In a typical African household, the first child is considered the leader of the children to a successful future. Being the first of 6 kids, 5 of which are females with only one male, the ability to decipher what pathway for my siblings rests on mine; whether the path of success or that of failure. Funny as it sounds, it is an untold responsibility. Fortunately for me, I have so far been able to live an exemplary life for my siblings. Graduating high school as the overall best student and Senior prefect is enough evidence to push them to do well academically. Regardless, I cannot overemphasize the role my parents played in my life during high school. The mindset of not settling for less was already instilled whilst in my 7th grade. I remember vividly returning from school one fateful day after the annual student award list was posted, ran home to show my mum my award of best student in English Language. She looked at it and said, "what about the best student in mathematics? Why didn't you get that? ". Heartbroken and devastated, I went to my room with the thought that I could not please my mother. Later that day, my dad heard of the award and brought a bottle of sweet wine to my room to make a toast to my achievement. Moving forward and rounding up the next academic year, the usual award list was posted. This time, I came home with the awards of best student in English language and Mathematics. My mother congratulated me meanwhile my dad took me out to celebrate with my siblings, teaching them to learn from my success. As other years came by, the zeal to please my mother piloted my desire to become an exceptional student. I would always make sure to come back home with a more better result each year; thus graduating with the overall best student award. While growing, parents in the society had a mindset: a child can succeed and make the society proud if only they study medicine or any health related course. Therefore, my mum had already predestined my future as being a medical career. However, by my last year in high school, I decided within me that I only want to study a tech career. The world is increasingly getting digitalized and it is no lie that an average person can see that in a few years from now, the earth will become a global community, or at least that is what I see. The quest to attain the best level of knowledge in the tech field made me realize I need to study abroad. The United States is known to be the leader in computer and cybersecurity research; my dad supported the idea while my mother reluctantly went with it despite her disinterest. A year after high school graduation, I was able to get an admission into Jacksonville University and after succeeding in the visa interview, my father made it his absolute goal to ensure I left immediately. As much as he strives to pay for my fees, the Nigerian economy is not making it any easier. Exchange rate between dollar and my country's currency- naira, continues to rise daily. Presently, a dollar is equivalent to 1500 naira, thus increasing the financial difficulty to pay for my tuition. Having 5 other siblings to cater for, a lot of pressure has been place on my father's shoulders, hence I sort out to applying for different scholarship to help savage the situation for my family. I really hope we find a way.
