From a tender age, I listened to the latest political news my grandmother would watch as she babysat me. From the crack of dawn, as I ate my morning cereal, to the hush of nighttime prayers, the same news stories would repeat throughout my days. I can still hear my grandmother's voice, with her Jamaican twang, yelling, "What's this foolishness?!" in response to presidential candidates, BIPOC injustice, and political issues in general. These early experiences molded me into a young person already well-versed in political discourse. I would stand on stools while eagerly preaching the latest political news to anyone who would listen. It sparked a newfound obsession in me to fully understand the intricacies of the political and legal systems and uncover the purpose behind all that yelling. Making a positive difference in the world, especially in the legal system, has always been a driving force. The desire to uphold justice and ensure fairness drove me to pursue a law degree. As a legal assistant, I was fortunate to witness firsthand the power of the law to protect the rights of individuals and the greater good. These encounters only fueled my desire to contribute meaningfully to society through the legal profession. My interest in the intersection of law and public policy grew as my studies progressed. I was fascinated by how legal frameworks could promote social and economic development, protect the environment, and ensure the sustainability of our natural resources. The opportunity to engage in critical thinking and analysis is one of the most exciting aspects of studying law. New legal issues and challenges arise constantly. There's always something new to learn and discover, whether interpreting a specific statute or arguing a case in court. My law degree is a tool that will allow me to have an advantageous effect on humanity. I advocate for the marginalized to make society more just and equitable. However, I strongly support our system's values, including constitutional rights. These safeguards protect the American way of life and serve as a global example of liberty and democracy, but our democracy's pillars are not always perfectly aligned. While I remain committed to upholding the values of our democracy, I recognize that our legal system is not perfect. Many issues need to be addressed, such as the over-incarceration of BIPOC individuals, systemic racism in the legal system, and access to justice for marginalized communities. As a legal professional, I am committed to addressing these issues head-on and working to create a more fair society for all. My passion for the law stems from a desire to create positive change in the world. I am committed to using my legal education to advocate for justice, fairness, and equality for all and to engage with public policy to shape laws and policies that promote these values. International law provides numerous opportunities to fight for civil rights by advancing principles and protections.
