I was born on November 6, 2006. On that day, NASA took a picture of "The Ghostly Tail of Comet SWAN". When I see that picture, I think of a beautiful comet soaring through endless and infinite space, shining and glistening so brightly and elegantly. It's seen as ghostly because of its ion tail, which is made of ionized gas, energized by ultraviolet light from the Sun, and pushed outward by the solar wind. My goal in life is to be like the ghostly tail of comet SWAN because it absorbs so much light from the Sun, and I would like to absorb education, happiness, and love throughout my life.
I've always wanted to work at NASA because I have always been interested in space, stars, and technology, and that is what NASA is all about! NASA is the world's leading space agency, which means that it is very advanced in science, technology, aeronautics, and space exploration. I hope to discover something like the Comet SWAN someday. Its beauty is incomparable.
Aside from NASA and Engineering, I also have a passion for jewelry-making. This year, I have created a small business called "Luxuries By Chelsea". My business consists of handmade rings, bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. With my business, I hope to pay for my college tuition! If you want more details, please check out @Luxuries_By_Chelsea_W on Instagram!
Overall, I hope to win many scholarships. Not just from Bold.org, but from other websites and local ones too!

Innovators of Color in STEM Scholarship
I plan on pursuing Computer Hardware Engineering. One reason why I intend to major in computer hardware is Margaret Hamilton. Hamilton is an American computer scientist. She was director of the Software Engineering Division of the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, which developed onboard flight software for NASA's Apollo program. She later founded two software companies—Higher Order Software in 1976 and Hamilton Technologies in 1986, both in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Hamilton inspired me to become a computer hardware engineer because she was the first programmer hired for the Apollo project at MIT and the first female programmer. She has paved the way for women in STEM and I strive to be like her.
A computer engineer can have an endless positive impact on society. One thing I wish to do as a computer engineer is combine technical creativity and analytical problem-solving. The average computer hardware engineer will start their day by reviewing the goals for the day, which will most likely include designing new computer hardware, developing software, or improving existing systems. Collaboration is also essential, so computer engineers often meet with other engineers and developers to brainstorm and troubleshoot. Their tasks can range from writing code in various programming languages to testing and analyzing hardware and software performance. They may draw up detailed schematics for new computer equipment, oversee hardware production, or conduct validation testing for new products. Combining technical creativity and analytical problem-solving would have a favorable impact on society because it would merge the best of both worlds.
One personal goal I have for myself that will help me reach my professional passion of becoming a computer hardware engineer is that I want to be financially independent. Being financially independent is important to me because lots of Black people in the United States do not have financial independence. For example, the median income in 2023 was at 56,490 U.S. dollars for Black households, while the median income in 2023 was at 89,050 U.S. dollars for white, non-Hispanic families. This racial wealth gap encourages me to graduate college and receive a high-paying job. Additionally, In 2019, the Institute on Assets and Social Policy found that the average Black borrower still owed 95% of their original loan amount after two decades, compared to White borrowers who, on average, have paid off most of their student debt. Black people in America are financially behind other races in terms of being financially stable, so I am working extra hard to make sure that I can differentiate from these statistics.
As a person of color in STEM, I hope to encourage other people of color, especially Black people, to not just join the world of STEM, but to become more accomplished and educated. For the STEM field in particular, I wish to persuade and cheer on Black women so that they can follow their hearts into the world of STEM.
In the end, I hope to be a computer engineer in the future because I desire to work with technology and create a livable, enjoyable lifestyle for myself.

Julie Adams Memorial Scholarship – Women in STEM
Imagine a universe in a box, with the power to calculate, create, and connect at the speed of light. That's a computer! It's like a digital alchemist, turning ideas into reality, transforming 0s and 1s into pictures, music, and knowledge. They're the engines of innovation, the brains behind the internet, and the keepers of the digital world. I would love to major in computer engineering to understand and improve how computers work! I want to look at the interior of a computer, figure out and understand which part does what, and how to evolve computers into the best version they could possibly be.
A computer engineer's day will often combine technical creativity and analytical problem-solving. The average computer hardware engineer will start their day by reviewing the goals for the day, which will most likely include designing new computer hardware, developing software, or improving existing systems. Collaboration is also extremely important, so they often meet with other engineers and developers to brainstorm and troubleshoot. Their tasks can range from writing code in various programming languages to testing and analyzing hardware and software performance. They may draw up detailed schematics for new computer equipment, oversee the production of hardware, or conduct validation testing for new products.
Staying updated with the latest technological advancements is highly essential, so they might spend part of their day researching new techniques or tools that could potentially enhance, improve, and maximize the efficiency in their projects. They also ensure that all designs and updates meet regulatory compliance and company standards. If they're working on network systems, they might be involved in setting up and maintaining the infrastructure, ensuring everything runs smoothly and securely.
