My name is Christian Garcia, and my journey is woven with threads of history and community service. My passion for American history ignited long before I set foot on the historic streets of Boston, New York, and Washington D.C. This trip deepened my appreciation for our nation’s past and shaped my understanding of my role in the community.
In Boston, the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum connected me to the courage of the patriots who fought for freedom. This determination resonates with my commitment to community service at my church, where I film and create announcements that encourage our congregation. Through my videos, I’ve witnessed lives transformed, reminding me of the power of inspiration.
In New York, the Statue of Liberty symbolized hope and resilience, reflecting my work with Sources of Strength (SOS), a youth suicide prevention program. As I enter my senior year, I’m honored to continue my role as a peer leader, fostering a supportive environment for students.
Washington D.C. was the pinnacle of my journey. Standing before the Lincoln Memorial, I felt respect for the ideals of equality and justice. My involvement in SOS campaigns addressing drug and tobacco use has reinforced my belief in the power of collective action.
Beyond community service, I earned a black belt in kenpo karate and taught myself guitar and drums. These experiences, alongside my participation in clubs like the National Honor Society, shaped me into a dedicated individual.

Pursuing a degree in Aviation Science at Baylor University is the result of both a long term goal and a growing appreciation for the responsibility aviation requires. I became interested in aviation because it combines precision, critical thinking, and calm decision-making under pressure. Those qualities are not only essential in the cockpit, but also in everyday life. They are qualities I have intentionally worked to develop through school, service, and leadership experiences.
What draws me most to aviation is that it is both challenging and meaningful. A pilot must be disciplined, adaptable, and committed to the safety of others, which makes the profession one of great responsibility. I am motivated not only by the goal of becoming a pilot for a major airline, but also by the chance to use aviation to serve others. In the future, I plan to build my flight hours through a mission-based aviation organization so I can contribute to humanitarian efforts while gaining valuable experience.
I believe I exemplify leadership through initiative, reliability, and service to others. I graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA while completing Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses, which required strong time management and discipline. I made those choices intentionally so I could prepare for college and reduce the time and cost of earning my degree. To me, leadership means making thoughtful decisions now that create better opportunities in the future.
My leadership also shows in the ways I have served my community. I volunteer 20 to 30 hours each month in my church’s audio-visual program, helping produce and manage services for a large audience. This role has taught me how important it is to be dependable and work well with others, especially when behind-the-scenes efforts affect so many people. I have learned that leadership is not always visible, but it is always impactful.
I have also led through creative work at my high school and district, where I produced, filmed, and edited public service announcements that helped support school programs and generated thousands of dollars. That experience taught me how to take initiative, manage projects, and turn ideas into results. In addition, my involvement in the Sources of Strength program allowed me to mentor younger students and support them as they transitioned into high school.
Through that experience, I developed empathy, communication skills, and a stronger sense of responsibility to those around me. Overall, my interest in aviation comes from my respect for the field’s demands and purpose, and my leadership comes from the choices I have made to serve others, stay disciplined, and take responsibility seriously. I am eager to continue growing in both areas as I pursue my education and future career.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
Pursuing higher education has always been one of my primary goals, but I have come to understand that earning a degree today requires more than academic dedication It requires careful financial planning and personal sacrifice. As I prepare to attend Baylor University as an Aviation Science major, I am focused not only on achieving my career goals, but also on doing so in a way that minimizes financial strain on my family and avoids long term debt. This scholarship would significantly support that effort and allow me to pursue my education with greater stability and focus.
My interest in aviation stems from both the challenge and the responsibility that come with the profession. Aviation requires precision, critical thinking, and the ability to remain composed under pressure. These qualities are ones I have intentionally developed through my academic work and extracurricular involvement. My long term goal is to become a pilot for a major airline, but I am equally motivated by the opportunity to serve others through aviation. I plan to build my flight hours by working with a mission based aviation organization, where I can contribute to humanitarian efforts while gaining valuable experience. This path allows me to align my professional ambitions with my desire to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Beyond academics, my commitment to service has been a central part of my life. I currently volunteer between 20 and 30 hours each month through my church’s audio visual program. In this role, I help produce and manage services that reach a large audience, ensuring that each service runs smoothly and effectively. I have learned that even behind the scene roles carry significant responsibility and can have a meaningful impact on others.
In addition to my church involvement, I have contributed to my school community by producing, filming, and editing public service announcements for my high school and district. As a result of these efforts, thousands of dollars were generated to support school programs. This experience taught me how to take initiative, manage projects from concept to completion, and use creativity to produce measurable outcomes.
I was also actively involved in the “Sources of Strength” program, a peer-led mental health initiative focused on mentoring younger students. Through this program, I worked to support students as they transitioned into high school, helping them build resilience and a sense of connection. This experience was particularly meaningful because it allowed me to make a direct impact on individuals during a critical stage in their lives. It strengthened my ability to lead with empathy, communicate effectively, and contribute to a positive and supportive environment.
This scholarship would provide meaningful relief by helping cover the cost of tuition and other educational expenses, allowing me to focus on my studies and flight training. It would also reinforce the efforts I have already made to reduce costs through academic planning and community involvement. More importantly, it would enable me to continue pursuing opportunities that align with both my career goals and my commitment to service.
