Abran Arreola-Hernandez Latino Scholarship
One of the most important experiences in my life was hosting and organizing a mental health fair at my high school, McAllen High School. I was awarded a scholarship from The Shrink Box Organization for my excellence in academics and passion for change. This event was not just about providing resources; it was to spread awareness to my community, and school atmosphere, where it's not often spoken about.
Growing up in the Rio Grande Valley, I was aware that mental health is often overlooked or stigmatized in my community. Many people, especially youth, suffer in silence because they fear judgment or lack access to resources. When I took action to organize the mental health fair, I hoped to create a safe space where students could learn and feel supported. I was motivated by my own experiences of loss and hardship, losing my father to Hurricane Maria in 2017 and watching my mother tirelessly support our family. These personal struggles made me realize how vital mental health awareness is for healing and resilience.
During the planning process, I worked alongside psychiatrists to create this fair, which was admiring learning and collaborating with them. On the day of the event, I watched peers and teachers engage in conversations about mental health openly for the first time. Many students shared their stories and expressed gratitude for the resources provided. That moment made me realize that knowledge and understanding can break down barriers of stigma, and that community action can promote healing.
This experience profoundly shaped my understanding of myself. I discovered that I am capable of leading initiatives and inspiring others to take action. I found strength in my voice and confidence in my ability to advocate for important issues. It also taught me that vulnerability and empathy are strengths, not weaknesses, qualities that foster change.
Beyond personal growth, this experience broadened my view of the world. I recognized that mental health disparities are a widespread issue, especially in underserved communities like mine. It made me aware of the social determinants that influence well-being, such as poverty, lack of access to healthcare, and cultural stigmas. I realized that systemic barriers prevent many from receiving the help they need, and that addressing these issues requires collective effort, policy change, and community involvement.
This experience also influenced my future aspirations. I am passionate to become a lawyer who works to address mental health disparities and promote social justice. I want to use my education to break down barriers and create opportunities for others to access mental health resources and support systems. I believe that understanding and compassion are the foundation for meaningful change, and I am determined to be part of that transformation.
In conclusion, organizing a mental health fair at my high school was an experience that reshaped my understanding of myself, the world, and my community. It taught me the power of awareness, empathy, and collective action. It inspired me to become a leader who advocates for change and supports others through challenges. Most importantly, it reinforced my belief that even small acts can have a lasting impact and help build a healthier, more connected society.
Alger Memorial Scholarship
My experiences have taught me that adversity is not an endpoint but a test of character, one that I have met with perseverance and a desire to help others. Growing up in the Rio Grande Valley, I faced several hardships since I was a little girl. From losing my father to Hurricane Maria in 2017, to navigating the difficulties that come with a community often overlooked and underserved. His absence created a void in my family, and I watched my mother work tirelessly to keep us stable and well. Witnessing her resilience in the face of grief and hardship inspired me to develop my own strength. I understood that setbacks are inevitable, but how we respond defines us.
During that challenging time, I committed myself to academic excellence and community involvement. I knew that education was my pathway to a better future, not just for myself, but for my family and community. I dedicated myself to furthering my studies. In high school, I was invited to be apart in the National Honor Society, where I sought opportunities to serve others. These experiences taught me that even small acts can have a meaningful impact.
One of my proudest accomplishments was organizing a Mental Health Awareness Fair at my high school, McAllen High School. Recognizing how mental health issues are often stigmatized in our community, I wanted to create a space where students could learn, share, and access resources. I was awarded a scholarship from The Shrink Box Organization for my efforts. Seeing my peers and teachers engage in conversations about mental health was a proud moment because it confirmed that awareness can be a catalyst for change.
In addition to this project, I helped establish the McAllen High School Calm Room, a dedicated space for students to relax and manage stress. As a Student Ambassador for the Calm Room, I promoted its purpose to my classmates and contributed to setting up the space. Watching students utilize the room and knowing I played a part in creating a supportive environment felt deeply rewarding.
My commitment to community service extended beyond mental health initiatives. I volunteered at the Rio Grande Valley shelter, where I helped organize food and clothing drives and mentored younger students. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I assisted in distributing supplies and providing support to vulnerable populations. These efforts taught me the importance of empathy and solidarity, values that I strive to embody in all aspects of my life.
