It also gives me something to look forward to especially if I'm having a bad day. The financial burdens that come up for me as a single mom are challenging because our household has one income. I continue to save for emergencies and I'm thankful that as they arise I can meet them. It's been challenging for me this year because my income was cut significantly and I'm managing a load of debt from paying the attorney for the divorce. We live extremely frugally utilizing consignment shops and grocery shopping with coupons. My home is older and does need repairs and maintenance can be expensive because I'm not very handy around the house so I have to hire a handyman for small projects such as replacing a toilet or replacing a garbage disposal. I've decided to go back to school for a graduate degree in Organizational Leadership. I want to be a motivational voice for other single moms to know that there is a leader within and they need to speak to her. For me to earn this scholarship, would be a daily reminder that even though there are many challenges of being a single mom, if you take it one day at a time and give yourself grace, you can overcome them. This scholarship is evidence of recognition that it's hard to balance both roles as a single mom and student and that someone recognizes that and is allowing moms to be a voice and speak to it, we aren't overlooked as this being a challenge but we can make it and I appreciate that. As a single mom, I think it's important to be reminded that our children see us through a different lens than we see ourselves. We need to keep showing up for them and ourselves. This scholarship would help my child's future by giving me the financial resources I need to further my education and additionally continue to provide for him. I'm not foreign to hard work and this scholarship is a tool to purchase the classes I need but I still need to do the hard work in school, manage my time appropriately to accomplish my education goal and continue to invest time in my child. In the future, I plan to donate resources for scholarships to help other moms be able to further their education goals for themselves and their families. This scholarship is an investment in me by planting one seed. I will work to generate a garden in return and increase the return on investment. This is breaking generational curses and providing a means for generational wealth.

It was when I accepted my first leadership position without any formal training or any knowledge of best practices that I realized the gravity of the impact that an effective or ineffective leader has on a team and the organization. I felt overwhelmed as I decided to educate myself on the topic, where do I start? There's a lot of material on the topic and not to mention I felt pressure that I owed it to my team to lead them responsibly. I took a moment to think about the characteristics that I need to be intentional with to ensure my team experiences during interactions with me. I want them to feel heard, and that their ideas matter. I want them to know they're valued and that they are the subject matter experts of their job. Through practicing active listening, and striving to understand and empathize I discovered as problems arose, they felt comfortable reaching out to me for assistance or guidance. As daily interactions and meetings were happening, I discovered a pattern of unfavorable habits among the team that was developed to cope with unpleasant situations. This needed to be addressed, I value a healthy working environment and the best way for me to promote one was to prioritize it. With the support of my colleagues, we created an environment that served the team by providing resources and support such as weekly 1:1 meetings, a mentorship program and provided additional outside resources. As the team continued to feel supported in a healthier working environment, it was also imperative they know I deeply support their personal growth and professional development. Through concrete action, I made sure to allocate funds for professional development. After a few months, the team recognized their leader listens, shows empathy, and cultivates a healthy environment. As a result, a sense of community started to emerge among the team. It was rewarding to witness the team connect as the level of trust and companionship improved. This helped the team grow on an individual level and also shine through in their performance. My most memorable story is of a direct report I met with weekly to review his assignments to ensure timely completion. He felt comfortable sharing with me that he struggles to complete his work because he doesn't like his job. I thanked him for feeling comfortable enough to be frank with me and I immediately empathized and shared with him a similar experience I had. I told him he still needs to be accountable for getting his work done but I support him in finding something he wanted to do. I also encouraged him to think about other roles he may want in the department, we talked through a few and he decided he wasn't interested. I asked him if he thought exercising the tuition assistance program we offered, he later looked into it and enrolled in a master's program. As time went on, he decided to resign but thanked me and asked if I would continue to mentor him. He still refers to me as his "best boss". He shared that he felt supported no matter what but he also knew he had to remain accountable to get his job done. Today he has a job he loves and he finished his degree. Leadership is the virtue of inspiring others to reach their highest level of potential. Through my passion for leadership, I decided to study organizational leadership. In the future, I hope to coach effective leaders, teach best practices, and be a mentor and resource to younger generations.
