James Lynn Baker II #BeACoffeeBean Scholarship
Everyone has something they cannot live without; mine is a mirror. Looking in the mirror has never just been about fixing my hair or brushing my teeth—it has been about piecing together who I am, through flaws or challenges. Each reflection I faced told a different story.
Growing up, my greatest hardship was not something that could easily be seen. As a child, I struggled deeply with body dysmorphia. I distinctly remember hating swimming lessons because I despised the reflection I saw in the swim locker room mirrors. Seeing myself in a bathing suit created a sense of isolation and anxiety and negatively affected the way that I viewed myself. At the time, I had no idea how difficult it would be to overcome this internal challenge.
As years passed and my weight fluctuated, I became more obsessed with my weight and began to drastically reduce my food intake. Initially, the weight loss generated a response that made me happy but over time, concern grew about my appearance. Not only did others see that there was a problem but inside, I felt it too.
With the help of my family and therapy I began to realize that I had used looking in the mirror as a tool for judgment. However, in reality, it was just a simple glass that showed a reflection. It also became apparent to me that mirrors do not change; perspective does. Ironically, while taking a class, I recognized that I suffered from body dysmorphia. At this point, I understood that healing and a change in mindset were needed and I began to do the work.
I surrounded myself with a supportive network of people who reminded me of my worth. Through various non-profit organizations, I began to volunteer my talents to help those in need. As Vice President of Jack and Jill I helped to organize food and clothing drives, read books to underrepresented minority children, and prepared lunches for the homeless. My volunteer work through the NAACP involved tutoring students who were struggling academically during COVID. This also gave me opportunity to mentor them as they navigated personal, family, and social challenges. I continue to volunteer as a tutor due to my love for the children. Although initially, it was very difficult to see myself the way that others saw me, I continued to push myself in the direction to heal. I excelled in the Sports Medicine Program, became the captain of my tennis team, and served as my school's Junior Class President. As a member of Hope Squad for suicide prevention, I supported peers who faced mental health struggles similar to mine.
These experiences reshaped my purpose. I realized, my reflection is not just about my appearance or perfection, it was more than that. Now, I choose to see my values, character, and experiences that shape who I am. I also choose to lift others who feel unseen.
Being awarded this scholarship would affirm that personal growth, resilience, and service are also worthy of investment. As I plan to pursue a career in medicine, my goal is to make an impact in the field of mental health. Although I want to become a physician, I also desire to pursue my master’s degree in the field of Public Health. Having both degrees will allow change on a global level.
Overall, I am confident that through my personal experiences, my education, and my compassion for those in need, I will be able to achieve my career goals and effect meaningful change. As I grow into adulthood, I will continue to advocate for those in need.
