Over the years, I've been to many schools. Throughout all that time moving and traveling, I had always had many different interests and hobbies. I had always stuck with all forms of art, reading, and playing with programs and software on the computer. My parents always encouraged me to build on my hobbies and follow my dreams, but they did not have the resources to support them. I had lost interest in all my hobbies in high school and truly believed that I had lost all my creativity and intelligence. I did not know what I wanted to do with my life as junior and senior years came by. I still did not have the support I needed or wanted to push me further. I had no interest in going to a university, but I applied anyway. I decided to attend James Madison University. As a first-generation college student, I chose to attend JMU so I could fulfill my duties and dreams. The excitement was there, but I had a difficult time the moment I set foot on campus. I started as a nursing major, doing whatever others told me to do, and began failing some of the pre-requisites for nursing. I discovered it was not the path I wanted to take. I spoke to many advisors trying to figure out what was best for me. I transitioned from nursing to computer science to health services. I finally decided on psychology by the summer before my junior year. Despite finding a major that suited me, I fought a constant mental battle for months. I took time off for the Spring 2021 semester to improve my mental health. My GPA and grades suffered as a result of my mental health. In the fall of 2020, I had not attended any of my classes for long periods and missed out on schoolwork because I was so depressed. In February of 2021, my roommates admitted me into the hospital after a failed suicide attempt, which helped me realize that school was not my priority—getting better was. After some time, I decided to go back to JMU, thinking I was mentally fit. I was admitted to the hospital again after Winter Break in 2021, influencing my decision to leave JMU. A couple of months went by, and I could not stand being idle at home. I took the time to revisit my past interests. I spent time doing small crafts, working on graphics, reading more, journaling, and exploring the tech field. It was a constant struggle to decide how I could break into the industry. Upon further research, I discovered the perfect career: user experience design. It involves organization, psychology, creativity, and improving lives through technology. Eventually, I decided to return to school but did not find any undergraduate degrees based on user experience design, so I was discouraged. I searched through different undergraduate online programs and decided to apply to Liberty's program to finish my Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. Soon, it became apparent that this was not the school or the program for me. The plan was to complete my psychology degree though my heart disagrees. Psychology will always be an interest of mine. Ideally, I want to work in graphics and user experience design instead. I feel that I belong to a different school, pursuing a major that aligns with my interests, passions, and values. I went back online to do some extensive research. I remember my younger sister applied to the illustrious North Carolina A & T University, one of her dream schools. My sister speaks highly of the university, leading me to consider it. Psychology is not the path I want to embark on when I attend A & T. I read through all the technology and computer degrees, but they were not what I wanted. I then searched graphic design and user experience, discovering the Computer Graphics Technology program with a concentration in User Experience. I quickly applied. People never stop learning in this field. I plan to apply my growing knowledge to my work as a user experience designer and hopefully teach young black girls all the things I have learned in the technology and design field and continue to learn as I go. More women belong in the technology field, especially black women. I intend to become a trailblazing figure in user experience and technology. My time to explore is now. I cannot wait to see what the future holds.
