Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship
I teach the disruptors of the status quo. By that I mean I teach the students who have been told they will not amount to much. They are not smart enough. This knowledge could have come from the projection of state testing, the environment that they currently live in, past trauma, or even the adults in their lives that lead to generational beliefs. However, within my four walls, the expectation is to take risks. These risks will either give you wonderful results that you never thought possible or fail, leading to a learning opportunity that is just as valuable.
I have found that by helping my students to see beyond the possibilities that they believe are possible, I have shown them that the world is open to them being game changers. They can see beyond our community or housing project they currently reside in, to a land of what if. What if you love to draw, so you complete murals of famous individuals? What if you love to design, so you make the next big fashion trend? What if you love Legos, so you become an inventor and you create the next Swiffer? To be honest it does not matter what if, what truly matters is that there is someone who believes that they can reach a potential that they never believed for themselves. If you push and lead them far enough and remind them enough, they will begin to believe it for themselves. True change comes from the mind shift from someone else believing in you, to you believing in yourself. I want them when they leave my classroom know in the deepest part of their soul that they can make a difference in our world and for themselves.
For this reason, I want to go back to school to inspire a building to change not just my room. I want to know to help other teachers reach their students in new ways. This way we will all succeed. We will make a world where students are not afraid to be wrong but use that as a learning experience that will mold them into thinkers. I know that I may not be able to help everyone but there is someone to help that person and by learning new tactics I can hopefully inspire more teachers to reach out to those I can not and we together will change the world.