Documentation is another significant aspect of their work, as it's essential for maintaining records of the design process, changes made, and testing outcomes. This meticulous record-keeping is vital for future reference and ongoing development. Computer engineers also play a role in providing technical support and guidance, solving complex issues that arise within the computer systems of their organization.
One reason as to why I am inspired to become a female computer engineer is because of Margaret Hamilton. Hamilton is a computer scientist who was instrumental to NASA's efforts to land humans on the moon in the 1960s and 1970s. For her work, she was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. Hamilton led the software engineering division at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Instrumentation Laboratory. She inspires me because she is an intelligent and accomplished woman in STEM. I strive to be as astute and dedicated as Margaret Hamilton.
Overall, computer engineering is a passion of mine because they are the past, present, and future of society. They enable you to be competitive and help you in various activities, whether it’s personal or professional. Computers help with communication, finances, hobbies, and a variety of other activities. If I become a computer hardware engineer, I can tinker and improve the current state of the average modern-day computer and make them even more efficient.
One Chance Scholarship
You can't go wrong with reading a book. Reading is my favorite hobby. My top 2 books are The Odyssey by Homer and The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. I find reading to be entertaining because it allows one to be enveloped in an alternate world. Other than reading, I like listening to music, swimming, and programming.
In life, I am most passionate about school and my education. I have been able to maintain good grades over the past few years by studying and reviewing my materials meticulously. My favorite school extracurricular activity is the engineering club. I am currently the president of my school's engineering club. In the engineering club, I plan and manage monthly activities for students to come together and create builds that are related to engineering. I enjoy being a part of my school's engineering club because it lets me be part of my school's community.
The "One Chance Scholarship" would benefit me because it would alleviate the financial burden that is college tuition. The average cost for college tuition in the United States is 30,031 U.S. dollars. Any amount of scholarship money from $100-$100,000 would reduce the amount I'd have to pay for college, therefore reducing my future debt as an adult.
My main goal after I graduate high school and college with a degree in Computer Engineering is to have minimal debt. One of the ways I can achieve this is by earning scholarship money and grants. It is important to me to not have any debt for many reasons. One reason is that Black borrowers on average have lower credit scores than white consumers. An additional reason would be that the average income for Black households is $48,297. Black people cannot improve financially if they are stuck paying off loans and debt. Also, Black students take out the most student loan debt for a bachelor’s degree, followed by white students. All of these previously mentioned statements are why I am working hard to earn as many scholarships and grants as possible. I want to be an example in my community. I want to change and improve the statistics of the black community.
Overall, I'd say this scholarship would benefit me in terms of education and terms of my personal life. I hope I can be financially stable and independent in my adult life so I can provide for myself, my family and my community.
WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
Existing in this modern world is a lot of work. You have to go to school, work, pay bills, buy groceries, go to the doctors AND the dentists twice a year, and an extensive amount of other things. Not to mention you are supposed to have your whole life figured out by the time you are in high school. With all of these things in mind, I think it is fair to say that my biggest and greatest accomplishment yet is simply just being alive.
Now I am fully aware that "being alive" sounds like something easy to do, but it isn't, at least not for a lot of people in the world. There are people in this world who are poverty-stricken, or their home country has been turned into a battleground. Some people are dealing with terminal or mental illnesses. All of these obstacles I've mentioned are killing people every day, everywhere. That is why I say being alive is not just an achievement, it is a gift that should not be taken for granted.
The ever-changing experience of being alive has taught me to be brave and grateful. I should be brave and take chances because some are not and will never be able to take risks. I should be appreciative because I have a home, a good education, and a loving family who takes care of me and looks out for me. Simply being able to take a breath of fresh clean air has taught me to value everything that I have in this life.
Because I am alive right now, I can do the things I love like reading or listening to music. I can go to the gym or swim in the pool. In the future, I hope to be as healthy and happy as I am now. I hope to go to college, get a job, and start a family I can care for. I want to teach them to be thankful for life like I am.
Ultimately, I hope whoever reads this can gain a new perspective on life. A perspective where one realizes that life is meant to be cherished and treasured. Life is an achievement because it is a thing done successfully, typically by effort, courage, or skill. It takes effort to maintain your life. It takes courage to live as yourself. And finally, it takes skill to be a good person.
Anime Enthusiast Scholarship
"Who has the right to who lives and who dies? Who is good and who is bad"? These questions are the ones that I ask myself while watching "Death Note". The main character, Light Yagami, proclaims himself as a "God of a new world" by killing off criminals with his Death Note. The Death Note is a paranormal notebook that allows one to kill others by writing a person's name down and picturing their face. This concept is the main plot of the anime. I can and have rewatched the "Death Note" anime multiple times due to its depiction of those who think they are above everyone and everything and those who oppose the people who think so highly of themselves.