I believe I should be considered for this scholarship because I have demonstrated a strong work ethic, a commitment to serving others, and a clear vision for my future. My academic achievements, combined with my involvement in community service and leadership initiatives, reflect my dedication to making the most of every opportunity I am given.
With the support of this scholarship, I will continue to pursue excellence in my education and remain committed to using my skills and opportunities to serve both my community and those in need.

I recently graduated high school with a 3.89 GPA, an achievement that reflects years of consistent effort and discipline. Throughout my academic career, I challenged myself by enrolling in multiple Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses. These classes required a higher level of responsibility and time management, but they also provided a meaningful advantage: many of these credits will transfer to Baylor University, reducing both the time and cost required to complete my degree. Taking these courses was a strategic decision that reflects my commitment to making education more affordable while maintaining a high standard of academic performance.

While I have worked hard to prepare myself academically and personally for college, the financial reality of pursuing a degree, especially in aviation, remains a significant challenge. Aviation programs require not only tuition, but also additional costs such as flight training, certifications, and specialized equipment. These expenses can quickly add up, making it difficult to manage without substantial financial support. I am intentionally seeking ways to reduce these costs because I want to avoid taking on excessive student loans and prevent placing a financial burden on my family. Spirit of Wenatchee Aviation Scholarship
I am pursuing aviation because it combines technical precision, personal discipline, and a greater purpose beyond myself. After graduating with a 3.89 GPA and being accepted into Baylor University’s Aviation Science program, I am committed to building a career that reflects both excellence and service. My longterm goal is to become a pilot for a major airline, but I am equally driven by the opportunity to use aviation as a tool to help others along the way.
What inspired me to pursue aviation is the unique responsibility pilots carry. Aviation demands sound judgment, constant learning, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Qualities I have worked to develop throughout my academic and extracurricular experiences. The idea of safely transporting people across the world while operating complex aircraft systems motivates me to continually grow both personally and professionally.
In the near term, I plan to build my flight hours by flying with a mission-based aviation organization. This path would allow me to serve communities in need while gaining real world experience as a pilot. Mission aviation represents more than just flight hours to me. It is an opportunity to combine my career development with meaningful service, whether that involves delivering supplies, transporting individuals, or supporting humanitarian efforts. This aligns with my belief that aviation can be used not only as a profession, but also as a platform to make a tangible difference.
My commitment to service is already reflected in my involvement within my community. I volunteer between 20 and 30 hours each month through my church’s audio-visual program, where I assist in producing and managing services that reach a broad audience. This role has strengthened my ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively, and take ownership of responsibilities that directly impact others.
In addition, I have contributed to my school community by producing, filming, and editing public service announcements for my high school and district. These projects helped generate thousands of dollars in funding for school programs, demonstrating how media and communication can drive real results. I have also been involved in the “Sources of Strength” program, a mental health initiative focused on mentoring younger students and helping them navigate the challenges of high school. Through this program, I have had the opportunity to support others, promote resilience, and contribute to a positive school environment.
Aviation represents more than a career path for me, it is a way to combine skill, service, and purpose. At Baylor University, I plan to continue developing the knowledge and discipline required to succeed in aviation while remaining actively involved in service opportunities. Whether flying for a mission organization or eventually for a major airline, I am committed to using my training to positively impact others and uphold the highest standards of professionalism.

“When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself, the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They are like this because they can’t tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own. Not of the same blood and birth, but the same mind. Possessing a share of the divine, and so none of them can hurt me. No one can implicate me in ugliness. Nor can I feel angry at my relative, or hate him. We were born to work together like feet, hands and eyes, like the two rows of teeth, upper and lower. To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are unnatural.” (Meditations by Marcus Aurelius)
Thesis: Marcus Aurelius means that other people’s conduct does not have to govern your inner life. The real test of character is whether you keep your reason, restraint, and sense of duty when surrounded by irritation, injustice, or disrespect. The passage below shows Stoicism not as emotional numbness, but as disciplined self command and moral independence.
Marcus Aurelius is writing as both philosopher and ruler, and that matters because the passage is not an abstract theory. It is practical mental training for life among difficult people, the kind of people who test patience, judgment, and moral courage every day. He does not deny that people can be dishonest, selfish, or offensive. Instead, he argues that their flaws should be understood as a failure of moral vision, not as a license for us to imitate them or let them control our responses.[reddit]
The deepest idea in the paragraph is that harm is internal before it is external. Another person may insult you, obstruct you, or act unfairly, but they cannot force you to become bitter, cruel, or dishonorable unless you surrender your judgment. Marcus repeatedly treats opinion as the real battlefield of human life. What wounds us most is often not the event itself, but our interpretation of it. That is why he insists that no one can “implicate” him in ugliness; he is claiming responsibility for his own moral condition.
This also reveals the stoic distinction between what is in our control and what is not. Other people’s behavior is outside our control, but our own response belongs to us. Marcus is not saying we should approve of wrongdoing or become passive in the face of injustice. He is saying that anger, hatred, and revenge are poor tools because they corrode the person using them. A just response requires clarity, not emotional surrender. In that sense, his advice is less about being “nice” and more about remaining free.
The comparison to feet, hands, eyes, and teeth is especially important because it turns ethics into a theory of human cooperation. Marcus believes that people are not isolated atoms competing for status. They are parts of a larger social body. If hands worked against feet, the whole body would fail. So when he says it is unnatural to obstruct one another, he means that human beings fulfill their purpose by working together through reason, justice, and mutual respect. This is a moral vision of society, not merely a personal coping strategy.
