Hello! My name is Chantel and I'm a senior in the 2024-2025 school year. My goal in life is to obtain my Doctorate in Dentistry and possibly specialize in Endodontistry. After this, I hope to be able to open up my own dental practice and provide for my community. I'm passionate about my cello, as I've been playing for 6 years, and also the medical field as I've worked hard to get accepted into the medical magnet freshman year and have been learning behind the scenes ever since. I believe I'm a great candidate as I have worked hard in school, earning the award for Academic Scholar every year, being on track for Magna Cum Laude, and will be completing a total of 12 Advanced Placement classes by the end of my high school career. I have also been involved in lots of volunteer work and clubs, such as the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, etc.

Women in Healthcare Scholarship
Since I was young, I have been fascinated by healthcare and its effects on people's everyday lives. My interest in dentistry began when I realized how important oral health is for overall wellness. I saw family members face dental problems that made it hard for them to eat or talk, and it also impacted their self-esteem. This experience taught me how powerful dental care can be, both physically and emotionally. I chose to study healthcare, focusing on dentistry, because I want to help create positive changes in people's lives. The thought of helping someone feel better about their smile is very inspiring to me. I appreciate both precision and compassion, and dentistry lets me use my skills to make a real difference. Each tooth and smile has a story, and I want to help create happier endings. In high school, my love for biology and science confirmed my choice of career. I took every chance to learn more about anatomy, chemistry, and advanced biology, which prepared me for the challenges of healthcare. Outside of school, my volunteer work at local health centers and my participation in the school orchestra taught me the importance of teamwork and determination—qualities that will be valuable in my future career. As a woman in healthcare, especially in dentistry, I have a chance to challenge stereotypes and break barriers. The field has been mostly male-dominated, but more women are joining and making great progress. I want to be part of this change by excelling in my studies and clinical work, and by encouraging other young women who may doubt their place in these fields. Representation matters in every area, and I am dedicated to a future where women lead in healthcare. Traditionally, this field has been male-dominated, but I see a time when women will bring fresh ideas and solutions to the forefront. My main goal is to open my own dental practice, focusing on providing quality care to underserved communities that often lack access to essential health services. Many areas still face major obstacles to healthcare, especially in dental care, where gaps can lead to serious health issues. I believe my practice can help close this gap. By serving these underserved groups, I aim to offer necessary dental services while also educating and empowering people about their oral health. This comprehensive approach can help create healthier communities and improve overall well-being. As a woman in healthcare, I am motivated to succeed not just for myself but for those around me. I value mentorship and support, and I am committed to helping others in the field. I want to make sure that everyone, no matter their background, has access to the care they need for healthier, happier lives. In my healthcare studies, I am not just looking for personal success; I want to make a lasting, positive impact on individuals and communities. I understand that healthcare is about more than just treating problems; it’s about building relationships, earning trust, and recognizing each patient’s unique needs. With strong dedication, empathy, and a focus on excellence, I believe I can make a real difference as a dentist and as a woman in healthcare.
Deborah Thomas Scholarship Award
Every time I imagine a person suffering from dental pain, I see an opportunity to bring relief and restore their quality of life. My career choice in dentistry, with a specialization in endodontistry, is not just about treating teeth; it’s about transforming lives one smile at a time. Through my expertise, empathy, and dedication, I plan to make a significant and positive impact on the world.
Dentistry is a field that is often underestimated in its power to influence overall health and well-being. Oral health is intrinsically linked to the body's systemic health, impacting everything from cardiovascular conditions to diabetes management. By focusing on endodontics—the specialized branch of dentistry that deals with the tooth pulp and the tissues surrounding the root of a tooth—I aim to address critical issues that can lead to severe health complications if left untreated. Endodontic therapy, particularly root canals, can save teeth that would otherwise be lost to infection, thereby preserving the patient's natural smile and preventing further health issues.
