Bold Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
As Glenn Close once said, “What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, and more conversation.” For too long, mental health has been a taboo subject. Admitting to the mere suffering makes an individual a broken member of society. A practical solution to this disease does not exist; however, being more open, more honest, and more empathetic will start the conversation needed to approach a possible framework to build a bridge to a “solution.”
Before mental health can be “fixed,” it needs to be a topic people are willing to talk about. It needs to be less stigmatized. It needs to be acknowledged as an actual illness. Growing up with a mother who suffers from depression, it has been both a blessing and curse to witness the conflicting sides. Very few people are aware of my mother’s suffering as she has worked her whole life to hide that side of herself. Depression was not something my grandparents talked about and it was certainly not something my family advertised to the public. I have watched her cry for no reason. I have watched her be so angry she could not think. I have watched her be elated and then crash rapidly and silently. Yet, it is something we cannot talk about.
In order to offer a practical solution for helping people who struggle with mental health, the disease needs to be recognized, discussed, and treated as the detriment that it is.
