    Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Moving to the United States in 2017 brought a whirlwind of cultural transitions, language barriers, and academic anxiety. My lowest point arrived during my first days at Portland Community College when I took the ALEKS math placement test. I failed to get into the college-level course I needed and was instead placed into Math 58, a pre-college developmental class. It was a deeply discouraging moment that made numbers feel like an alien language I was entirely unequipped to speak. However, I refused to let that test score define my potential, committing myself to hours of grueling study to build my skills from the ground up. My trajectory completely shifted when I entered Professor Thomas Songer's statistics classroom at PCC. He was an instructor I will never forget. Professor Songer did not treat math as an intimidating wall of formulas, but as a practical lens for decoding real-world data and public health trends. For the first time, I realized math was a universal language of logic. Even when my English vocabulary failed me during my first years in the States, the objective nature of data remained consistent. This classroom transformed my academic struggle into a genuine fascination with evidence-based science. Now that I have transferred to Pacific University to pursue my bachelor’s degree in dental Hygiene, I use the resilience and analytical skills I forged at PCC every single day. Dental hygiene is deeply rooted in mathematics and clinical data. To provide safe, accurate patient care, I must calculate precise pharmaceutical dosages, evaluate periodontal indices, and critically analyze dental research to track oral disease progression. Because of the foundation I built starting from Math 58, I no longer view clinical data with fear; I see it as a vital tool to improve healthcare outcomes. Overcoming my math anxiety taught me that intelligence is not fixed; it is forged through grit. I do not love math because it comes easily to me; I love it because I fought hard to master it, and it unlocked my path to healthcare. This scholarship will support my education at Pacific University, lessening my financial burden so I can focus entirely on becoming a skilled dental hygienist. I started at the very bottom of the mathematics ladder, but I am ready to bring that same unstoppable resilience to my future patients.
    Bright Lights Scholarship
The first time I truly understood the impact of dental hygiene was not in a classroom, but in a dental chair. When I moved from Nigeria to the United States at the age of 14, I visited a dentist and dental hygienist for the first time. Oral healthcare had not been widely emphasized in my community, and I had limited understanding of preventive care. During that visit, I experienced something I had never associated with healthcare before compassion, patience, and dignity. That moment reshaped my perspective and sparked my passion for dental hygiene. As someone from a background where oral health education is limited, I understand how easily patients can feel anxious, uninformed, or overlooked in a clinical setting. I am especially passionate about preventive care and patient education because I believe they are key to improving long-term oral and overall health. My goal is to become a dental hygienist who not only provides clinical excellence but also builds trust and empowers patients, particularly in underserved communities. My commitment to this field is reflected in both my academic and professional achievements. I have maintained Dean’s List or higher academic standing for two consecutive years while completing my Associate of Science degree. At the same time, I have worked as an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant, gaining hands-on experience in patient care, dental procedures, and clinical teamwork. Balancing rigorous academics with clinical work has strengthened my discipline, time management, and dedication to the dental profession. Financial preparedness plays a critical role in achieving educational and professional success. Pursuing a career in healthcare requires significant investment in tuition, books, and clinical training, often creating financial barriers that can limit focus and opportunity. While I have worked diligently to support my education, the financial demands of my program remain challenging. Receiving the Bright Lights Scholarship would reduce this burden and allow me to fully concentrate on my studies, clinical training, and professional development. Growing up in a single-parent household also shaped my resilience, responsibility, and determination. Watching my mother work tirelessly to provide for our family motivated me to stay committed to my education and pursue a career where I can make a meaningful impact in people’s lives. In the future, I hope to give back by promoting oral health education, volunteering in community dental clinics, and mentoring students from similar backgrounds. I am committed to using my education and clinical experience to improve access to care and ensure patients feel seen, supported, and empowered in their oral health journey. This scholarship would not only support my education, it would invest in my ability to serve others with skill, compassion, and purpose.