That vision also explains why he speaks about the wrongdoer as related to him. His idea of kinship is broader than blood. It comes from the shared capacity for reason and the divine spark that Stoicism sees in all people. This is a hard teaching, because it asks us to recognize dignity even in those who behave badly. Marcus is not excusing vice, he is refusing dehumanization. The person who wrongs us is still a human being, still capable of reason, and still part of the same moral universe.
A modern reader can easily reduce the passage to a selfhelp slogan about “not letting people bother you,” but that misses the ethical center. Marcus is not teaching emotional detachment for comfort. He is teaching moral discipline for service. If I understand others as fellow rational beings, then my obligation is to answer offense with justice, not with vengeance. To answer disorder with self-mastery, not with collapse. The passage therefore links inner stability with public virtue. A person who cannot govern his own anger cannot reliably govern anything else.
What makes the paragraph powerful is its realism. Marcus begins with a grim expectation of human weakness, not with idealism. He assumes he will meet selfishness and pettiness. Yet he does not become cynical, because cynicism would mean surrendering the possibility of shared reason and shared duty. Instead, he prepares himself to meet ugliness without becoming ugly. That is the stoic achievement, not the denial of adversity.
The paragraph also contains a quiet but demanding humility. Marcus does not present himself as morally superior by nature. He says he has “seen the beauty of good” and the “ugliness of evil,” implying that moral vision is something learned, chosen, and practiced. He is trying to wake himself up each morning to live by principle rather than impulse. In that sense, the passage is a rehearsal for virtue. The real audience is the self, and the real struggle is against one’s own readiness to be ruled by irritation.
Ultimately, the underlying meaning is that a good life depends on how one interprets and responds to the conduct of others. Marcus Aurelius wants the reader to become the kind of person who cannot be made vicious by vice around him. He proposes a sturdy, demanding ideal. Remain rational, remain just, remain connected to others, and refuse to let another person’s failures destroy your own humanity. That is why the passage still matters. It asks not whether the world is difficult, but whether we can meet difficulty with an unbroken mind and a decent heart.

Life has a way of redirecting us when we are certain we know exactly where we are headed. Over the past two years, I have experienced a defining moment that challenged my plans, tested my resilience, and ultimately reshaped my perspective on purpose and success. Two years ago, I suffered a serious back injury at a time when I was fully committed to pursuing an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. That goal had become the driving force behind my academic performance, physical training, and personal discipline. Even during recovery, I remained focused. I followed every medical recommendation, worked through rehabilitation, and eventually achieved full clearance with no restrictions. Overcoming that injury strengthened my confidence and reinforced my belief that hard work could overcome adversity.
As I moved forward with my applications, I saw my efforts paying off. I was honored to receive two congressional nominations and one senatorial nomination, and I had been accepted into several other universities as well. I felt prepared, competitive, and hopeful. However, my journey took an unexpected turn when my medical evaluation resulted in a disqualification. Although the Academy initiated a waiver due to my strong candidacy, I was left waiting in uncertainty.
During that time, I began to reflect on other opportunities that I had not previously considered. I was accepted into a faith based university that offered a Christ centered education. This is something that aligned deeply with my personal values but had not been my original plan. Still, I held tightly to my goal of attending a service academy. When I ultimately learned that my medical waiver was denied, I felt a mix of anger, confusion, and disappointment. Yet, through that disappointment, I began to see a different perspective. The opportunity in front of me was not a setback, but a redirection. I realized that while my path to service may look different than I originally envisioned, my purpose had not changed.
This experience has taught me that growth often comes through uncertainty and that faith requires trust even when outcomes do not match expectations. I now approach my future with a stronger sense of resilience and openness, understanding that success is not defined by a single path but by the commitment to keep moving forward. I am confident that the opportunity I have been given will shape me into the person I am meant to become, and I am motivated to continue working hard, trusting that each step, whether planned or unexpected is part of a greater purpose.
Dick Loges Veteran Entrepreneur Scholarship
Growing up, I have been shaped by two powerful influences: my father’s example of service and entrepreneurship, and my faith in Jesus Christ. Together, they have guided my educational goals, strengthened my character, and shaped how I approach my future. My father is a Marine Corps veteran who jokes that he’s “not as lean, not as mean, but still a Marine.” That identity has never left him. For over 23 years, he has continued his commitment to service through a career in law enforcement and now serves at the Veterans Affairs, supporting fellow veterans.
Watching his discipline and sense of duty has shown me what it means to live with purpose. Beyond his service, my father has also built an entrepreneurial path through real estate investing. He has consistently emphasized financial literacy and long-term planning, pushing me to think differently about money. He even required me to read books like Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Principles by Ray Dalio. Through these lessons, I’ve learned the importance of avoiding unnecessary debt. While my parents are committed to helping me pursue my college dreams, they have made it clear that financial responsibility matters.
Because of this, my goal is to contribute as much as possible to my education and graduate with minimal debt. My father’s military background has also shaped my educational journey by instilling resilience, accountability, and discipline. These values helped me navigate challenges, including dealing with negativity on social media. Encouraged by my father’s advice to “Speak Life,” I chose to step away from conflict and focus on positivity. That decision protected my mental health and reshaped how I engage with others.
