Bio

My name is Chika-Ezeagu Victor. I am an Art major at Stockton University who grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. Ever since I was a kid, I've admired art and animation. After my time at Stockton plan to be an established illustrator and storyteller, just like Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. I plan to start something as big as the companies they started. They’ve been one of my most significant sources of inspiration, just like those close to me. I believe that achieving that dream would be my way of supporting my family and giving back to the community that helped me, especially as an international student. I also think it would be a nice change of pace for African Americans. Its always been my desire to study arts here in the US because art skills are more valued here than back home. I strongly believe in what I plan to do, and I hope to get external help to reach my goals.

My name is Chika-Ezeagu Victor. I am an Art major who grew up in Nigeria. Ever since childhood, I've admired art, animation, and the fantastic worlds the storytellers built. I grew up watching animations in Western media and reading American comic books, especially Marvel comic books. I've always been a fan of the arts in America. Some of my biggest inspirations have been Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Masashi Kishimoto, who created Naruto. Its always been my desire to study arts here in the US due to the value it has here in the States. I believe in the power of storytelling. Regardless of where one finds themselves in any part of the world, storytelling and the art of storytelling resonate with people. I seek to give artists a chance to tell their stories without feeling shortchanged or cheated out of their value. Everyone deserves to tell their stories the way they want to. To freely express themselves and let the world see the idea they feel is worth showing. I want to be a storyteller and illustrator that would create a platform where artists can see themselves put out their content without being shortchanged for their value. I believe in cultural diversity for art. I am a fan of varying cultures around the world, with countries such as Mongolia, Ethiopia, and even Mexico being on my list for having so many beautiful cultural attires and lore. With sincerity, I can achieve this dream of mine which translates to helping artists achieve theirs. Everyone needs to stand for something; this is a noble cause worth standing for. This scholarship would help me pursue my goal of being an established artist. I would no longer be uneasy in class thinking of the payment deadline for the month. I would no longer be uneasy. Knowing the reduced payment burden would help me focus better in class. It would lead to a better improvement in my grades. I grew up watching animations in Western media and reading American comic books, especially Marvel comic books. One of my biggest inspirations would have to be my brother and my mum. He studied art at the university as well. He always guided me as a growing artist and made necessary corrections to my art as I grew up, and as for my mum, she inspired me in terms of her resilience and hardworking spirit. She always pushed me to go beyond my limits, grow and evolve into a better version of myself as an artist and an individual. I’m also a fan of the arts in America. Some of my biggest inspirations have been Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Masashi Kishimoto, who created Naruto. I excel in these fields and am confident in my ability as an artist.

    Verve Arts Scholarship
My favorite artwork is Stable Horizon(the white-haired boy), which reflects my mental space as of the beginning of the year. I tried to capture a calm, serene feeling with this piece. I used a character from one of my favorite video games to represent the feeling of serenity, calmness, and rest. A significant creative choice I made while doing this artwork was using harsh lines instead of clean lines to portray the feeling of rest. The character portrayed is engulfed by a mild wind, giving the illustration a sense of direction. I made this choice due to the insane circumstances I found myself in at the beginning of the year 2023, as I had to struggle to adjust to a new environment as an international student. However, despite the many issues, I recognized that peace can still be found even amidst the chaos. I don't believe peace is found from the outside; I believe it is located within. Even if everything surrounding a person seems turbulent, true peace is attained when one is at rest with himself. For the choice of colors, I used really bright colors to give the illustration a positive and much more vibrant feeling. I used bright colors and a daytime setting to emphasize clarity and exposure for the scene and setting. I also set the giant cloud right behind him to create a feeling of isolation for the character. The leaves were added for a stronger sense of direction in the illustration. I also chose to use darker colors for the foreground to create more emphasis and lighter colors for the background to create less emphasis for it. I tried to give the illustration a lot of texture for aesthetics but also to give off the feeling of unrest. This artwork is a means through which I could pour out my state of mind during that particular point in time. This artwork was my favorite due to how deeply I was able to resonate with the character and the message. As an international student coming to the US at the time, it was very stressful for me, and I had to deal with many burdens of expectation, personal work, culture shock, and even my studies. At a point, I felt very overwhelmed and disoriented, even to the point that I developed mild anxiety. But through this piece, I was able to express what would have been challenging to put into words. Through this piece, I was able to pour out this mountain of emotions I had as a burden. Through this piece, I was able to achieve my own form of rest through the heat of the experience; even though it was short-lived, it was still an experience I would have close to me for a long time.
