Playing football has improved my character in many ways and has influenced how I live my life every day. Football has made me a stronger, more resilient man who, through discipline, respect, and sportsmanship, has allowed me to become part of a unique community. Through discipline, I have been taught that what happens off the field is as important as what happens on the field. I have been taught that my academics are just as important as playing the game. In addition to academics, time management, setting priorities, and accountability have been a cornerstone of my success. These attributes carry over to the field as well. Football has also taught me respect. Respect for my teammates, coaches, officials, and the teams we play against. Respect means acknowledging that every teammate comes from a different life experience and brings different skills and strengths. Respecting coaches means understanding that my coaches are there to teach me about the game and push me to be the best player and human I can be. Respecting the opposing team and understanding that they put in the same amount of work that I have and that we are all warriors on the field but all part of a brotherhood. Sportsmanship and teamwork are one of the most important aspects of football. Football is a team sport where not one player can win the game. Being successful on the field and in life depends on trust, communication, and collaboration. Many times, a football player has to think more about the team than the individual. Whether you win or lose, it has to be done with humility. While football is not everything in life, it is a big piece of mine. It has provided me with skills that I will take with me after my last game is played. It has made me a better all-around athlete, a better teammate, community member, and a better person.
