Schools need to be safe places for children to learn and not worry about being hurt, bullied, or exposed to drugs, including on the playground. I work at a school, and I see how the teachers are not paying attention to the students on the playground, and most of the time this is where bullying and being introduced to drugs can happen and the teachers are not paying attention, I believe that teachers should be walking around and checking in the bathrooms speaking to the kids and just being aware of their surrounding this would help the kids feel safe at school, they should have meetings on what to look for in a bully and someone who is being bullied, or keeping watch over kids to see if they see students acting weird due to drug use, and yes this happens in elementary schools too because drugs especially vape pens and edibles are so easily accessible at home they bring it to school to share. The punishment for these things should start harsh and stay harsh. I have seen in our school district that kids will get away with doing drugs in high school with just in-house detention, what does that teach these kids, that its ok to do drugs, I think there should be more programs starting in 5th grade unto high school about drugs, and that they should have to get counseling to see why they are doing drugs and how to look for a different outlet, or even bullying, teaching that everyone is different and it's not ok to pick on someone whom we think is different, we need to get more involved with our kids and find out what makes them thrive, what makes them want to learn, pique their interest, that is my goal for becoming a teacher, I have a son who has autism, he was bullied a lot in school, and I would tell him that people who pick on other people don’t like themselves, and they take it out on other people. It would break my heart knowing my son had to go through that, and as a teacher, it would be part of my curriculum to make sure my students understand that everyone is different and it is not ok to bully people because of it. Everyone deserves acceptance, our kids deserve to be in a drug-free zone, and they deserve to feel safe at school because you never know maybe school is the only place they can feel safe.
