When I read Maggie’s story, the first thing that stood out to me was her courage. Leaving your home country to build a life somewhere new is one of the biggest challenges a person can face. It means leaving behind your family, friends, and everything familiar to pursue opportunities that require faith, determination, and resilience. Although our journeys are different, I deeply relate to that experience. I moved from Cape Town, South Africa, to the United States to pursue my education and build a better future for myself. I arrived knowing that I would have to adjust to a new culture, different educational expectations, and life without my family nearby. Being an international student can be lonely at times. There are birthdays, holidays, and family milestones that I have missed because traveling home is not always possible. Whenever life becomes overwhelming, I have learned that I cannot simply give up—I have to keep moving forward. Like Maggie, I had to become independent and learn how to navigate life on my own. One of the qualities I admire most about Maggie is her determination. She challenged herself physically through activities like mountain climbing, skiing, cycling, and diving, but she also challenged herself intellectually by always wanting to learn and become an expert in whatever she pursued. I may not share all of those hobbies, but I relate to her desire to continue growing and improving. Moving to another country required me to step far outside my comfort zone, and every challenge I have faced has helped me become more confident, adaptable, and resilient. Education has always been the reason I keep pushing forward. I am currently studying Elementary and Special Education because I want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children. I believe that teachers have the ability to shape not only a student’s education but also their confidence and belief in themselves. As someone who has experienced the challenges of adapting to a new environment, I hope to create a classroom where every child feels welcomed, respected, and supported, regardless of their background or circumstances. Like Maggie, I believe that knowledge creates opportunities. I enjoy learning, setting goals, and working hard to achieve them. Since coming to the United States, I have remained committed to my education despite the financial, emotional, and personal challenges that often come with being an international student. Every class I complete brings me one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming an educator who positively impacts future generations. Although Maggie’s life ended far too soon, her story continues to inspire others. Her bravery, independence, and dedication to learning remind me why I chose this path. I hope to honor her legacy by continuing to persevere through challenges, making the most of every educational opportunity, and using my degree to make a lasting difference in the lives of others. Receiving this scholarship would not only help support my education but would also encourage me to continue pursuing my goals with the same determination and courage that Maggie demonstrated throughout her life.

Growing up in Cape Town, South Africa, I learned that teachers have the power to shape a child’s future in ways that go far beyond the classroom. Seeing the positive impact that caring educators had on the people around me inspired me to pursue a career in teaching. I want to be someone who not only helps children succeed academically but also encourages them to believe in themselves. The teacher who had the greatest impact on my life was my Grade R teacher, Miss Ronell Solomons. Even though I was only four years old because I started school early, I still remember how she made every child feel seen, valued, and capable. She was incredibly patient, kind, and always made learning enjoyable. Her classroom was a place where I felt safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and simply be myself. Looking back, I realize she helped build my confidence long before I understood how important that would be. She showed me that a teacher’s kindness and encouragement can stay with a student for a lifetime. I have never forgotten how she made me feel, and I hope to have that same impact on the children I teach one day. Moving from South Africa to the United States gave me a new perspective on education. Starting over in a different country and adapting to a new culture was not always easy, but it taught me resilience and strengthened my determination to succeed. As an international student, I understand how meaningful it is to have educators who are patient, supportive, and willing to help students from different backgrounds feel like they belong. Those experiences have inspired me to create a classroom where every child feels welcomed, respected, and encouraged to reach their full potential. I am currently studying Elementary and Special Education because I believe every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. I want to create a classroom where students feel excited to learn, comfortable asking for help, and confident in their abilities. My goal is to be the kind of teacher who not only teaches academic skills but also helps students believe in themselves, just as Miss Ronell Solomons did for me. Receiving this scholarship would help reduce the financial burden of earning my degree and allow me to focus on becoming the best educator I can be. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to making a meaningful difference in the lives of future students and giving them the same encouragement, confidence, and sense of belonging that I experienced in Grade R.