Migrating from Nigeria to the United States brings a unique set of structural, cultural, and financial hurdles that rewrite a family’s entire trajectory. For my family, this transition was defined by a profound sense of uprooting, economic strain, and an overwhelming pressure to adapt to an entirely unfamiliar society. However, the greatest challenge we faced during this migratory journey was navigating the catastrophic loss of my mother when I was a child. Experiencing a sudden family tragedy while simultaneously trying to establish a foothold in a new country magnified our vulnerability, but it also became the crucible that shaped my resilience, my faith, and my ultimate dedication to public service. In the wake of my mother’s passing, our family was forced to confront intense emotional grief alongside the harsh, practical realities facing African immigrants. Without the broad, traditional familial network we would have had back home in Nigeria to rely on, the isolation felt total. It was during this fragile period that our local Roman Catholic church community stepped in, serving as an indispensable safety net. The unconditional care, financial support, and communal grace we received from fellow parish members taught me the true meaning of solidarity. Experiencing this profound collective kindness at a young age instilled in me a deep desire to pay it forward. Instead of allowing grief and structural displacement to break my spirit, my faith taught me to channel these hardships into a lifelong mission to support other vulnerable individuals navigating their own dark seasons. This desire to serve was further focused and refined by the guidance of my aunt, a Roman Catholic nun who is also a medical doctor. Watching her harmoniously balance her religious vows with a demanding career in medicine completely redefined my understanding of community outreach within the immigrant diaspora. She showed me that healthcare is one of the highest forms of secular ministry, especially for underserved communities who face steep cultural and language barriers when trying to access care. Inspired by her legacy, I actively sought out church sponsored health initiatives, which ultimately solidified my decision to pursue higher education in the field of dental hygiene. The challenges of our immigration journey have directly shaped how I approach my future career as a dental hygienist. I do not see dental hygiene as a purely technical field, but as a service-oriented calling where I can treat every patient with deep respect, patience, and compassion. Through church outreach to low income and elderly immigrant populations, I have seen firsthand how common it is for vulnerable individuals to feel anxious, invisible, or misunderstood in traditional healthcare settings. My lived experiences have taught me how to listen deeply, extend patience, and provide reassurance to those in distress. Ultimately, my family's journey from Nigeria to the United States has transformed my perspective on personal achievement. It has taught me that the education and clinical skills I acquire are not meant for my benefit alone, but are tools to uplift the community that sustained us. By anchoring my healthcare ambitions in the foundational values of resilience and faith forged through our immigration experience, I will ensure that my life's work is always dedicated to treating others with absolute dignity, integrity, and grace.

My Involvement in my local Roman Catholic church has been the single greatest catalyst for my commitment to community service. Growing up in the church, I was taught that faith is not a passive or private experience; rather, it is a living duty that must be expressed through action, empathy, and active stewardship for those around us. The challenges of our immigration journey have directly shaped how I approach my future career as a dental hygienist. I do not see dental hygiene as a purely technical field, but as a service oriented calling where I can treat every patient with deep respect, patience, and compassion. Through church outreach to low-income and elderly immigrant populations, I have seen firsthand how common it is for vulnerable individuals to feel anxious, invisible, or misunderstood in traditional healthcare settings.

Pursuing a career in healthcare requires significant investment in tuition, books, and clinical training, often creating financial barriers that can limit focus and opportunity. While I have worked diligently to support my education, the financial demands of my program remain challenging. Receiving the Megan Mills Scholarship would reduce this burden and allow me to fully concentrate on my studies, clinical training, and professional development.

My involvement in my local Roman Catholic church has been the single greatest catalyst for my commitment to community service. Growing up in the church, I was taught that faith is not a passive or private experience; rather, it is a living duty that must be expressed through action, empathy, and active stewardship for those around us. By participating in parish ministries and community outreach programs, I have learned to translate the spiritual principles of compassion and solidarity into tangible, life changing support for my neighbors. The true depth of my church community’s impact became clear during the most painful chapter of my life the passing of my mother when I was a child. In the wake of that devastating loss, our local parish did not just offer prayers; they provided a physical and emotional safety net for my family. The unconditional support, meals, and care we received from church members taught me a profound lesson about the true meaning of community. Experiencing that level of grace firsthand at a vulnerable age instilled in me a lifelong desire to pay that kindness forward. My involvement in church service quickly became a way to channel my personal grief into a purposeful mission to uplift others who are walking through their own dark seasons. This desire to serve was further focused and refined by the guidance of my aunt, a Roman Catholic nun who is also a medical doctor. Watching her harmoniously balance her deep religious vows with a demanding career in medicine completely redefined my understanding of community outreach. She showed me that healthcare is one of the highest forms of secular ministry. Through her example, I realized that treating a person's physical needs is intrinsically tied to honoring their inherent dignity. Inspired by her legacy, I actively sought out church-sponsored health fairs and volunteer initiatives, which ultimately solidified my decision to pursue higher education in the field of dental hygiene. My church involvement has directly shaped how I approach my future career as a dental hygienist, viewing it through the lens of a service oriented calling rather than just a technical profession. Through parish outreach to underserved families and the elderly, I have witnessed how common it is for vulnerable populations to feel anxious, invisible, or overlooked in traditional healthcare settings. My time volunteering within the church has taught me how to listen deeply, extend patience, and provide reassurance to those in distress. When I enter the dental clinic, I carry these exact values with me, striving to create an environment where every patient feels genuinely safe, heard, and respected. Ultimately, my active participation in my local church has transformed my perspective on personal and academic achievement. It has taught me that the education and skills I acquire are not meant for my benefit alone, but are tools to be leveraged for the greater good of my community. By anchoring my clinical ambitions in the foundational values of my faith, my church involvement has ensured that my life's work will always be dedicated to treating others with absolute compassion, integrity, and grace.

