Chris Jackson Computer Science Education Scholarship
Growing up, I was always taught the value of hard work. As a first-generation Mexican-American, my family emphasized perseverance, responsibility, and sacrifice. I didn’t grow up thinking college was an option for me. I only ever knew how to work. That mindset carried me through high school and into the workforce, where I’ve spent the last several years working at Home Depot in various departments, from Garden to Tool Rental. I took pride in stepping up, training others, and improving store performance—even during the COVID-19 pandemic when staffing was low. I never backed down from a challenge, but I still questioned whether higher education was for someone like me.
What changed was watching my friends pursue college degrees and build paths forward. Seeing them grow gave me the spark I needed. I realized that I could do more—not just for myself but for my family and future generations. I wanted to be someone my younger cousins and siblings could look up to. That motivation led me back to school, where I’m now pursuing a degree in Information Technology with a focus on Cybersecurity.
I became interested in cybersecurity because I’ve always been drawn to technology and problem-solving. I love understanding how systems work—and more importantly, how to protect them. With cyber threats becoming more advanced every year, I see cybersecurity as a field where I can make a real difference by keeping data, businesses, and people safe. My dream is to become a cybersecurity analyst or penetration tester, working with organizations to find and patch vulnerabilities before they become threats.
What makes me a strong candidate for this scholarship is my drive, resilience, and work ethic. I’ve balanced full-time work and college, showing up every day even when it’s hard. I don’t take education for granted because I know what it means to fight for an opportunity. I’m not just in school to get a degree—I’m here to build a future. Your support would allow me to focus more on my classes, gain certifications, and graduate with the skills I need to thrive in the tech world. I’m ready to continue working hard and lead by example, proving that even those who didn’t think college was for them can rise and succeed.

Growing up as a first-generation Mexican-American, I was always taught the value of hard work. From a young age, I understood that nothing would be handed to me — and I’ve carried that mindset into everything I do. My family taught me that working hard was how we survive, how we push forward, and how we take care of each other. Because of that, I’ve always known how to work — but for a long time, I didn’t believe college was for someone like me.
After high school, I started working full-time and focused on helping support my family. I didn’t think higher education was within reach. But as I watched my friends go off to college and chase their dreams, I began to ask myself: why not me? Seeing them move forward lit something inside me. It made me realize I could be more than just someone who works hard — I could also be someone who leads. I wanted to set an example for my younger siblings, cousins, and future generations. I wanted to be the one who showed that a different path is possible — even if it’s not the one we were raised to expect.
That realization drove me to enroll in school and pursue a degree in Information Technology with a focus on Cybersecurity. Since then, I’ve continued working full-time at The Home Depot while attending school. Over the past five years, I’ve worked my way through multiple departments and roles — from overnight freight and garden to flooring, lumber, and now tool rental, where I currently serve as the lead associate. I’ve earned over a dozen Homer Awards for my performance, stepped up to train new hires, led overnight resets, and boosted tool sales with my initiative. Everything I’ve achieved at Home Depot has been the result of grit, self-motivation, and a desire to go above and beyond — even when no one’s watching.
Now, I’m bringing that same energy and dedication into my education. As a first-generation student, I’ve had to learn how to navigate everything — from FAFSA and class schedules to scholarship applications — on my own. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m determined to keep moving forward. I’m passionate about cybersecurity not just because it’s a growing and exciting field, but because I want to help protect people, especially communities like mine, in a digital world that’s always changing.
Being a first-generation Mexican-American college student means turning hard work into opportunity. It means showing my family — and myself — that we are capable of more. I want to be the first to walk across that stage, not just to earn a degree, but to prove that our story doesn’t end with struggle. It continues with growth, leadership, and hope for the next generation. This scholarship would help me continue my journey without being held back financially, and bring me one step closer to the life I’ve worked so hard to build.
