James B. McKillip Scholarship for Physical Therapy
It feels like only yesterday, twenty-one years ago, that I faced the daunting task of spelling out my own name on my first day of pre-K. I couldn't read my own name off a sheet of paper if my life depended on it, and now, twenty-one years later, I’m pursuing a career where people's lives depend on me. Although I did not always dream of becoming a healthcare professional, my experiences have led me to embrace physical therapy as my calling.
As the only child and sole U.S. citizen in my family, I grew up with immense pressure to succeed. My parents worked tirelessly to provide for me, instilling in me a strong sense of responsibility. My interest in health blossomed as I began to explore the impact of exercise and nutrition on our physical and mental well-being. I became passionate about promoting fitness and health, even starting my own initiative to encourage a healthier lifestyle. I organized beach cleanups every weekend, aiming to keep our community clean and active while raising awareness about plastic pollution. These experiences deepened my appreciation for health and strengthened my belief in the importance of a caring and empathetic approach.
Despite my growing desire to study health, I initially doubted my ability to pursue this path. I worried about the financial burden it would place on my family, so I chose Finance, hoping for quicker stability. However, this decision negatively impacted my mental and physical health, resulting in feelings of depression and a lack of motivation. Recognizing that I was lost in a field that didn’t resonate with my true passions, I decided to take the risk and pursue a path I could be proud of, even if it meant incurring student loan debt.
Now, a year into the DPT program at FIU and I can confidently say that this has been one of the best decisions and experiences of my life. I am more involved in campus life, participating in intramural sports and working at the campus Wellness and Recreation Center. I have made lifelong friends, fallen in love, and grown immensely as a person thanks to this program. This career path has already given me so much, I believe it is only fair to give back as much as I can.
My passion for physical therapy extends beyond personal fulfillment; I am committed to making a positive contribution to the field. Currently, I am particularly drawn to sports orthopedics. After graduating in 2026, I plan to pursue a residency and deepen my expertise. I am also working toward certifications with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) and intend to acquire further credentials in nutrition and exercise psychology.
I believe that physical therapy is not just about rehabilitation; it’s about fostering a supportive environment that promotes holistic well-being. My experiences have shown me the transformative power of empathy and compassion in healthcare. As I move forward in my career, I aim to embody these values, serving as a role model for future healthcare workers and creating a space where patients feel understood and cared for.
In conclusion, physical therapy is important to me because it aligns with my values of care, empathy, and community engagement. It represents a path where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Through my dedication to this profession, I hope to contribute to a culture of holistic healing and support, inspiring others to lead healthier lives.
Dr. Michael Paglia Scholarship
It feels like only yesterday, twenty-one years ago, when I faced the daunting task of spelling out my name on my first day of pre-K. Back then, I couldn't even read my name off a sheet of paper, and now, I’m pursuing a career where people's lives depend on me. Did I always dream of becoming a healthcare professional? No. My aspirations have evolved over the years, yet each decision and experience has guided me toward physical therapy.
As the only child and sole U.S. citizen in my family, I have always felt immense pressure to succeed. My parents, immigrants who came to America in search of a better life, worked tirelessly to provide for me. Their sacrifices instilled in me a profound sense of responsibility and gratitude. In high school, I excelled as a straight-A student and aspiring athlete, driven not just by passion, but by the desire to uphold my family's expectations. However, balancing my academic load with sports eventually took its toll. I had to drop soccer due to injuries, which shattered my aspirations and left me without direction as college approached.
When it came time to apply for college, my choices narrowed down to applying only to Florida International University (FIU) as a Finance major—a path that neither excited me nor aligned with my true passions. I felt trapped between my desire to remain close to my parents and the need for a career that promised stability. This misalignment of goals significantly impacted my mental health. I was living on autopilot, struggling to maintain a 2.0 GPA while feeling increasingly unmotivated and lost.
Hitting rock bottom forced me to make a crucial decision: stay in that dark place or take the necessary steps to climb back up. After taking a semester off to focus on my well-being, I discovered a newfound passion for physical therapy. Switching my major halfway through my undergraduate studies was a pivotal moment. I dedicated myself to fulfilling all the prerequisites for Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs, transforming my GPA from a 2.2 to a 3.2 and earning a spot on the Dean’s List multiple times.
Graduating with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies was just the beginning. I completed my extracurricular requirements, passed the GRE, and accrued nearly 1,000 observation hours—all in preparation for the DPT class of 2026. Although I hadn’t planned to stay in Miami, I felt an inexplicable connection to FIU’s program. Now, almost a year into the DPT program, I can confidently say that this has been one of the best decisions of my life.