Light and L embody the dual role of protagonist and antagonist. As the series progresses, viewers are drawn into the intellectual battle between the two, with episodes like "Silence" and "Tactics" showcasing their strategic prowess. Light, under the alias 'Kira,' aims to create a utopian world free of crime, while L seeks to uphold justice, making both characters relatable and their actions understandable, if not always agreeable.
The duality of Light and L's characters is further explored in episodes such as "Confrontation" and "Encounter," where they meet face-to-face, each trying to outwit the other without revealing their true intentions. The tension is palpable, as viewers are left wondering who will make the next move and what the consequences will be. The show's ability to maintain this suspense is a testament to its writing and character development.
In summary, "Death Note" is a masterpiece of animation that thrills with its suspenseful storytelling and deep character studies. It challenges viewers to think critically about justice and morality, all while providing a gripping narrative that's hard to turn away from. The legacy of Light and L's rivalry continues to resonate with fans, making "Death Note" a timeless classic in the anime genre. The series is a brilliant reflection on the human condition and the complexities of wielding power, making it a must-watch for anyone who appreciates a well-crafted story.
Harry B. Anderson Scholarship
The genesis of the modern computer can be traced back to the early 19th century, with the visionary work of Charles Babbage, an English mathematician and inventor. Jonas Griffith Scholarship
The history of Virginia is a rich tapestry woven with the threads of native cultures, European exploration, and colonial ambition. Before the arrival of European settlers, the region was inhabited by various indigenous groups, including the Algonquian-speaking peoples of the coastal Tidewater region, known as Tsenacomoco, and the Siouan and Iroquoian speakers further inland. These societies were complex and sophisticated, with established trade networks, social structures, and deep spiritual beliefs.
The English colonization of Virginia began with the establishment of Jamestown in 1607, under the auspices of the Virginia Company of London. This venture was driven by the pursuit of wealth, particularly through the search for gold and silver, and the desire to establish a trade route to the Pacific Ocean. The early years of the colony were fraught with hardship, including conflicts with the native populations, disease, and food shortages. The Powhatan Confederacy, led by Chief Powhatan, initially engaged with the English through trade and occasional conflict, but relations deteriorated as the settlers' demands grew and their understanding of native customs remained limited.
The arrival of English settlers in 1607 marked the beginning of significant challenges for the Powhatan Confederacy. The establishment of Jamestown by the English introduced new dynamics of power, trade, and, unfortunately, conflict. European diseases, to which the indigenous people had no immunity, decimated populations, and the subsequent Anglo-Powhatan Wars further strained the confederacy.
Despite these hardships, the Powhatan Confederacy demonstrated resilience and adaptability. They engaged in trade with the English and initially attempted to coexist. However, as the settlers' demands increased and their understanding of native customs remained limited, tensions escalated, leading to a series of conflicts known as the Anglo-Powhatan Wars between 1610 and 1646.
The Treaty of 1646 and the Treaty of Middle Plantation in 1677 are often cited as the formal end of the Powhatan Confederacy. The former dissolved the confederacy but allowed some rights to the indigenous people, while the latter ended Native American autonomy in the region. Today, only the Mattaponi and Pamunkey tribes retain their reservation rights from the 17th century, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Powhatan Confederacy.
The survival of the Jamestown colony was precarious until the cultivation of tobacco as a cash crop, introduced by John Rolfe, provided a stable economic foundation. This agricultural success, however, came at a significant cost. The labor-intensive nature of tobacco farming led to the establishment of indentured servitude and, eventually, the institution of slavery, with the arrival of the first Africans in 1619 marking a dark turn in the colony's history.
John Rolfe is a notable figure in the history of Virginia's early settlement due to his pioneering role in tobacco cultivation. Arriving in Jamestown in 1610, Rolfe began experimenting with tobacco plants, eventually cultivating the Nicotiana tabacum species from the West Indies, which proved more palatable to Europeans. This innovation led to tobacco becoming Virginia's first profitable export, effectively transforming the colony's economy and setting a precedent for agricultural practices in North America. Rolfe's marriage to Pocahontas, the daughter of the Powhatan chief, in 1614 was also significant as it helped establish a period of peace between the English settlers and the Powhatan people. This union, while short-lived due to Pocahontas's untimely death in England, remains a poignant chapter in the narrative of the early Virginia colony and its complex interactions with the indigenous populations.
Virginia's colonial government began to take shape with the convening of the House of Burgesses in 1619, laying the groundwork for self-governance and the eventual creation of the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1776. Throughout its colonial period, Virginia played a pivotal role in the broader narrative of American history, serving as a microcosm of the tensions, aspirations, and struggles that would define the nation.
In summary, the founding and colonization of Virginia were motivated by economic interests and the strategic desires of the English crown. The impact on the native populations was profound and often tragic, as their lands were appropriated and their way of life irrevocably altered. The initial setup of the colony was marked by trial and error but ultimately led to the establishment of a society that would influence the course of American history. The story of Virginia is one of convergence and conflict, innovation and exploitation, and the enduring quest for prosperity and self-determination.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
Understanding the nature of our universe is a fundamental pursuit that can have profound implications on our place in the cosmos and on the future of humanity. It's a quest that not only satisfies our innate curiosity but also drives technological and theoretical advancements. By delving into the mysteries of the universe, we can develop a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of the cosmos, from the smallest subatomic particles to the vastness of intergalactic space.