My faith in Jesus Christ has been the foundation that ties everything together. My belief in His life, death, and resurrection gives me a deep sense of purpose and direction. This faith led me to join Sources of Strength (SOS), a youth mental health and suicide prevention program. As a peer leader and media director, I created campaigns that encouraged hope and connection within my community. This experience showed me that I can use my voice and skills to uplift others. In addition, I dedicate 20–30 hours each month serving on my church’s audio-visual team. This role has strengthened my technical skills while deepening my commitment to serving others. It has also shown me how faith can bring people together and create a strong sense of community.
Looking ahead, I plan to pursue a career that blends media, service, and mental health advocacy. My father’s example has taught me discipline and financial responsibility, while his entrepreneurial mindset has encouraged me to think strategically about my future. Combined with my faith, these influences have given me a clear direction: to build a life that serves others, promotes positivity, and remains grounded in strong values.
As I approach the end of my high school journey, I remain committed to “Speaking Life” in my community and pursuing my education with purpose and responsibility. Through hard work and intentional choices, I am determined to make a meaningful impact.
Treye Knorr Memorial Scholarship
My name is Christian Garcia, and I believe that inclusion is one of the strongest foundations a community can have. Throughout my life, I have worked to strengthen the communities around me through leadership, service, and encouragement. Whether through Sources of Strength at school, my church, sports, or work, I have learned that real impact comes from helping others feel valued, supported, and connected.
At Owyhee High School, my involvement in the Sources of Strength program has been one of the most meaningful ways I have contributed to inclusion. As a peer leader and media director, I help create campaigns that promote mental health awareness, resilience, and hope. This work has shown me that every student faces challenges, and many of those struggles remain hidden. By helping produce messages that encourage openness and support, I have tried to create a school environment where students feel safe to ask for help and know they are not alone. Sources of Strength has taught me that inclusion is not just about welcoming people in, but about making sure they feel seen, heard, and cared for.
My family has also shaped the way I serve others. My father always told me to “speak life,” and that phrase has stayed with me. It reminds me that words can either build someone up or tear them down. Because of that, I try to be intentional in how I speak and act toward others. I have learned to respond to conflict with patience and to treat people with respect, even when we come from different backgrounds or experiences. This mindset has helped me build stronger relationships and has made me more aware of the power I have to influence the people around me in a positive way.
My church community has given me another opportunity to strengthen inclusion through service. On the audio-visual team, I help record services and support community events. This role allows me to use my skills in media while contributing to something larger than myself. It has also shown me how important it is for people to come together in faith, especially during times of uncertainty. Through church, I have seen how service can unite people and create a sense of belonging that extends beyond Sunday mornings.
I have also learned the value of teamwork and perseverance through athletics and work. Playing rugby and participating in scholastic mountain biking taught me how to work with others toward a common goal. These experiences showed me that success depends on trust, communication, and encouraging the people beside you. Working part-time jobs while maintaining strong academics further strengthened my discipline and responsibility.
More recently, I started my own media company, which has allowed me to use my creativity to serve others and continue growing as a leader. My education will help me continue this commitment in college and beyond by preparing me to serve others with both skill and purpose.
I plan to study Aviation Sciences because I want to combine my passion for problem-solving, service, and mission work. My goal is to work for a Christian mission aviation company, where I can help connect underserved communities to resources, hope, and opportunity. Aviation is more than a career goal for me; it is a way to use my education to reach people and make a difference.
In college, I will continue building inclusive communities through leadership, service, and mentorship. I hope to stay involved in campus ministry, volunteer work, and creative outreach that brings people together. The lessons I have learned through my family, school, church, and work have shaped me into someone who values connection and service. With the education I receive, I will be better prepared to continue strengthening communities wherever I go.

My name is Christian Garcia, and I am a high school senior with a GPA of 4.0, and actively engaged in community service. As I approach graduation, I am eager to further my education in Aviation sciences, a field that excites me and aligns with my passion for innovation and problem-solving. However, the financial burden of college education is significant, and this scholarship would play a crucial role in helping me achieve my academic goals.
Balancing my responsibilities has been a significant part of my high school experience. In addition to maintaining my GPA, I have worked two part-time jobs as a handyman and at McDonald’s. Both jobs taught me valuable life lessons, but I was recently able to leave those jobs behind and start my own media company. Juggling work with academics and sports requires discipline, but it has prepared me for the challenges of college life.
Sports have been an integral part of my high school journey. I have participated in rugby, and scholastic mountain biking, which has taught me teamwork, resilience, and leadership. The camaraderie built within the teams has enriched my high school experience and has fostered friendships that I will cherish for years. The lessons learned on the field translate into my academic pursuits, where I strive to be a leader among my peers, encouraging collaboration and mutual support.
In addition to my athletic commitments, I dedicate a significant amount of time to community service. Volunteering with my church and participating in the Sources of Strength (SOS) program allows me to give back to my community by promoting mental health awareness and supporting my peers. Through SOS, I’ve directed media campaigns addressing critical issues affecting youth today, such as suicide prevention and substance use. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the importance of community and the impact we can have on each other’s lives.
Receiving this scholarship would alleviate some of the financial pressure associated with pursuing higher education. It would enable me to focus more on my studies and extracurricular activities rather than worrying about how to cover tuition and related expenses. I plan to use the funds to help pay for textbooks, lab supplies, and other essential resources that will enhance my learning experience. Additionally, this scholarship would allow me to participate in workshops and seminars related to aviation, further enriching my education.