The program has provided not only academic growth but also a sense of belonging. I’ve become more involved in campus life, participating in intramural sports and building lifelong friendships. Falling in love and growing as a person through these experiences has highlighted the importance of relationships in my journey. My passion lies in sports orthopedics, and I plan to pursue a residency in this field after graduating in 2026. I’m already working on getting certified as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, with plans to pursue additional credentials in nutrition and exercise psychology.
My career goal is to become the best physical therapist I can be, providing exceptional care to my patients while serving as a role model for future healthcare professionals. This journey has taught me that self-fulfillment comes from pursuing a path aligned with my values and passions. After completing my DPT program, I hope to foster a loving and caring environment in my personal and professional life.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
I didn’t always envision a career in health care; for much of my life, it wasn’t even a consideration. Growing up as an only child in a low-income household, my parents worked long, strenuous hours. They came to America with the hope of building a better life for me, and the expectations they placed upon me were high. This pressure, coupled with my own mental health struggles, significantly shaped my journey.
As a first-generation student, balancing work, study, and relationships proved to be an immense challenge. My parents worked tirelessly to provide for us, often sacrificing their own well-being for our future. While I felt a deep gratitude for their sacrifices, I also grappled with the fear of not meeting their expectations. I wanted to succeed academically and make them proud, but the weight of that responsibility sometimes felt overwhelming. The fear of disappointing them led to anxiety and periods of depression, making it difficult to focus on my studies or build meaningful relationships.
Initially, I chose to major in Finance, believing it would lead to financial stability for my family. However, I quickly realized that this path was misaligned with my passions. As my mental health deteriorated, I found myself feeling unmotivated and lost in a field that didn’t resonate with me. This experience taught me that success is not solely defined by external expectations but must also align with one’s own values and aspirations. It prompted a reevaluation of my goals and ultimately led me to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy, where I could merge my desire to help others with my interest in health.
Navigating my mental health challenges also transformed my relationships. I learned the importance of vulnerability and open communication. In my darkest moments, I often felt isolated, but opening up to friends and family helped me build deeper connections. I realized that sharing my struggles encouraged others to do the same, creating a supportive environment where we could all grow together. This empathy and understanding have become foundational in my relationships, allowing me to support others facing their own challenges.
In conclusion, my experience with mental health has profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. I transformed my struggles into motivation, choosing a career that aligns with my passions. My relationships have deepened through vulnerability and communication, creating a supportive environment. Finally, my advocacy for mental health awareness reflects my commitment to building a compassionate society. As I move forward, I remain dedicated to helping others navigate their mental health journeys, fostering a world where understanding and empathy prevail.
First-Gen Futures Scholarship
My decision to pursue higher education is deeply rooted in my experiences as the child of immigrant parents who worked tirelessly to build a better life for our family in America. They came here with hope and determination, leaving everything they knew to create opportunities for my future. Growing up as an only child in a low-income household, I witnessed their struggles, working long hours just to provide for us. Living paycheck to paycheck, they often had little time to rest from the physical toll their jobs took on them.
Preparing for college as a first-generation student required resilience and resourcefulness. Finding proper guidance was a challenge, and while the process was daunting, it was the internal battles I faced that were most difficult. I grappled with the weight of choosing a career that would bring me happiness while honoring my family's sacrifices.
Their efforts instilled in me a profound sense of gratitude and responsibility. They provided me with the chance to pursue a life that surpasses anything they could have imagined. I feel a strong obligation to honor their sacrifices by striving to reach my full potential. This journey has led me to set my sights on earning a doctorate in physical therapy, where I can fulfill my aspirations and give back to the community that has supported my family.
I didn’t always envision a career in health care; it wasn’t even a consideration for much of my life. However, my interest in health blossomed as I explored the impact of exercise and nutrition on our well-being. I became passionate about promoting fitness and health, starting initiatives to encourage healthier lifestyles. Organizing beach cleanups every weekend allowed me to engage my community while raising awareness about plastic pollution. These experiences deepened my appreciation for health and reinforced my belief in a caring approach.
As I entered college, my parents continued to struggle, working tirelessly despite their age. Although I felt drawn to study health, I doubted my ability to pursue a career in medicine due to the financial burden it might place on my family. This led me to major in Finance, hoping for a quicker path to stability. However, I soon found that this decision took a toll on my mental health. I felt lost in a field that didn’t resonate with my true passions.
Seeing no desirable future for myself, I decided to take a risk and pursue a path I could be proud of, even if it meant incurring significant student loan debt. After much consideration, I chose to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy. I see this as a hands-on career that emphasizes holistic medicine and offers opportunities for continued education. My goal is to help people feel better physically and mentally through physical therapy and exercise science.
In conclusion, my pursuit of higher education is not just a personal ambition; it’s a commitment to honoring my family's sacrifices and making a positive impact in the lives of others. I am eager to embrace the challenges and opportunities ahead, ready to fulfill my purpose.