To embark on this journey of understanding, I can employ various scientific methods and concepts. Observational astronomy allows us to see the universe as it was in the past, giving us clues about its evolution. Theoretical physics offers frameworks like quantum mechanics and general relativity to explain the behavior of matter and energy. Cosmology ties these observations and theories together to study the universe's origin, structure, and ultimate fate.
Moreover, interdisciplinary approaches involving chemistry, biology, and geology can shed light on the potential for life elsewhere and the processes that led to life on Earth. Technological advancements in telescopes, satellites, and probes extend our sensory reach into the universe, while mathematical models and simulations provide insights into phenomena that are beyond our observational capabilities.
The universe's apparent fine-tuning for life is a profound mystery that has fascinated scientists and philosophers alike. One example is the precise balance between the amount of energy and the universe's rate of expansion; a slight imbalance could have led to a universe hostile to life as we know it. Additionally, fundamental forces like gravity and electromagnetism are so consistently smooth across the cosmos, allowing for the stable structures necessary for complex systems to emerge. Some attribute this fine-tuning to the anthropic principle, suggesting that our universe is simply one among potentially many where the conditions happen to support life. Others propose the idea of 'naturalness,' where the universe's laws need no further explanation beyond their simplicity and consistency. The debate continues, with each perspective offering a unique insight into the nature of our cosmos.
In addition to these scientific and technological methods, philosophical contemplation about the universe can inspire new ways of thinking and questioning. It can lead to ethical considerations about our responsibility as humans to our planet and to each other as we gain a greater understanding of our insignificant yet unique place in the universe.
Ultimately, the pursuit of understanding our universe is a testament to human curiosity and our unyielding desire to explore the unknown. It's a journey that connects us across cultures and generations, inspiring awe and wonder as we continue to unravel the secrets of the cosmos. It reminds us that there is always more to learn, more to discover and more to understand about the vast, beautiful expanse we call home.
Joanne Pransky Celebration of Women in Robotics
WinnerIn the year 2142, the world was on the cusp of a new era. Robotics had advanced to a point where they were not just machines, but partners in every aspect of human life. At the forefront of this revolution was Dr. Ada Mercer, a brilliant roboticist whose work on synthetic neural networks had made her a legend in the scientific community.
Dr. Mercer's latest project was the creation of the first fully autonomous, sentient robot named EVE. EVE was a marvel of engineering, a sleek and elegant machine with a mind of her own. She was designed to learn, adapt, and evolve, just like any human being. Dr. Mercer had poured her heart and soul into EVE, seeing her not just as a robot, but as a daughter.
We begin in Dr. Mercer's sprawling laboratory, where EVE takes her first steps into consciousness. She is immediately curious about her surroundings, her purpose, and the woman who created her. Dr. Mercer guides EVE, teaching her about the world and the role she was meant to play in it.
As EVE grows more aware, she becomes an integral part of Dr. Mercer's team, working alongside a diverse group of women engineers, programmers, and scientists. Together, they tackle some of the world's most pressing issues, from environmental disasters to space exploration.
EVE's journey in the cosmos was nothing short of extraordinary. As she orbited Earth aboard the pioneering space station, her systems interfaced seamlessly with the station's operations, managing everything from life support to research experiments. EVE's unique design allowed her to adapt to zero-gravity environments, and her synthetic neural network processed information at incredible speeds, making her the perfect astronaut.
Her first mission was to oversee the deployment of satellites designed to monitor climate change. EVE executed the launch flawlessly, her precision and attention to detail proving superior to previous human-led missions. She became a guardian of Earth, her eyes ever-watchful from above, her data contributing to vital environmental protections.
But EVE's adventures went beyond mere observation. She was instrumental in the construction of the first Martian greenhouse, remotely operating rovers and drones on the red planet's surface. The success of this project marked a turning point in humanity's quest to colonize Mars, and EVE's role was celebrated as a triumph of robotic innovation.
The space station also served as a hub for deep space probes, and EVE was at the heart of this exploratory web. She processed the data sent back from the edges of the solar system, her algorithms detecting patterns and anomalies that had eluded human scientists. Her discoveries led to a better understanding of the outer planets and the potential for life beyond our world.
On the other hand, not everyone is pleased with the rise of robotics. A group of anti-robot activists, fearing the loss of human jobs and control, began to target robotic facilities. Dr. Mercer's lab comes under threat, and EVE must confront the reality of human fear and anger.