My ultimate goal is to work for a Christian mission aviation company where I can contribute to a positive real-world challenge. This scholarship would not only support my immediate educational needs but would also be an investment in my future, enabling me to contribute positively to society through my work.

Forever90 Scholarship
Faith has been the cornerstone of my life, guiding me through challenges and shaping my character as I pursue my educational journey. My belief in Jesus Christ who lived, died, and rose again for my salvation gives me a profound sense of purpose and direction. That faith inspires me to serve others, lead with compassion, and make meaningful contributions to my community.
One of the most impactful ways I live out a life of service is through my leadership in Sources of Strength (SOS), a national program dedicated to youth mental health and suicide prevention. As a peer leader and media director, I use storytelling to promote hope, connection, and resilience among my peers. By creating campaigns that highlight personal strength and community support, I help foster an environment where students feel seen, valued, and encouraged to seek help in difficult times. My faith drives this work reminding me that every act of kindness, and every word of encouragement can bring light to someone in darkness.
Service also extends into my church community, where I dedicate 20–30 hours each month to the audio-visual team. In this role, I merge my passion for media production with my commitment to faith, supporting worship services and community events through sound, lighting, and broadcast technology. These behind the scenes contributions allow me to help others connect spiritually and feel a deeper sense of belonging. Working as part of this team has strengthened my skills in communication, leadership, and collaboration. Qualities that will serve me well both in college, and in my future career.
My father’s simple but powerful teaching to “Speak Life” continues to influence my daily actions. When faced with negativity especially on social media I’ve learned to respond with grace, to take care of my mental health, and to encourage others instead of judging them. That mindset has shaped my belief that real leadership begins with positivity and empathy, which I strive to bring into every space I occupy.
Looking ahead, I plan to use my education at Baylor University to expand this mission of service.
Baylor’s focus on faith-based leadership and community engagement aligns perfectly with my personal values and my passion for media and mental health advocacy. I envision creating digital media platforms that promotes positivity, share resources for emotional support, and highlight stories of resilience. Through innovative media work, I hope to continue “speaking life” on a broader scale, amplifying voices, building community, and inspiring hope.
Receiving this scholarship would empower me to pursue that calling more fully. It would relieve some of the financial pressure on my family and allow me to focus on my studies, service, and professional growth. More importantly, it would represent an investment not only in my education but in my ability to serve others through the gifts God has given me.
Ultimately, I view service not as a separate activity but as a way of life. A daily commitment to bring faith, compassion, and encouragement into every interaction. At Baylor, I will continue growing as a servant leader, using the tools of media and communication to uplift, connect, and empower others. My goal is simple. To help people find hope in their hardest moments and to use my education to shine light into places that need it most.
DAC Rugby Scholarship
My name is Christian Garcia, and I am a senior at Owyhee High School with a 3.8 GPA, an active participant in community service, and a proud member of the Owyhee High School club rugby team. The two years I’ve played rugby has been one of the most transformative parts of my high school experience. The sport has challenged me physically and mentally, taught me about perseverance and leadership, and strengthened my ability to balance academics, work, and extracurricular commitments.
When I first joined the Owyhee rugby team, I was just looking for a club to join. However, I was drawn to the sport’s intensity and camaraderie. Rugby is physically demanding, but what surprised me most was how much it required mental toughness and communication. Whether I was sprinting to make a tackle, organizing defensive lines, or supporting a teammate in a ruck, every moment demanded unity and trust. Over two seasons, I learned that success in rugby isn’t about individual performance, it’s about commitment to the team and playing for something greater than yourself.
Balancing rugby with academics and part-time work required discipline and time management. During my sophomore year, I was working two jobs—one at McDonald’s and another as a handyman—while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. At times, there were days I would go from class to rugby practice, and then straight to work. Those long days tested my endurance, but they also strengthened my sense of responsibility. This same dedication later helped me start my own media company, where I apply the same teamwork and communication skills that rugby taught me to manage projects and clients.
Rugby has also shaped my character in ways that go beyond the field. The sport is built on respect. Respect for teammates, opponents, coaches, and officials. Even in the most intense moments, players are expected to embody integrity and sportsmanship. Playing for Owyhee taught me humility and accountability, as well as how to handle adversity with composure. Losses are never easy, but learning to review plays, accept feedback, and support others even in defeat built resilience I now carry into academics and leadership roles.
As I developed as a player, I also found my voice as a leader. During my second season, I began mentoring new players who were just learning the sport. Helping them navigate the fundamentals of passing, tackling, and positioning reminded me of how far I had come. It made me realize leadership isn’t just about giving direction, it’s about inspiring confidence and guiding others to see their own potential. These experiences have encouraged me to take initiative in group projects and community activities, such as the Sources of Strength (SOS) program, where I help promote mental health awareness and lead media campaigns to support my peers.
Rugby has sparked an ongoing motivation to grow and learn, both as an athlete and as a person. The sport demands continuous improvement. There’s always a new skill to master or a smarter play to make. That same curiosity and drive reflect my passion for engineering, understanding how things work, solving complex problems, and improving systems. In many ways, rugby has prepared me for the challenges of pursuing engineering, where teamwork, strategy, and innovation go hand in hand.
