Christian Barham 1/21/2026 My college and career goals are to earn a bachelor’s degree with a focus on architecture and business. I want to incorporate design, problem-solving, and management. I want to create spaces and projects that are functional and reflect individuality and purpose. I see myself working in design or architecture management long term, where I can lead projects, collaborate with others, and bring ideas to life. Out of all licensed architects in the U.S. there are 2% black and I believe I could be a part of that small amount. I am motivated and inspired by my parents. Watching my father work hard and remain consistent in his career has shown me the value of discipline and drive. While I also watch my mother effectively handle her large responsibility and manage her time efficiently in her career which has brought me confidence in my ability to do it like them. Their support motivates me to push myself academically and personally, and it reminds me that success doesn’t happen overnight—it’s built through effort and commitment. Another major influence is my faith in God. Growing up, I felt pressure to fit in and follow the same path as others. As I grew in my faith and developed a deeper relationship with God, my view changed, my motivation was something bigger than me, and my circle changed. I started my own clothing line called “Standing Alone” to inspire everyone who was in the same boat to be leaders and independent thinkers. Designing clothing, creating ideas, and implementing meaning in every fabric piece helped me further understand that I want a career where I can express myself while also making an impact. I also plan to make an impact on others who plan on going into my field by showing them that it is okay to stick out and be different from others. A college education is crucial in helping me reach these goals. College will give me the academic knowledge, business skills, and the hands-on experience to succeed in the design and architecture field. Taking classes in design, business management, and problem-solving will prepare me to handle both the creative and leadership aspects of my future career. College will also expose me to mentors and opportunities that will help shape my growth as a professional. After graduation, I plan to start my career in my hometown. Toledo has a strong creative community and strong leadership, and I would be proud to give back and contribute my skills to the community that helped shape who I am. My ultimate goal is to use my education to build, lead, and inspire.
