As a veteran, I have seen firsthand how physical and mental health can make or break a person’s quality of life. As a former health coach and personal trainer, I have worked with individuals who struggled with weight management, metabolic disorders, and a lack of confidence in their ability to improve their health. Now, as I pursue my master’s degree in clinical dietetics, I am committed to using science-backed nutrition education to transform lives, particularly for those who feel unheard or underserved by the healthcare system. Nutrition is often reduced to numbers—calories in, calories out—but I believe true health extends beyond the plate. My goal as a dietitian is to take a holistic approach, addressing the emotional, behavioral, and socioeconomic factors that influence eating habits. However, my understanding of service-related PTSD deepened through my brother’s struggle with it. Watching him navigate the challenges of post-traumatic stress has given me a perspective that extends beyond my own experiences, shaping the way I view mental health, resilience, and the need for better support systems for veterans. One of the most important lessons I have learned through this journey is that PTSD is not a one-size-fits-all condition. It manifests differently for each person, affecting their emotions, behaviors, and relationships in unique ways. My brother, for example, has faced intense bouts of anxiety, hypervigilance, and withdrawal from the people who love him. In many ways, I saw a reflection of struggles that other veterans I’ve met have shared—difficulty adjusting to civilian life, feeling disconnected from others, and the constant mental replay of traumatic experiences.