As I prepare to graduate, I look forward to continuing club rugby in college. I know that the lessons of discipline, resilience, teamwork, and leadership I’ve gained from Owyhee’s rugby program will guide me well beyond the classroom. Rugby has helped define who I am. Someone who leads with purpose, learns from challenges, and commits fully to every opportunity.
Ryan T. Herich Memorial Scholarship
My name is Christian Garcia, and my journey is woven with threads of history, community service, and personal growth. My passion for American history ignited long before I set foot on the historic streets of Boston, New York, and Washington D.C. These trips were not just a voyage to significant landmarks; it was a deep dive into the very fabric of our nation’s past, an experience that has profoundly shaped my understanding of who we are as Americans and my role in our community.
As I wandered the cobblestone streets of Boston, I felt a connection to the ideals that sparked our nation’s birth. Standing at the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, I envisioned the courage of those early patriots who fought for freedom. Their determination resonates with me, especially as I engage in community service through my church and school. Volunteering 10-20 hours a month at my church, I film and create announcements that encourage our congregation to embrace faith and community. Seeing lives transformed through my videos is a powerful reminder that, like the founding fathers, we can inspire change.
My appreciation for history deepened as I explored New York City. The Statue of Liberty stood tall, a symbol of hope and resilience. I reflected on the journeys of countless immigrants who sought a better life, much like the support I strive to provide through my involvement with Sources of Strength (SOS). This national program focuses on youth suicide prevention and overall well-being, a cause that resonates deeply with me. As I manage my senior year, I am honored to continue my role as a peer leader, fostering a supportive environment for my peers.
Washington D.C. was the pinnacle of my historical journey. As I stood before the Lincoln Memorial, I felt a profound respect for the ideals of equality and justice that Abraham Lincoln championed. His words echo in my commitment to community service. Through SOS, I have directed campaigns addressing critical issues such as drug and tobacco use, which affect my generation. My involvement as a media director in these campaigns allowed me to channel my love for history into action, using modern tools to educate and inspire change.
The success of our campaigns, which garnered sponsorships from local businesses, is a testament to the impact we can make when we unite for a common cause. Just as the founding fathers rallied together to forge a new nation, our team at SOS collaborated to empower students and promote mental health awareness. Each success story reinforces my belief that we all have the capacity to lead, just as those who shaped our nation once did.
Beyond my commitment to community service, I have embraced various interests that have enriched my life. Earning a black belt in kenpo karate taught me discipline and resilience, while teaching myself to play the guitar and drums during the pandemic allowed me to express my creativity. These experiences, along with my active participation in clubs like the National Honor Society and rugby, have shaped me into a well-rounded individual who values hard work and dedication.
In conclusion, my journey through history and community service has equipped me with a deeper understanding of my role in society. The lessons learned from our founding fathers and the historical figures who paved the way for our freedoms inspire me to continue making a difference in my community. Through my experiences, I have learned that every action, no matter how small, has the potential to create a ripple effect of positive change.
Daniel R. Torres "Complete Your Dream” Memorial Scholarship
Dreams have always been a driving force in my life. Through each stage of high school, my dreams have evolved from athletic achievements to academic milestones, community service goals, and most recently, a vision for my university journey. Some dreams have faded with time, others have transformed, and a few are blooming into reality right before my eyes. As I approach the final chapter of high school, I find myself standing at the edge of a new beginning, eager to “Complete my dream.”
My dream now is clear… To graduate from college debt free while continuing to serve my community and build the skills that will lead to a career in aviation. It’s a dream shaped by determination, service, and gratitude. Values that have guided me since childhood. From the first moment I watched a plane cross the Idaho sky, I was fascinated by flight. The freedom, precision, and purpose of aviation captured me. As I grew older, that fascination became a goal. To work in aviation, not just as a career, but as a pathway to inspire others through dedication and service. As with any meaningful dream, reaching it requires discipline, sacrifice, and a clear plan.
The first step toward achieving my dream was setting a strong educational foundation. Throughout high school, I prioritized classes that challenged me to think critically and creatively. I didn’t just study to earn grades, I studied to learn, to prepare for the rigorous environment of university life. I researched majors, studied potential class schedules, and sought opportunities to connect learning with hands on experience. My curiosity pushed me beyond the classroom. I joined clubs, took leadership roles, and led community-driven media projects that strengthened not only my skills, but my sense of responsibility to others.
During these last few years, I’ve also developed a deep interest in media production and communications. I launched platforms on social media and local television that raised thousands of dollars for my school and community causes. These experiences showed me that service can take many forms, sometimes through direct action, other times through storytelling and outreach. They’ve also given me practical skills I can now use to work toward financial independence.
That’s where the second part of my dream comes in…To graduate debt free. My parents have supported me in every way possible, not just financially, but with guidance, encouragement, and belief in my potential. I want to honor their sacrifices by taking ownership of my future. By using my media and communication skills, I plan to work during college. to create thoughtful, community-focused content, develop partnerships, and take on freelance opportunities that align with my interests. Financial freedom after graduation will allow me to build a life of purpose, without the weight of heavy debt limiting my choices or slowing my progress toward a career in aviation.