My vision is to open my own dental practice where patient care goes beyond conventional treatment. I envision a practice that integrates advanced technology, patient education, and a compassionate approach to treatment. Utilizing the latest in endodontic technology, such as 3D imaging and laser therapy, I will ensure that my patients receive the most accurate diagnoses and minimally invasive treatments. This commitment to cutting-edge technology not only improves treatment outcomes but also enhances patient comfort and trust.
Education plays a crucial role in my strategy to make a positive impact. Many individuals suffer from dental problems due to a lack of awareness and proper education about oral hygiene. At my practice, I will implement comprehensive patient education programs to teach preventive care and the importance of regular dental check-ups. By empowering patients with knowledge, I hope to reduce the prevalence of dental diseases and promote a culture of proactive health management.
Community outreach is another cornerstone of my mission. I plan to organize free dental camps and workshops in underserved areas to provide essential dental care and spread awareness about oral health. These initiatives will focus on vulnerable populations who often lack access to quality dental services, such as low-income families, the elderly, and children. By bringing dental care to these communities, I aim to bridge the gap in healthcare disparities and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to maintain a healthy smile.
Furthermore, my practice will champion sustainability and environmental responsibility. Dentistry, like any other medical field, has an environmental footprint. I intend to adopt eco-friendly practices, such as using biodegradable materials, reducing waste, and incorporating energy-efficient technologies. By promoting sustainability in dental care, I can contribute to a healthier planet while setting an example for other healthcare providers.
In addition to clinical excellence, I am committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. By creating a team culture based on respect, continuous learning, and professional growth, my practice will not only be a place of healing for patients but also a nurturing space for aspiring dental professionals.
In conclusion, my career in endodontics is a path through which I can profoundly impact individual lives and broader communities. I will contribute to a healthier and happier world. Each smile restored and each pain alleviated is a testament to the positive change I aspire to bring through my dedication to dentistry.
Amber D. Hudson Memorial Scholarship
As a future healthcare professional, my mission is to harness the transformative power of nutrition to educate and assist patients and their families in improving both the quantity and quality of their lives.
The first step in this mission is education. Many patients are unaware of how significantly their dietary choices influence their health. My goal is to bridge this knowledge gap by providing clear, evidence-based information tailored to each patient's needs. This starts with patient-centered consultations where I will explain how specific nutrients affect their condition. For instance, patients with heart disease will learn about the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in reducing inflammation and improving cardiovascular health, while those battling cancer will receive guidance on antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables that can help fight oxidative stress.
However, education alone is not enough. Patients need practical tools and strategies to implement these nutritional changes in their daily lives. I plan to develop comprehensive, personalized nutrition plans that consider individual preferences, cultural backgrounds, and socioeconomic factors. By collaborating with dietitians and nutritionists, I will ensure these plans are both scientifically sound and feasible. For example, for a patient with diabetes, the plan will include specific meal ideas, portion sizes, and timing to manage blood sugar levels effectively.
I envision creating community-based programs to extend the reach of nutritional education. Workshops, cooking classes, and support groups can provide a platform for patients and their families to learn together and support one another. These initiatives will focus on practical skills such as reading nutrition labels, preparing healthy meals on a budget, and understanding how to make healthier choices when dining out.
Integrating technology will amplify my efforts as well. Mobile apps and online platforms can provide patients with easy access to nutritional information, track their progress, and offer reminders and tips. Virtual consultations and webinars can also help reach patients who may have difficulty attending in-person sessions, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from nutritional guidance regardless of their circumstances.
Moreover, advocacy will play a crucial role in my career. I will advocate for policies that promote nutritional education in schools and communities, ensuring that future generations grow up with a better understanding of how to nourish their bodies. Collaborating with local governments and non-profits, I will work to improve access to healthy foods in underserved areas, addressing food deserts and making nutritious options more available and affordable.
Ultimately, my approach to patient care will be holistic, recognizing that nutrition is just one piece of the puzzle. If awarded this scholarship I will foster an environment of support and empowerment that will help patients make sustainable lifestyle changes that encompass not only diet but also exercise, mental health, and overall well-being. Every patient’s journey is unique, and my role will be to provide the knowledge, tools, and encouragement needed to navigate that journey successfully.