“I have learned that the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence.” To me, this statement means helping students recognize their value, abilities, identity, and potential. Teaching is not only about academics or memorizing information. It is about helping students understand that their voice matters, that they belong, and that they are capable of learning and growing. Many students, especially students with disabilities or learning differences, can sometimes feel overlooked, misunderstood, or limited by the expectations others place on them. A meaningful teacher helps students see beyond those limitations and develop confidence in themselves. This quote strongly connects to why I am passionate about the special education profession. I believe every student deserves the opportunity to feel seen, heard, respected, and included in the classroom. Special education teachers have the unique responsibility of helping students discover strengths that they may not yet recognize in themselves. Sometimes students need additional support, encouragement, patience, or different teaching methods in order to succeed. A special education teacher does more than teach lessons; they help students build independence, confidence, communication skills, and self-worth. My passion for special education grew through my classroom observations and experiences working with students in inclusive and special education environments. During these experiences, I saw how powerful encouragement and understanding can be for students who may struggle academically, socially, emotionally, or physically. I observed students become more engaged and confident when teachers adapted lessons to meet their needs and celebrated their progress, even in small ways. Watching students gain confidence in themselves inspired me to pursue a career where I can make that same positive impact. My mission as a future special education teacher is to create a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and valued for who they are. I want my students to understand that having a disability or learning difference does not define their worth or limit their future. Every student learns differently, and I believe it is the responsibility of educators to adapt instruction in ways that help students succeed. I hope to guide students toward recognizing their own strengths, talents, creativity, and potential while also teaching them important life skills such as self-advocacy, resilience, communication, and independence. I also want to help students experience “their own presence” by encouraging them to express themselves openly and confidently. Whether through speaking, writing, art, technology, or classroom activities, I want students to feel comfortable sharing their ideas and perspectives. Many students simply need someone who believes in them consistently. A supportive teacher can become the person who helps students realize they are capable of far more than they imagined. In the future, I hope to combine special education with instructional design and educational technology to create engaging and accessible learning experiences for diverse learners. Technology can help remove barriers and give students more opportunities to participate and succeed in ways that fit their individual needs. My goal is to continue creating learning environments where students feel empowered rather than discouraged. If I had to describe my journey as a fairy tale, I would picture myself as a guide walking through a forest filled with students who feel lost, unseen, or uncertain of their abilities. Each student carries a lantern that is dim or hidden beneath fear and self-doubt. My role as the teacher is not to carry the lantern for them, but to help them discover how to light it themselves. Along the journey, students begin to realize their own strengths, voices, and confidence. By the end of the story, the forest is no longer dark because each student’s light shines brightly on its own. That is the kind of teacher I hope to become.

My passion for early childhood and special education developed through both my academic journey and my real experiences working with students in classroom settings. From the beginning, I realized that education is about much more than teaching lessons or following a curriculum. Teachers play a major role in shaping children’s confidence, emotional development, communication skills, and future success. Seeing the impact that caring and supportive educators can have on young students inspired me to pursue a career in education and dedicate myself to helping children grow academically and personally. One of the experiences that strengthened my passion for education was completing observation hours in elementary, middle, and special education classrooms. During these experiences, I had the opportunity to watch teachers support students with different learning styles, abilities, personalities, and backgrounds. I saw how important patience, encouragement, and adaptability are in creating a positive learning environment. Some students needed extra academic support, while others simply needed reassurance and motivation to believe in themselves. Watching teachers build trusting relationships with students showed me how meaningful education can be during a child’s early years. My experiences in special education settings especially impacted me because they helped me better understand the importance of inclusion and individualized support. I observed how students thrive when they are given opportunities to express themselves, participate in activities, and learn in ways that match their needs. One experience that stood out to me was teaching an activity focused on self-expression through art. Students were encouraged to communicate emotions using colors, shapes, and creativity. It was rewarding to see students become engaged, excited, and proud of their work. That experience reminded me that every child deserves an environment where they feel safe, understood, and capable of success. I am passionate about early childhood education because I believe the early years are one of the most important stages in a child’s development. Young children are constantly learning about themselves, others, and the world around them. Positive educational experiences during these years can build confidence, curiosity, communication skills, and a lifelong love of learning. I want to be the type of educator who encourages students to ask questions, explore their creativity, and feel supported both academically and emotionally. Currently, I am studying Elementary and Special Education at Frederick Community College and plan to transfer to Towson University to continue pursuing my goals in education. In the future, I hope to combine teaching with instructional design and educational technology to create innovative and inclusive learning experiences for students of all abilities. I believe technology can be a powerful tool for making education more engaging, accessible, and supportive for diverse learners. Receiving this scholarship would help support my educational journey and bring me closer to achieving my goal of becoming an educator who makes a positive difference in students’ lives. I am committed to continuing my education, gaining experience in the classroom, and using my future career to create learning environments where every child feels valued, encouraged, and inspired to succeed.