The third part of my dream, building skills for aviation. This requires persistence and planning. I’ve spent years researching pathways into the field, from aerospace engineering and flight operations to air traffic management and aviation marketing. Whichever path I choose, I want it to connect back to service. Aviation is about connecting people and places, breaking boundaries, and keeping the world moving safely and efficiently. I want to be part of that mission. Whether it’s through technical work, communication, or leadership, my goal is to bring the same commitment and focus I’ve learned through school and community work into the aviation industry.
“Completing a dream” is not only about personal success. It’s also about the impact my journey can have on the people around me. Throughout high school, I’ve witnessed how one person’s determination can create ripples of encouragement. When I raised funds for community projects, younger students saw what teamwork and initiative could accomplish. When I led student media coverage of school events, others learned how communication could build unity and school pride. I hope that as I complete my own dream, I inspire others. Especially younger students to pursue their own, even when those dreams feel far away or too large to grasp.
I’m aware that completing a dream doesn’t happen in isolation. It takes a network of support, patience, and the resilience to keep going through setbacks. Over the years, I’ve faced challenges that tested my confidence, but each obstacle became part of the process.
Now, as I await university decisions, I feel both anxious and hopeful.
I’ve worked for years toward my top choice school. Researching successful applicants, their history, connecting with their mission, and imagining my future on that campus. Within weeks, I’ll know where the next chapter begins. Yet no matter where I land, I’m proud of the person I’ve become along the way. My dream isn’t limited to one school. It lives in my values, my work ethic, and my vision for the future.
Completing my dream means continuing to serve others, lifting my community, and living a life fueled by purpose, not just success. It means staying humble, rooted in gratitude, and always striving to help others rise as I climb toward my goals. It also means recognizing that dreams don’t end at one milestone, they expand, grow, and evolve with us. Graduating debt free will give me freedom. Serving others through media and aviation will give me purpose. Together, they will allow me to honor the people who’ve supported me. My family, teachers, mentors, and church.
Completing my dreams is just a phrase. It’s a way of life! Dreams are not completed by luck or timing. They are completed by effort, kindness, and the courage to keep going even when the path is uncertain. I’m ready to keep working, growing, and serving to complete my drems, and every dream that follows.
James T. Godwin Memorial Scholarship
My dad is my greatest role model. A proud Marine Corps veteran and a twenty-year police officer, he has spent his life serving others. Recently, he began a second career with the Department of Veterans Affairs, continuing his lifelong commitment to helping those who have served. A few years ago, he made the difficult decision to leave his career in California to move our family to a safer, cleaner Idaho. It was a leap of faith, one rooted in love and the desire to give us a better life.
From a young age, my dad taught me respect, kindness, humility, and Christian values. Those lessons shaped who I am today—someone who strives for excellence while holding tightly to my faith. I’ve maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school, and I was recently accepted into Baylor University’s aviation program. Being accepted to Baylor feels like a dream come true: a world-class education at a university that shares my Christian values and passion for purpose-driven achievement.
Some of my fondest memories come from the nights my dad would read to me. We didn’t have a lot of money, but when it came to books, there was never a limit. Barnes & Noble became our special place. He would help me choose my next adventure—stories filled with wonder, courage, and imagination. As I got older, those adventures grew into something deeper. My dad began reading biographies of Medal of Honor recipients and stories of war heroes like With the Old Breed, Parachute Soldiers, and Lone Survivor. Those stories taught me about sacrifice, faith, and patriotism.
Through those lessons, I developed a profound respect for those who serve our country. I plan to follow that path by serving in the Navy or Air National Guard after graduating from college. I know the discipline and principles my father instilled in me will guide me through that journey, just as they have helped me succeed in school and life.
My dad also set the example for perseverance and hard work. He encouraged me to earn my black belt in karate, balance academics with part-time work, and volunteer nearly twenty hours each month at our church. Each of these accomplishments reminds me of his steady voice encouraging me to keep pushing forward.
To this day, whenever I walk into a Barnes & Noble, I feel a wave of nostalgia. It’s more than just a bookstore—it’s where my dad and I built a bond grounded in love, curiosity, and faith. His example continues to light my path, and I carry his lessons with me wherever I go.

Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Love or respect. This better describes my relationship with math. Having a goal of becoming an engineer, I’ve endured math’s complexity to help guide me toward my goal.
Mathematics serves as the backbone of mechanical engineering, intricately woven into its various disciplines such as physics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and combustion. The more I learn about engineering, the more I realize each area relies on mathematical principles to model systems, solve complex problems, and optimize designs.
In physics, mathematical equations describe the fundamental laws governing motion, forces, and energy. For instance, Newton’s laws of motion utilize calculus and algebra to predict the behavior of objects under various forces. These principles are essential for designing mechanical systems that are safe and efficient.
Thermodynamics, the study of heat and energy transfer, employs mathematical models to analyze the behavior of gases and liquids. Equations such as the ideal gas law (PV=nRT) help engineers determine how materials will respond to changes in temperature and pressure. This knowledge is crucial in applications like engine design, where efficient energy conversion is paramount.
Fluid dynamics, another critical area, relies on differential equations to model the behavior of fluids in motion. The Navier-Stokes equations, for example, describe how fluid velocity, pressure, and viscosity interact. Understanding these interactions enables engineers to design everything from airplane wings to hydraulic systems, ensuring optimal performance.
Combustion, the process of burning fuels, involves complex chemical reactions that can be analyzed mathematically to maximize efficiency and minimize emissions. The use of mathematical models allows engineers to predict reaction rates and heat release, which is vital for developing cleaner energy technologies.