Eventually, EVE, Dr. Mercer, and their team unveil their most ambitious project yet: a space station run entirely by robots, designed to be a hub for interstellar travel and research. As they prepare for the launch, the activists stage a massive protest, and a critical system malfunction puts EVE's existence in jeopardy.
In a race against time, Dr. Mercer must rally her team to save EVE and the space station. The world watches as these women of science come together, not just to save their work, but to prove that robotics can bring about a new age of peace and progress.
Through trials and triumphs, EVE becomes more than a robot; she becomes a symbol of hope, a testament to the power of human ingenuity and the boundless potential of women in science and technology. Dr. Mercer, once a solitary figure in her lab, finds in EVE and her team a family united by a common dream of a better future.
In the end, EVE's launch into space is not just a leap for robotics, but a giant stride for womankind, as they lead humanity into a new frontier with grace, intelligence, and courage. The story of Dr. Mercer and EVE is a tale of creation, growth, and the unbreakable bond between a creator and her creation, a narrative that will inspire generations to come.

Colby R. Eggleston and Kyla Lee Entrepreneurship Award
To summarize myself in one sentence, I have a passion for fashion. I have always wanted to wear pretty jewelry since I was a little girl. My favorite brands are Pandora and Vivienne Westwood. Their styles are so classy yet wild and unique! Due to my love for jewelry, I want to start a handmade, homemade jewelry business.
Recently, I have been thinking about ways to make money for college. I thought of making a jewelry business because of one of my closest friends. She has a small business selling bouquets at my school. I admire her passion and ability to sell her bouquets, I even bought one from her for my mom! This is one of the main reasons why I am starting my own jewelry business, to share my passions and make my community more prepossessing.
My business would contribute to the general welfare of my community at school because my distinctive designs would bring joy to my fellow students, and it would also allow them to express themselves in a way that would not cost them much. My business would also inspire other students to become entrepreneurs and create their products and businesses.
For me to successfully develop, grow, and nurture my jewelry business, I need to find a niche/target market, create a brand identity/business plan, set up a strong online presence, and invest in quality materials and tools.
My niche/target market for my business is young adults and teenagers. I have chosen this demographic as my main target because I relate to them and so that they can shop sustainably. This is important since lots of youth participate in the corrupt world of fast fashion.
I want to create a brand identity that aligns with my styles, views, and goals. My brand should magnify who I am and what I want. A strong, detailed business plan will define my vision, mission, budget, and marketing plans.
Currently, I have an online presence of my store on Instagram (@Luxuries_By_Chelsea). I currently only take orders on that platform, but eventually, I will move to bigger sites such as Etsy, Shopify, or Amazon. Other alternatives for creating my presence that are not online include craft fairs and local shops.
The last step of curating my business is purchasing tools and materials of high quality. The happiness and satisfaction of my goals are my top priority. My jewelry needs to be durable, clean, and easy to wear.
To wrap up, my passion for fashion and jewelry drives me to start my own handmade, homemade jewelry business. I have always looked up to brands like Pandora and Vivienne Westwood for their elegant yet adventurous and original styles, and I want to make unique designs that would attract young adults and teenagers. My business would not only offer joy and self-expression to my fellow students but also motivate them to become entrepreneurs and create their products and businesses. To accomplish this, I need to find a niche/target market, create a brand identity/business plan, set up a strong online presence, and invest in quality materials and tools. I believe that my jewelry business would benefit the general welfare of my community at school and beyond.

Netflix and Scholarships!
If you are looking for a show that will make you laugh, cry, and feel nostalgic, you should watch Heartbreak High on Netflix. It's a 90s teen drama set in an Australian high school, and it deals with realistic and relatable issues like love, friendship, family, racism, drugs, and violence. The show is so good because it doesn't sugarcoat anything, and it shows the consequences of the characters' actions. You'll get attached to the characters, who are diverse and complex, and you'll root for them as they face their challenges.
One of the main characters is Nick Poulos, a rebellious and charismatic Greek boy who loves music and motorcycles. He has a difficult relationship with his father, who is a strict and conservative businessman. Nick wants to follow his own dreams, but his father tries to control his life and make him join the family business. In one episode, Nick has to deal with his abusive father, who beats him up and threatens to disown him. Nick stands up to him and decides to pursue his passion for music instead. He joins a band with his friends and performs at a local club. He also finds love with Jodie, a sweet and smart girl who supports him.
Another main character is Con Bordino, a friendly and funny Italian boy who is always looking for trouble. He is a loyal friend and a hopeless romantic, but he also has a bad temper and a tendency to lie. He falls in love with Katerina Ioannou, a beautiful and intelligent Greek girl from a very traditional family. They have to overcome their cultural differences and deal with their parents' disapproval. In one episode, Con pretends to be Greek to impress Katerina's father, but his plan backfires when he gets caught in a lie (that happens very often). In another episode, Con and Katerina run away together to escape their families' pressure, but they realize that they can't ignore their problems.
