Growing up, "home" was not a sanctuary; it was a place where I learned to interpret tones of voices and recognize heavy-treaded footsteps. For years my life was defined by unpredictable cycles of my stepfather's alcoholism and the subsequent abuse that shadowed my mother. Navigating junior high/high school while managing the emotional weight of an unstable home environment felt like trying to run a race underwater. However, these experiences did not break me or my spirit but instead gave me a drive to build a stable, successful future.
The turning point came when my mother and I finally gained the courage to leave, my freshman year. Transitioning into a household with just my single mother brought its own set of challenges, more specifically financial instability. I wish I could say my mother had much resilience and worked multiple jobs to support us, but in all reality that isn't what happened. I saw her fall; this bright, hardworking, kind-hearted mother I thought I knew was gone. She had fallen into a deep depression; this lasted for months, and in all honesty, I fell with her. I let my focus shift from school and work to taking care of her, making sure that she was ok. She slowly started to become better; she got an actual job and started working every day. so we could afford to live. My mother did teach me resilience, just in different ways; she taught me that the trauma of my past does not dictate my future, and it should be used as fuel.
My ambition is rooted in the belief that no child or parent should feel as powerless as I and my mother once did. I plan to pursue a degree in biology and become a forensic technician after college, focusing on helping families in crisis. I want to advocate for adults and children sitting at their desks hiding the same anxieties that I once carried. By understanding the intersection of substance abuse and domestic instability firsthand, I can offer a level of empathy in my future career, a drive that pushes me to help those in need.
This scholarship would drastically alleviate the financial burden on my mother and me, allowing me to focus entirely on my goal of correcting injustice in the world today like Mark D. Schwarck, just in different ways. I have already overcome the greatest barrier in my life by escaping an abusive cycle; I am now ready to use that hard-earned strength to ensure that others can do the same. I am the creator of a future committed to service, motivated by the desire to use my own personal hardship to benefit the community.