The beauty of mathematics in mechanical engineering lies in its ability to provide precise answers to intricate questions. Respect. It transforms abstract concepts into tangible solutions, enhancing our understanding of the physical world. Love. This fusion of logic and creativity is what makes mathematics truly amazing, enabling innovations that shape our everyday lives.

Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
Some say cyber bullying is the cost of the internet. Nonsense. The real cost is anxiety, stress, depression, etc. The internet provides many forms of freedom, but every form of freedom comes with responsibility.
My experience with the issues of bullying began in junior high, on a school platform called Dashboard. Dashboard is an online chat room we used to help each other with assignments and communication on projects. It quickly turned in to a den of trash talk. It was full of insulting memes, and disparaging remarks that were probably meant to be funny, but were mostly mean.
This type of teasing or bullying seems harmless. “Sticks and Stones… right?” Well it was often a source of anxiety for most. Including myself. What insults were going to be thrown my way today? Should I respond, or should I ignore? If I ignore, I’m a “Bitch,” for not standing up for myself. If I confront my attacker, I was bully. As confusing as it was, I constantly felt the need to log in and see what was on there today. It was an addiction of its own.
My parents could see the frustration I was feeling, and when I would talk to them about it my father would say, “Speak Life.” He took that phrase from a song, but it basically means he wanted me to be the mature one. Instead of responding with hate he suggested I set the example by adding positive posts.
I stick to that advice today. Admittedly I stay away from social media, but I can’t really avoid forums like Dashboard or Google Classroom. When I do use them for school purposes, I make sure to “Speak life” in to the conversation.
This same philosophy steered me in to a school program called Sources of Strength. SOS is a national program that promotes youth suicide prevention, and overall well being. My upcoming senior year will be my third year participating in this program, and I’m honored to serve.
Not only has SOS helped me with stress, anxiety, and insecurities, I’ve seen it play a positive role in the lives of others that utilized our student help phone lines. Since starting this program in my sophomore year, I have participated as a peer leader in several campaigns regarding issues my generation struggles with. The most notable ones were State run programs fighting drug, tobacco, and vaping.
As the media director on those campaigns, I directed and filmed social media posts and a commercial that was aired locally. These advertisements we created lead to local monetary sponsorships from the largest car dealership and credit union in the State of Idaho. Those monetary sponsorships generated thousands of dollars for our school, and grew the SOS program by several students.
I’ve participated in several school clubs. National Honor Society, rugby, and cycling to name a few, but none have impacted me as much as my participation in Sources of Strength. I have been fortunate to also volunteer several hours a week on my church’s audio visual team. The skills acquired at church helped me produce better media projects for Sources of Strength.
As I start my senior year and all of its activities, I’m also starting the journey of where and how I will continue my education. Scholarships like this are a blessing and will help me pursue my goals. While I have my preference, wherever I’m fortunate enough to attend college, I will continue my service and participation in clubs that support my peers by Speaking Life.

Charles Bowlus Memorial Scholarship
I am fortunate! I have been raised in what some call a, “Normal Nuclear Family.” We’ve been blessed with health and security. My only experience with cancer is from my aunt Madeline.
My aunt Madeline is a successful nurse, and works in a large hospital in southern Californian. She has what most would consider a secure successful career. That is until she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
After being diagnosed at the very hospital she had worked in for several years, she was placed on a treatment regimen of chemotherapy and radiation. This caused her to miss time from work, and occasionally work many shifts while feeling the effects of her treatment.
She was very diligent and brave during her treatment, but then the insurance troubles came. Her insurance refused to pay for certain recommended treatments. Treatments that were recommended by her colleagues and peers. She depleted all of her saving and was forced to use much of her retirement accounts to pay for what her insurance didn’t cover.
Her inability to work for weeks at a time caused her to loose income, and caused undue stress over mounting everyday living expenses. At one point she feared she would have to sell her home before she reached the point of not being able to pay her mortgage.
All of this stress while undergoing a double mastectomy and scaring radiation treatments. I’ll never forget the horror she and my family felt while she laid on the operating table prepped and ready for a seven am surgery to have her breasts removed. Seven o’clock came, then eight then nine, then noon. Nothing. We then discovered the surgery had been delayed by hours, because the doctors she had worked with for years still needed an approval from her insurance company.
I remember sitting with my father in the waiting room thinking, “If they treat a co-worker like this, I didn’t stand a chance in this hospital.” Would they really refuse her a life saving surgery because her insurer, “Their insurer,” was working through its own red tape. I was saddened to my core from the entire circumstance of my aunt’s situation.
Luckily my aunt received the surgery. She’s currently cancer free, but still recovering from the financial burden of her illness. I learned many lessons from her story, but no lesson stood out to me more than this. Family and friends are all that matter. The relationships and love we have for each other was, and is her only respite.
While banks and insurers coldly avoided their obligations, family stepped up. Financial assistance, meals, help taking care of chores, driving her to appointments when she was too ill to drive herself. It was a valuable lesson I witnessed and was more than happy to take part of. It wasn’t a burden or an obligation, it was just love.
So when I say I am fortunate, that is what I mean. I belong to a family unit. I know there are many forms of family units. I only wish that whatever form of unit people belong to, that the love in it is just as strong and reliable as mine.