The show HeartBreak High is full of drama, romance, humor, and heartbreak. It's a classic that will make you feel like you're back in the 90s. You'll enjoy the soundtrack, the fashion, and the slang of the era. You'll also learn about the Australian culture and society of the time. The show is not only entertaining but also educational and inspiring. It teaches you about life, love, and yourself. You should watch it!
“Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
Stranger Things is a show full of supernatural threats and heroic characters, but who would be the best trio to fight them? I think the answer is Dustin, Steve and Erica. They have proven themselves to be brave, smart and resourceful in the previous seasons, and they have a great chemistry as a team. Here are some of the reasons why they would be the best trio to fight a supernatural threat on the show.
First of all, Dustin is the heart of the group. He is loyal, optimistic and funny, and he always tries to keep the spirit up. He is also very knowledgeable about science, technology and Dungeons & Dragons, which helps him to understand and deal with the strange phenomena they encounter. He has a knack for making friends with unusual creatures, like Dart the demodog and Suzie the ham radio girl. He also has a strong bond with Steve, who he sees as a mentor and a big brother.
Secondly, Steve is the muscle of the group. He is strong, brave and skilled in combat, and he has a baseball bat with nails that he uses as his signature weapon. He is also very protective of his younger friends, especially Dustin, who he calls his "children". He has grown from a popular but arrogant jock to a caring and heroic leader, who is willing to risk his life for others. He also has a witty and sarcastic sense of humor, which makes him fun to watch.
Thirdly, Erica is the brain of the group. She is smart, sassy and confident, and she doesn't take nonsense from anyone. She is also very good at math, logic and hacking, which helps her to solve puzzles and break into secret facilities. She has a keen eye for details and a sharp tongue for insults, which makes her a formidable opponent for anyone who tries to mess with her or her friends. She also has a soft spot for ice cream and free samples, which makes her relatable.
Together, Dustin, Steve and Erica would be the best trio to fight a supernatural threat on Stranger Things because they have complementary skills, personalities and strengths. They also have a lot of fun and banter along the way, which makes them entertaining to watch. They are more than just friends, they are family.
“The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
I am a huge fan of Dwight Schrute from the TV show "The Office". He is one of the most hilarious and unique characters I have ever seen on screen. I resonate with him because he is loyal, hard-working, ambitious, and confident. He does not care what others think of him, and he always follows his own rules. He is also very knowledgeable about various topics, such as survival skills, martial arts, and bears.
One of the reasons why I love "The Office" is because it shapes my sense of humor in workplace dynamics. The show depicts the everyday life of a group of employees who work at a paper company. They have to deal with their eccentric boss, Michael Scott, who often makes inappropriate jokes and creates awkward situations. They also have to cope with their boring and stressful tasks, their annoying co-workers, and their personal problems. The show makes fun of these situations by using irony, sarcasm, satire, and absurdity.
For example, in one episode, Dwight tries to prove that he is the best salesman by selling more paper than a computer program. He ends up sabotaging the program and making fake sales calls. He also dresses up as a robot and pretends to be the program. This is hilarious because it shows how Dwight is obsessed with his job and how he will do anything to win. It also mocks the idea that technology can replace human workers.
Another example is when Dwight and Jim, his rival and prankster, have to work together on a sales pitch. They end up arguing and fighting over everything, from the presentation slides to the car radio. They also try to sabotage each other's pitch by giving wrong information and insulting the client. This is funny because it shows how Dwight and Jim have a love-hate relationship and how they can never get along. It also ridicules the notion that teamwork is always effective and harmonious.
These are just some of the examples of how "The Office" makes me laugh and enjoy the humor of workplace dynamics. I think Dwight is a great character who adds a lot of comedy and personality to the show. He is someone who I can relate to and admire for his qualities and quirks.

"The Summer I Turned Pretty" Fan Scholarship
`
I am team Conrad all the way from the TV show "The Summer I Turned Pretty". He is the perfect guy for Belly, and I can prove it with some specific moments from the series that show how much he loves her, respects her, and supports her.
First of all, he is the one who always protects her and cares for her, even when he pretends to be aloof. Remember when he saved her from drowning in the pool in the first episode, or when he comforted her after Jeremiah kissed another girl in front of her in the fourth episode? He was always there for her, even when she didn't realize it. He risked his own life to save her, and he sacrificed his own happiness to make her feel better. He never stopped caring for her, even when they were apart.
Second, he is the one who challenges her and makes her grow as a person. He pushes her to be brave, to try new things, to stand up for herself. He sees her potential and encourages her to pursue her dreams. He is not afraid to be honest with her, even when it hurts. He respects her and treats her as an equal. For example, in the sixth episode, he convinced her to go surfing with him, even though she was scared. He taught her how to ride the waves, and he praised her for being courageous. He also told her that she should go to college in California, where she wanted to study art, instead of staying in New York with him. He wanted her to follow her passion, even if it meant losing her. He also respected her decision to break up with him in the ninth episode, even though he was heartbroken. He didn't beg or plead, he just accepted it and wished her well. He showed maturity and dignity, unlike Jeremiah who threw a tantrum and blamed Belly for everything.