Big Picture Scholarship
I was sitting alone in a dark movie theater tears streaming down my face, as I watched the final battle scene of Avengers: Endgame. It wasn't just a movie; it was a mirror reflecting my own pain and grief.
You see, I had recently experienced a devastating loss in my life as my grandmother passed away a few days prior to the airing of the movie. We had planned on watching it together since even though she was 76, that didn't stop her from loving action and violence - and of course her hero crush on Thor. The emptiness I felt was suffocating, and I was struggling to find a reason to keep going.
As I watched the characters grapple with their own losses, it was like looking into a mirror. Their pain was my pain, their grief, my grief. I felt seen and understood in a way I hadn't before, and for the first time since my loss, I didn't feel so alone. The theme of sacrifice hit me like a ton of bricks. Watching the Avengers risk everything to save the ones they loved made me realize the depth of my own sacrifices. I had given up so much in the wake of my loss, and seeing that echoed on screen made me feel both validated and understood.
But perhaps the most impactful moment came when I realized that healing isn't a straight line. It's messy and unpredictable, filled with highs and lows. Just like the Avengers, I had to confront my pain head-on and learn to carry it with me, even on the darkest days. Through it all, "Endgame" taught me that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. The resilience of the characters, and their unwavering determination to keep fighting, reminded me that I too could find the strength to carry on.
So, as I left the theater that day, something had shifted inside me. I felt less lost and alone; and instead, I felt more of a glimmer of hope flickering within me. And while the pain of my loss would never fully go away, I knew that I had the strength to keep going, one day at a time. And for that, I will always be grateful to the Avengers and when I think back on it, I know my Grandmother was right next to me, reacting to every crash that happened.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
I remember vividly the moment my world shrank to the four walls of my bedroom. The laughter and noise of school hallways were replaced by an eerie silence, and my safe haven was abruptly taken from me. While my peers reveled in their newfound free time during the Covid quarantine, I descended into what felt like a personal hell.
Quarantine was not just an inconvenience for me; it was a profound isolation that amplified my struggles. My parents' marriage was at its breaking point, and the stability I found at school was stripped away. As a young black teenager, grappling with depression and self-harm, I faced the added challenge of a household that couldn't understand or acknowledge these issues. My cries for help were met with confusion, making my battle with mental health an even lonelier journey.
These experiences profoundly shaped my goals. Initially, I wanted to become a psychologist to help others navigate the same darkness I was experiencing. However, as I struggled to be heard in my own home, self-doubt crept in. How could I help others when I felt so helpless myself? This internal conflict pushed me to explore other ways of making a difference, eventually leading me to the field of dentistry, where I could still contribute to people's well-being in a meaningful way.
My relationships, too, were deeply affected. My parents' reaction to my mental health issues strained our relationship. Their threat to send me to live with my biological mom in Germany if I didn't "snap out of it" made me feel misunderstood and isolated. It took time, but I eventually forgave them, realizing their harshness came from a place of fear and love.
Friendships during this period were equally tumultuous. Trying to fit in with friends who thrived on drama and superficial interests only deepened my sense of alienation. I constantly felt the need to please others, burying my true self in the process. It wasn't until my 11th-grade year that I began to reclaim my identity, standing up for myself and embracing my goofball nature. Letting go of toxic friendships opened the door to finding friends who accepted me for who I am, bringing a sense of belonging and joy back into my life.
Through these trials, my understanding of the world evolved. I realized that the world is filled with people who may never fully understand or agree with your perspective, and that's okay. My mental health journey taught me to accept this reality, embracing different viewpoints as opportunities for growth rather than threats.
Today, I carry these lessons with me, guiding my goals, shaping my relationships, and informing my worldview. My struggles with mental health have made me resilient and empathetic, qualities I hope to bring into my future career and personal life. I've learned to find strength in vulnerability, and in doing so, I've discovered a path forward that is authentically mine.
