Bio

I am a respectful and self-motivated Licensed and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant with 6 years of direct support/healthcare experience and 7 years of mental health care experience. I seek to improve the lives of others through sharing my passion for Occupational Therapy and Mental Health Interventions. I was inspired to take this career path after witnessing how much Occupational Therapy interventions and therapy improved the quality of life of my brother with Autism and Schizoaffective disorder. I believe that everyone has a right to dignified and compassionate care. I am a driven and outgoing individual with a great sense of patience and empathy for others. My work and personal experiences have lent me a great deal of understanding for those going through medical or emotional trauma. I strive to be a source of hope and education for those working to achieve their goals. In an effort to further my skills in assisting others to live their fullest lives, I have begun an online Bachelor’s Degree program in Behavioral Science. I then plan to continue on to earning my Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I currently work as a Paraeducator with children with special needs and behavioral disorders, a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant in a nursing home, and I volunteer with the National MS Society and a local homeless outreach program called Laundry on Linden. I love to help others and am grateful that I have access to a program where I can study online and have time to continue working in direct care while continuing my education.

You Glow Differently When You're Happy Scholarship
One of my happiest memories is that of when I had just been dumped by my boyfriend out of nowhere and my best friend/roommate came into my room to comfort me. She came up to me and said “I know you hate this, but I’m going to cuddle you,” and she laid in my bed with me all night so that I would not feel alone. To top it off, she woke up before me in the morning and ripped an art piece he gave me off the wall, leaving a snarky sticky note in its place.
Bold Hope for the Future Scholarship
I currently work as a paraeducator in a school with children in grades K-8, and they give me hope for the future. After many years of working with adults with special needs, I became jaded by the horrific comments that members of the general public would make toward them. Now that I am working with a younger generation, I have found renewed hope in that stigmatization changing. The students I work with are consistently kind and compassionate toward their peers, especially those with special needs. I work directly with children with various disabilities and atypical brains, which can often lead to them becoming cast out or negatively stigmatized. Though I feared that some children at the school would bully the children who are different from them, I have only witnessed positive exchanges between them and the students I support. Just last week, one of the children in the 2nd grade class got off the bus and walked hand in hand with his peer with multiple disabilities. He proudly told others that they were friends and stopped to hug him before they went to their desks. There was no shame presented by him or towards him for treating his classmate as em equal. Things were much different than this years ago, and this change gives me hope for the hearts of humanity.
    Bold Generosity Matters Scholarship
Generosity is a holistic concept to me. You can be generous with your time, your money, your resources, and your heart, but without heart behind your generosity, it lacks depth and genuineness. Generosity is sharing what you can, beyond obligation, for the good of others, and without the intent of receiving something in return. The challenge with generosity is that it can enable negative behaviors and disincentivize self-sufficiency if it becomes excessive. Genuine intentions and balance giving are essential in order for generosity to fully benefit others.
