Growing up in a low-income household has shaped my goals because it has made me look at life differently. Growing up, I was always taught to be grateful for the things I had instead of worrying about the things I did not. Now as I go on with my life, I try to look at everything from the view of someone blessed compared to others. I also try to aid people who have less than me because that was me at a point in time. There were times when I watched my mother struggle when it came to money. Seeing less fortunate people on the streets is truly heartbreaking, so when I can help them I always do. It also taught me to save money. Having the ability to save money allowed me to prioritize certain things and has taught me to think about a purchase before I press the pay button or before I swipe my card. Growing up in a low-income household has also made me very motivated to never give up on my dreams of becoming a physical therapist. The thought of taking my mother on her dream trip to Italy keeps me going. She sacrificed a lot of things and money to allow me to not notice the struggles she was going through. When I was younger, she always had a dream of buying a house and seeing her strive for greatness instilled that into me. It is something I am truly grateful for, having a mother who came from nothing able to make me into a hard worker. The final way growing up in a low-income household has shaped me and my family is it taught me that nothing came for free in this world. From a very young age, I was taught if I want something it will not be handed to me, but rather I would have to work for it. Whether it was something small like a candy bar or something big like getting accepted into college, I knew that I had to work hard for it. I would say this is a product of being in a low-income household because that is the way my mother grew up and she knew what it was like to be in my shoes. She also knew how to get out of being here, so because of that it was forced upon me that if I wanted something I would work as much as I needed to, to get it.
