My name is Christian Geschke, I’m a sophomore at Deerfield Beach High School and apart of the IB program. I loved those moments of looking into the dark yet glowing window on a plane, the landscape of city lights full of life. Seeing how little we really are, or is it how big our creations are? How these planes are able to take off ground to look above us with almost no problem. I’m always so mesmerized by the sheer innovation that humans had to overcome to create such a beautiful form of transportation. The history behind it is what really intrigues me and many others. Aviation really came from a wooden glider to aluminum birds (airline planes are mostly 75% to 80% aluminum). Long story short, aviation as a whole has a very rich history of very famous aircraft, pilots and culture. Why I am passionate about a career in aviation is because I want be apart of that rich history, that rich culture of putting on the metal wings pin and the yellow stripes. A career in aviation is about overcoming the challenges whether being the mental and physical struggle, to the financial struggle. That is what I plan to achieve using this scholarship, to fund my journey to become an airline pilot like lessons.
I live next to a little airport named the Pompano Air Park. I always love seeing the planes and helicopter take off and land from my balcony. I sometimes go over there and look beyond the fence to see what the flight school’s name and the inside of it. The air park even has the good year blimp! Seeing that huge behemoth race across the skies still captivates me on how they were able to create a transportable advertising balloon. I guess I could say the bulk of my experience of aviation had to be in an airline traveling thousands of miles to other locations like Hawaii and Germany. Although I was scared of it as a little kid, as any else would be too. I got more attuned to it and I started to love sitting next to window, not only to admire the land from above but also the plane itself. Seeing the light blink and how the wing uses its mechanics to catch air to slow itself down when flying. Another great experience was how I got to play a flight simulator during my 8th grade school year. I took off on many different planes ranging from the normal Cessna 172 to a F-15. That’s when I started to really love aviation.
One thing that I’m also admired by is physics. A career in aviation is right up my alley when talking about physics. I’ve been liking physics ever since I was amazed by J. Robert Oppenheimer and how he used quantum mechanics and physics to create the atom bomb. Although this quite different from aviation, it’s about how Oppenheimer used physics to help US win the war. I’ve owned American Prometheus and have read it when I’ve got the chance to. Having this ambition for physics is why I’m passionate about a career in aviation, to better understand how planes in general use nature to fly. As apart of my IB program, I’m obligated to make a personal project, what I have devoted it to is making a DIY RC plane. After I learn how to do this, I plan to test it in multiple scientific experiments to see how different modifications can improve its overall performance.
