The moment I decided on my career path is permanently etched in my memory. In June 2010, my mom was hospitalized with kidney failure and urgently needed dialysis. However, as an undocumented immigrant, she was denied treatment. This experience left me feeling invisible and powerless, but instead of succumbing to despair, I transformed those feelings into determination. From a young age, I resolved to make a difference, which has led me to pursue a career in nursing.
Higher education is a crucial step in achieving my goals. A nursing program will provide the knowledge and practical skills I need to excel in patient care. Clinical experiences will prepare me for real-world challenges, and college will connect me with mentors and peers who will support my growth. These opportunities will help me develop the confidence and expertise necessary to deliver compassionate, equitable care to all patients, particularly those who feel marginalized.
My desire to become a nurse stems directly from my childhood experience. I was my mom’s primary caregiver during her illness, providing comfort and assistance when she needed it most. These experiences gave me a sense of purpose that continues to drive my academic and professional goals. I want to ensure others receive the compassionate and equitable care that my mom was denied.
To prepare for this journey, I have excelled in science courses like biology and anatomy, deepening my understanding of the human body. As president of my school’s Health Club and an active volunteer, I’ve developed essential leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. These experiences have also fostered empathy and resilience, qualities that are vital in healthcare.
Reflecting on my experiences, I’m driven by my commitment to ensuring no one feels invisible in their time of need. With a nursing degree, I plan to turn my purpose into reality by providing the compassionate care that people deserve regardless of their background.