Growing up in an immigrant, single-mother household taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of caring for others long before I chose a career in healthcare. As the child of a single mother, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices required to create a better future. Watching my mother balance responsibilities while still providing love and support taught me the value of perseverance and hard work. Instead of allowing challenges to discourage me, I learned to use them as motivation. Pursuing dental hygiene is meaningful to me because it represents stability, independence, and the opportunity to help others feel confident and cared for. My immigrant background also gives me a unique understanding of diversity and communication. Growing up between cultures taught me how to adapt to different environments and empathize with people from many walks of life. In healthcare, especially dental hygiene, patients often feel nervous, misunderstood, or uncomfortable. I believe my experiences help me create a sense of trust and comfort because I know what it feels like to feel unheard or out of place. I want patients to feel respected, safe, and genuinely cared for when they sit in my chair. My personal experiences taught me the importance of compassion, patience, and human connection, qualities that cannot always be learned in a classroom. Although my journey has included financial struggles, pressure, and uncertainty, those experiences made me stronger and more appreciative of every opportunity I have today. Rather than defining me negatively, my background became the reason I push myself to succeed. What truly makes me stand out is that I carry resilience, cultural understanding, and compassion into everything I do, and those qualities will continue to shape the kind of dental hygienist and person I hope to become

Faith has played a steady and grounding role in my life, especially during moments of uncertainty and loss. As someone raised in a Roman Catholic background, I have learned to see faith not only as a belief system, but as a source of discipline, hope, and direction. It has shaped how I handle challenges, how I approach my education, and how I envision my future career in healthcare. One of the most defining experiences of my life was losing my mother when I was a child. That loss changed everything for me emotionally and practically, but it also deepened my understanding of resilience at a very young age. In that period of my life, faith became something I leaned on when I could not rely on my own understanding of what was happening. It gave me a sense of stability when everything around me felt uncertain. Over time, it taught me that hardship does not mean the absence of purpose, and that even painful experiences can shape strength and direction. My aunt, who is a Roman Catholic nun and also a medical doctor, has been one of the most important influences in my life. She has supported me academically, emotionally, and spiritually, especially after my mother’s passing. Watching her balance her religious calling with a career in medicine showed me that service can take many forms, but at its core it is always about helping others with compassion and integrity. Her example made the idea of working in healthcare feel both meaningful and attainable. She did not just encourage me to pursue higher education; she showed me what it looks like to dedicate your life to it. Because of her guidance, I developed a strong interest in healthcare and ultimately chose to pursue dental hygiene. She helped me understand that healthcare professionals do more than treat physical conditions—they also provide comfort, education, and reassurance to people during vulnerable moments. That perspective has shaped how I view my future career. I do not see dental hygiene as just a technical field, but as a service-oriented profession where I can make a real difference in people’s lives. Faith has also influenced my academic journey by teaching me discipline and perseverance. There have been times when balancing school, personal responsibilities, and emotional challenges felt overwhelming. In those moments, my faith reminded me to stay grounded and focused on long-term goals rather than temporary setbacks. It encouraged me to keep going even when progress felt slow, and to trust that my efforts were leading me somewhere meaningful. Looking ahead, I want to carry both my faith and my family’s influence into my professional life. As a future dental hygienist, I hope to treat every patient with respect, patience, and compassion. I want to create an environment where people feel safe, heard, and cared for, especially those who may feel anxious or overlooked in healthcare settings. My goal is not only to succeed academically and professionally, but also to serve others in a way that reflects the values I was raised with. It is more than a personal accomplishment; it is the foundation that will allow me to transform my experiences, values, and determination into a professional career in healthcare. As an immigrant raised in a single-mother household, I learned early that success requires sacrifice, discipline, and perseverance. My mother worked tirelessly to provide stability and opportunity for our family, and her strength continues to motivate me. Higher education allows me to honor her sacrifices by turning them into progress. Through my dental hygiene program, I will gain the scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and hands-on experience needed to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care to patients. In the future, I hope to become a dental hygienist who not only treats oral health issues but also helps prevent them through education and awareness. Higher education will teach me how to understand complex health concepts and communicate them in ways that patients can easily understand. This is especially important to me because I know how intimidating healthcare environments can feel, particularly for individuals who face language barriers, financial challenges, or limited access to care. I want to be the kind of professional who creates comfort, trust, and understanding in those moments. My background also gives me a unique perspective that I plan to carry into my career. Growing up in an immigrant household taught me how to adapt, listen, and respect different cultures and experiences. These qualities are important in healthcare, where patients come from diverse backgrounds and need care that is respectful and personalized. Higher education will strengthen my ability to connect with patients and provide care that acknowledges their individual needs. Beyond clinical skills, higher education will also help me grow professionally and personally. It will teach me responsibility, time management, teamwork, and ethical decision-making—skills that are essential in any healthcare setting. Most importantly, it will give me the confidence to believe in my ability to succeed in a demanding field. Ultimately, I want to use my education to give back. I hope to serve communities that face barriers to dental care and help improve overall health outcomes through prevention and education. Becoming a dental hygienist is not just a career goal for me; it is a way to make a lasting difference in people’s lives. Higher education is the pathway that will allow me to turn my challenges into strength and my goals into impact.