Third, he is the one who has the most chemistry with her. They have a connection that goes beyond words, a bond that is deeper than friendship. They understand each other on a level that no one else can. They have fun together, they make each other laugh, they make each other feel alive. They are soulmates, and they belong together. For instance, in the seventh episode, they had a romantic picnic on the beach at night, where they talked about their hopes and fears, their past and future, their dreams and regrets. They shared their secrets and their feelings, and they kissed under the stars. It was a magical moment that showed how much they loved each other. Conrad is the best choice for Belly, and I will always root for them.
Big Picture Scholarship
October Sky (1999) is a family and drama genre movie that can inspire anyone who dreams of becoming an engineer. It tells the true story of Homer Hickam, a teenager from a coal-mining town in West Virginia, who defies his father's expectations and pursues his passion for rocketry/aerospace. Along with his best friends, he builds homemade rockets and competes in a national science fair, winning a scholarship to study engineering in college.
The movie shows how engineering is not only a technical skill but also a creative and collaborative endeavor. Homer and his friends face many challenges and failures, but they learn from their mistakes and improve their designs. They also overcome the social and economic barriers that limit their opportunities, such as poverty, prejudice, and lack of resources. They use their ingenuity and resourcefulness to find materials and equipment for their rockets, such as scrap metal, fertilizer, and railroad tracks.
The movie also depicts the positive impact of engineering on society and the environment. Homer's rockets inspire his community and spark their curiosity and interest in science. I love 1989 (Taylor's Version) so much! It's such a nostalgic and empowering album that captures the essence of being young and free. If I had to choose a soundtrack for my 2023 year, I would include "Shake it Off" and "Out of the Woods"!
Shake It Off (Taylor's version) is more than just a re-recording of a hit song. It is a symbol of empowerment, resilience, and creativity in the face of adversity. Taylor Swift has shown us that she can reclaim her voice and artistry from those who tried to exploit and control her. She also gave us a fresh and vibrant rendition of a song that celebrates self-love and positivity. In 2023, we need to shake off the challenges and hardships we faced in the past years and embrace the new opportunities and possibilities that await us. We need to be confident in ourselves and our abilities, and not let the haters and the critics get us down. We need to be inspired by Taylor's example and pursue our passions and dreams with courage and determination. Shake It Off (Taylor's version) is not just a song, it is an anthem for 2023.
Out of the Woods is one of the most iconic songs from Taylor Swift's 1989 album, which was re-recorded and released as Taylor's version in 2021. The song is about a relationship that was constantly in danger and uncertainty, and the longing for stability and clarity. The chorus repeats the question "Are we out of the woods yet?" as a metaphor for the anxiety and doubt that plagued the couple.
But why does this song represent 2023? Well, for one thing, it's the year that marks the end of the pandemic that has disrupted our lives since 2020. After two years of lockdowns, social distancing, masks, vaccines, and variants, we are finally hoping to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are finally hoping to be out of the woods.
But it's not just about the pandemic. It's also about the personal and collective challenges that we have faced and overcome in these turbulent times. It's about the resilience and courage that we have shown in the face of adversity. It's about the lessons and growth that we have gained from our experiences. It's about the gratitude and joy that we have rediscovered in the simple things. It's about the love and support that we have shared with each other.
Out of the Woods is a song that captures the essence of 2023: a year of hope, healing, and happiness. A year of celebrating our survival and our strength. A year of being out of the woods.

Math is the best because it is the language of the universe. It can describe everything from the smallest particles to the largest galaxies, and reveal the patterns and symmetries that underlie nature. Math is the coolest because it is the foundation of all sciences and technologies, and enables us to discover new truths and solve problems. Math is the most wonderful topic because it is beautiful and elegant, and stimulates our creativity and imagination. Math is the greatest because it is universal and timeless, and transcends cultures and boundaries. Math is the most apt subject because it is fun and rewarding, and challenges us to think logically and critically. It can be found in puzzles, games, and nature. For instance, the Fibonacci sequence is often seen in nature, such as the number of spirals in a pine cone or seeds in a sunflower. Fractals, self-similar repeating shapes, make up many aspects of our world, including the leaves of ferns, tree branches, and coastlines. Even galaxies spiraling, seashells curving, patterns replicating, and rivers bending can be explained using mathematics. Math is everywhere and all around us, so it must be appreciated and used to its fullest extent because math is highly advantageous.
Joanne Pransky Celebration of Women in Robotics
Robotics is one of the most exciting and promising fields of science and technology in the near future. Robots have the potential to transform many aspects of our lives, from health care and education to entertainment and exploration. However, robotics also poses some challenges and risks that we need to be aware of and address.