Patricia Lindsey Jackson Foundation - Eva Mae Jackson Scholarship of Education
Ultimately, faith, family, and lived experience have all shaped my path toward higher education. They have taught me that my journey is not just about personal achievement, but about using my education and career to uplift others. Instagram: nemehh.h and nemeh.yogini TikTok: nemereadss

    Charles B. Brazelton Memorial Scholarship
What makes me stand out is not just that I am studying dental hygiene, but the perspective and compassion I bring because of my background. Growing up in an immigrant, single-mother household taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of caring for others long before I chose a career in healthcare. My experiences shaped me into someone who understands struggle personally, which allows me to connect with people on a deeper level. One reason I believe I stand out is my ability to remain determined despite obstacles. Another quality that makes me stand out is my ability to balance ambition with empathy. Many people pursue careers for success alone, but my motivation comes from wanting to make a meaningful difference. Dental hygiene is not only about cleaning teeth; it is about educating patients, improving their confidence, and contributing to their overall health. What truly makes me stand out is that I carry resilience, cultural understanding, and compassion into everything I do, and those qualities will continue to shape the kind of dental hygienist and person I hope to become.
    Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
As an immigrant raised in a single-mother household while pursuing a degree in dental hygiene, Olivia Rodrigo’s music resonates with me because her lyrics capture the emotional struggles of growing up under pressure, overcoming insecurity, and learning to believe in yourself despite challenges. Her songs reflect both vulnerability and resilience, which mirrors many parts of my personal journey. One lyric that stands out to me is from brutal: > “I’m so sick of seventeen.” Although Olivia Rodrigo wrote this lyric about the frustrations and confusion of being young, it reflects the emotional exhaustion that can come from carrying responsibilities at an early age. Growing up in a single-mother household taught me that life was not always easy. Watching my mother work hard to provide stability for our family inspired me, but it also made me aware of sacrifice and struggle very early in life. As immigrants, we faced challenges that many people around us did not fully understand, including financial stress, adapting to a new culture, and trying to create opportunities for a better future. Like the lyric suggests, there were moments where growing up felt overwhelming because I constantly worried about succeeding not only for myself, but also for my family. Another lyric that connects to my journey comes from vampire: > “You sold me for parts.” To me, this lyric symbolizes moments of feeling underestimated or taken advantage of. As an immigrant student, there were times when I felt invisible or doubted my own abilities because of language barriers, cultural differences, or financial limitations. Pursuing dental hygiene has required discipline, confidence, and perseverance. The program is demanding academically and emotionally, and there have been moments where I questioned whether I was capable of reaching my goals. However, those challenges strengthened my determination to prove to myself that my background does not limit my future. Olivia Rodrigo’s music also reflects the importance of resilience. In teenage dream, she expresses fears about not being enough and the pressure to continue succeeding. That feeling resonates deeply with me because pursuing higher education as the child of a single mother carries both pride and pressure. I want my success to honor the sacrifices my mother made for me. Studying dental hygiene represents more than a career choice; it represents stability, independence, and the opportunity to give back to my family and community. Even when I feel stressed or uncertain, I remind myself how far I have already come. What makes Olivia Rodrigo’s lyrics meaningful is their honesty. She speaks openly about insecurity, fear, and growth, which makes listeners feel understood. My journey has not been perfect or easy, but it has taught me resilience, empathy, and determination. Like many of Olivia Rodrigo’s songs, my story is about overcoming challenges while continuing to grow into a stronger version of myself.
    Kayla Nicole Monk Memorial Scholarship