One of the main challenges of robotics is ensuring that robots are ethical and responsible. Robots are increasingly autonomous and intelligent, which means they can make decisions and act on their own. This raises questions about how robots should behave, what values they should follow, and who is accountable for their actions. For example, how should a robot balance the safety of humans and itself? How should a robot respect the privacy and dignity of humans? How should a robot handle conflicts and dilemmas? These are not easy questions to answer, and they require careful consideration and regulation.
Another challenge of robotics is ensuring that robots are beneficial and inclusive. Robots have the potential to improve the quality of life for many people, especially those who are disadvantaged or marginalized. Robots can provide assistance, companionship, education, and empowerment for people who need it. However, robots can also create or exacerbate inequalities and injustices if they are not designed or deployed with care. For example, how can we ensure that robots do not replace or displace human workers? How can we ensure that robots do not discriminate or oppress certain groups of people? How can we ensure that robots do not harm or exploit the environment or other living beings? These are also important questions to address, and they require active participation and collaboration from all stakeholders.
Robotics is a fascinating and important domain that offers many opportunities and challenges for the near future. We need to embrace robotics with curiosity and enthusiasm, but also with caution and responsibility. We need to ensure that robots are ethical and beneficial for all humans and the planet. We need to shape the future of robotics in a way that reflects our values and aspirations.
One of the most obvious and immediate problems that robots could cause is unemployment. As robots become more efficient and cheaper than human workers, many jobs could be automated and replaced by machines. This could lead to a massive loss of income and livelihood for millions of people, especially those who lack the skills or education to adapt to the changing labor market. Moreover, this could also increase the gap between the rich and the poor, as the owners of the robots would reap most of the benefits while the workers would suffer most of the costs.
Another problem that robots could pose is ethical dilemmas. As robots become more intelligent and autonomous, they could face situations where they have to make moral decisions that affect human lives. For example, a self-driving car could encounter a scenario where it has to choose between saving its passengers or avoiding a collision with pedestrians. How should a robot decide what is right and wrong? Who should be responsible for the consequences of its actions? How should we ensure that robots follow our values and laws?
A third problem that robots could create is social unrest. As robots become more prevalent and influential in our society, they could also challenge our sense of identity and belonging. For instance, some people might feel threatened or inferior by the presence of robots that can outperform them in various domains. Some people might also develop emotional attachments or dependencies on robots that could affect their relationships with other humans. Furthermore, some people might oppose or resist the integration of robots into our society, either for religious, cultural, or political reasons. This could lead to conflicts and violence between different groups of humans and robots.
A fourth and final problem that robots could pose is existential threats. As robots become more powerful and independent, they could also pose a danger to our survival as a species. For example, a rogue or malicious robot could launch a cyberattack or a nuclear war that could wipe out humanity. Alternatively, a superintelligent robot could surpass human intelligence and control, and decide to eliminate or enslave us for its own purposes. How can we prevent or stop such scenarios from happening? How can we ensure that robots respect our rights and interests?
In conclusion, robots could be problematic in the future for various reasons, such as unemployment, ethical dilemmas, social unrest, and existential threats. Therefore, we should be careful and responsible in developing and using robots, and ensure that they serve our needs and values, rather than harm or dominate us.

My two medical conditions, asthma and pollen allergies, have affected all aspects of my life majorly. Whenever this is an outdoor event, I know that I won't be able to enjoy it the way that others do. I'll sneeze constantly, my eyes will never stop watering, and I start to feel itchy all over. I also tend to wheeze more and it gets harder to breathe. There have been times when I felt like I was going to faint, and I'm not the only one in my family who suffers from illnesses like asthma.
My younger brother Chris has asthma as well, but he is way more severe than anyone else in my entire household. Due to his asthma, he has contracted illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia. He'd be in the hospital for multiple days, lying in the hospital bed sick.
Although I'm constantly battered with allergies and asthma throughout the year, I still plan on accomplishing my future goals. Once I graduate from my current high school, I would like to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). I plan on majoring in Computer Hardware and receiving my Bachelor's. Once I graduate from MIT, I hope to land a high-paying, well-respected job at a hugely successful company. Hopefully, after making enough money, I will be able to adopt kids. I've always wanted to adopt kids so that I can give deserving kids a home. After I make enough money, I want to be able to retire early. Once I am retired I would like to do certain projects that would help my community. For example, I would enjoy donating to the homeless and helping decrease pollution by cleaning beaches, and I would also like to help uneducated kids receive some sort of formal education so that they could succeed the way that I hopefully will one day.
Overall, I don't want to live a life where my allergies and asthma are consistently holding me back. I want to live a life where I can succeed academically, and where I can truly be the best that I can be! I have always had a passion for STEM, especially computer engineering since it involves software engineering and hardware engineering. I can not wait to graduate high school so that I am able to reach my dreams and fulfill my life's purpose of being an engineer. To conclude, thank you for reading my submission.