I chose to study dental hygiene because of a personal experience that changed the way I viewed oral healthcare. When I moved from Nigeria to America at the age of 14, I visited a dentist and dental hygienist for the first time. Before coming to the United States, oral healthcare was not emphasized as much in my community, and I did not fully understand the importance of preventive dental care. During my visit, the dentist and hygienist treated me with compassion, patience, and kindness, which made me feel comfortable and cared for. That positive experience inspired me to pursue a career in dental hygiene so I can provide the same level of care and encouragement to others. As someone who comes from a background where oral health education is limited, I understand how important it is to make patients feel welcomed and informed. Many people may feel nervous, embarrassed, or unaware of how to properly care for their oral health. I want to become a dental hygienist who not only helps patients improve their oral health but also creates a positive and supportive environment where they feel respected and understood. My goal is to educate individuals and families about the importance of oral care and help make dental healthcare more accessible in underserved communities. Growing up in a single-parent household also shaped my educational journey and taught me resilience, responsibility, and determination. Watching my mother work hard to provide for our family motivated me to stay focused on my education and pursue a career where I can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Although there have been financial and personal challenges, those experiences strengthened my work ethic and inspired me to continue striving toward my goals. Receiving the Kayla Nicole Monk Memorial Scholarship would make a significant difference in my educational journey. This scholarship would help ease the financial burden of tuition, books, and other educational expenses, allowing me to focus more on my studies and clinical training. It would also encourage me to continue pursuing my passion for helping others through dental hygiene. In the future, I hope to give back to my community by promoting oral health awareness, volunteering at community clinics, and mentoring young students who come from backgrounds similar to mine. I want to use my education and experiences to make others feel seen, supported, and cared for, just as I did when I first visited a dental office in America.

Growing up in a single-parent household has had a major impact on my educational journey and on the person I am becoming today. Watching my mother work hard every day to provide for our family taught me valuable lessons about responsibility, sacrifice, and perseverance. Although there were many challenges along the way, those experiences motivated me to work harder in school and stay focused on my goals. I understood at a young age that education could open doors to opportunities and create a better future for both myself and my family. Being raised by a single mother was not always easy. There were times when finances were limited, and my mother had to balance work, household responsibilities, and parenting all at once. Seeing those struggles made me appreciate everything that was provided for me, even the small things that others may take for granted. It also taught me to become independent and mature early in life. I learned how to manage my time, complete my schoolwork responsibly, and help out at home whenever possible. These experiences helped me develop a strong work ethic, determination, and problem-solving skills that continue to guide me today. Despite the difficulties, my mother always encouraged me to stay committed to my education and never give up on my dreams. Her strength inspired me to keep pushing forward, even during stressful or discouraging moments. Instead of allowing obstacles to hold me back, I used them as motivation to succeed academically and prove that my circumstances would not define my future. Through hard work and persistence, I have learned the importance of resilience and maintaining a positive mindset. In the future, I plan to give back to my community by helping students who may be facing struggles similar to my own. I want to mentor young people, especially those from single-parent households, and encourage them to believe in themselves and their abilities. I hope to volunteer in educational programs, tutor students, and participate in community outreach activities that support families in need. I also want to use my education and future career to create opportunities for others and make a positive impact in my community. My experiences growing up in a single-parent household have shaped my values, strengthened my character, and motivated me to pursue success. They have taught me the importance of perseverance, compassion, and giving back to others. I believe that challenges can build strength, and I hope to use the lessons I have learned to inspire and support others in the future.