In addition to community service, I also was working part-time at Chick-fil-A. Managing school, work, and family responsibilities was challenging, but I learned to manage my time effectively and stay focused on my goals. I enjoy staying busy and working in a fast-paced environments because it has strengthened my communication and teamwork skills, which I consider important in overcoming obstacles and achieving success.
My experiences have not only shaped my character but also created my ambition to pursue a career in law. I believe that the legal system is a powerful tool to advocate for justice and equity, especially for underserved communities like mine. I aspire to attend Penn State University Law School and use my education to fight systemic inequalities, support marginalized populations, and empower others to overcome adversity.
In conclusion, I have proven my resilience through personal loss, academic achievement, and community service. I have learned that life's challenges are opportunities for growth and that true success lies in how we respond. Continuing forward, I am committed to turning my experiences into a positive change, both in my life and in the lives of others.
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
The most impactful lyrics from Olivia Rodrigo’s song "Pretty Isn't Pretty" on her 'GUTS' album is, "I chased some dumb ideal my whole f*cking life / And none of it matters, and none of it ends". This line resonates deeply with me as a 17-year-old navigating the transition from adolescence to adulthood. It demonstrates the exhausting cycle of chasing societal expectations, being told how to look, act, and believe, and realizing that, in the grand scheme of life, many of these pursuits are meaningless and never-ending. As I reflect on my own experiences, this lyric reminds me that true satisfaction and fulfillment come not from following external ideals but from feeling confident in myself and pursuing my own goals and passions.
Growing up, the idea of what life was all about, "be successful," "fit in," "excel academically," and so on. These societal standards create a relentless pressure to meet an ever-moving target. I remember feeling like I needed to look a certain way, act a certain way, and achieve certain milestones to be considered worthy or successful. For years, I chased after these ideals, believing that if I could just attain them, I would finally feel happy or satisfied. But with time, I realized that this chase was exhausting. No matter how much I tried to meet these external expectations, I was never truly fulfilled with myself. Olivia’s lyric illustrates that sense of futility perfectly, an endless pursuit that ultimately doesn’t lead to lasting happiness.
The phrase "none of it matters, and none of it ends" highlights the nature of societal pressures. No matter how much we achieve or how hard we try, there’s always another ideal to chase or a new standard to meet. It’s a never-ending cycle of striving, often rooted in the belief that success, beauty, or acceptance will bring happiness. But over time, I’ve come to see that these external pursuits are superficial. They don’t define who I am or bring true fulfillment. This realization has been both freeing and challenging; it’s freeing because I no longer feel the need to constantly meet impossible standards, but it’s challenging because it’s easy to fall back into the trap of comparing myself to others or feeling like I’m not enough.
When I prioritize my own goals and values, I find more peace and confidence than I ever did trying to meet impossible expectations. This lyric also made me question what truly matters in life. Society often pushes us to believe that validation and achievements are the key to happiness. However, I’ve learned that real fulfillment comes from feeling satisfied with myself and pursuing my own passions. Whether it’s dedicating time to activities I love, setting personal goals, or simply accepting my flaws and strengths, these are the things that bring genuine joy. Olivia’s words remind me that instead of endlessly chasing societal ideals, I should focus on what truly makes me feel fulfilled and authentic. When I prioritize my own goals and values, I find more peace and confidence than I ever did trying to meet certain unrealistic expectations.
In conclusion, Olivia Rodrigo’s lyric "I chased some dumb ideal my whole f*cking life / And none of it matters, and none of it ends" demonstrates the exhausting pursuit of societal expectations. As a young person stepping into a new stage of life, I realize that true happiness comes from feeling satisfied with myself and following my own goals and passions. Life is too short to waste on chasing illusions, what truly matters is believing in myself and pursuing what genuinely makes me happy.
Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
Sabrina Carpenter has become more than just a pop artist for me; she represents a source of comfort, empowerment, and authenticity. Attending her concert in Austin, Texas, on October 28th, 2024, was a memorable experience that deepened my admiration for her music and personality. I chose to dress in a mini blue dress paired with classic white long boots and heels, reflecting my admiration for her concert style. That night, I felt a personal connection to her music, and seeing all the beautiful women there together that night just singing along, has significantly impacted me both emotionally and personally.
One of the reasons Sabrina resonates so deeply with me is the way she approaches her songwriting. Sabrina’s music offers a more nuanced perspective, not just about heartbreaks or situationships. Her lyrics don’t just revolve around boys or romantic disappointment; they often explore themes of self-love, resilience, and personal growth. For many fans, including myself, her music feels like a comforting conversation with an older sister who understands the struggles of growing up and navigating the complexities of life.
This approach to songwriting is especially meaningful in an industry where there is a high stigma that female artists only write about heartbreak or guys being “dumb”. Sabrina challenges that stereotype by creating music that uplifts and empowers her listeners. Her songs are not only relatable but also serve as a source of encouragement during difficult times. Personally, her song "Busy Women" stands out to me because it primarily focuses about self-acceptance and finding strength within oneself which has helped me through moments of self-doubt and insecurity. Her authenticity makes her music feel genuine, and that creates a personal connection that goes beyond just entertainment.
Attending her concert was an experience that reinforced these feelings. Seeing her perform live, surrounded by fans, was inspiring. Her stage presence radiates confidence, kindness, and a genuine passion for her music. It’s clear at she cares deeply about her fans and strives to create an inclusive space where everyone can feel seen and heard. Her music, combined with her engaging personality, makes her more than just a pop star, she feels like a role model and a friend.
Moreover, Sabrina’s career trajectory demonstrates her dedication to growth and authenticity. She started as a Disney star, but she has continuously evolved as an artist, exploring different genres and themes. Her willingness to be vulnerable and honest in her music, whether addressing personal struggles or societal issues, sets her apart from many of her peers. This authenticity is one of the qualities I admire most about her. It reminds me that success isn’t just about fame but about staying true to oneself and using one’s platform to inspire others.
Her journey encourages me to stay true to my values and to embrace my individuality, even in the face of societal pressures. Her music has inspired and guided my personal growth, reminding me that I am not alone in my struggles and that I have the strength to overcome challenges.
In conclusion, Sabrina Carpenter’s music and persona have had a profound impact on me. She is more than just a singer; she is a source of comfort and inspiration. Her lyrics, performances, and authentic personality resonate on a personal level, providing reassurance and encouragement. Attending her concert was a reaffirmation of these feelings, and I am grateful for her presence in my life. She has truly become a role model, and I look forward to seeing how her career continues to evolve and inspire others just like me.

My name is Chanel De Leon Bombela, and I am a passionate senior at McAllen High School. Throughout my life, I have been influenced by my experiences and my deep commitment to helping others. One of the most significant events that shaped my perspective was the loss of my father during Hurricane Maria. This tragic experience opened my eyes to the numerous challenges many individuals face regarding mental health and emotional well-being. Witnessing the struggles of my family and friends during this difficult time inspired me to pursue a career in psychiatry, where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those dealing with mental health issues.
My goal is to become a psychiatrist and advocate for mental health awareness. I firmly believe that mental health is just as important as physical health, yet many people still encounter stigma and obstacles when seeking help. For instance, I have seen how my peers often hesitate to discuss their emotional struggles due to fear of judgment. This realization fueled my desire to not only provide effective mental health care but also to promote an understanding of mental health within the community.
I plan to make a positive impact on the world by combining my clinical knowledge with a commitment to advocacy. My education in biology at the University of Rio Grande Valley will provide me with a solid foundation in the scientific principles essential for understanding human behavior and mental health disorders. I am eager to learn about the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence mental health, as this knowledge is critical for effective treatment.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I intend to engage in community outreach and educational initiatives. Throughout high school, I have been involved in various organizations, including the National Honor Society and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), where I have honed my leadership skills and organized events focused on mental health awareness. These experiences have shown me the importance of education and community support in addressing mental health issues. I l plan to create programs that empower individuals to prioritize their mental well-being and ensure that everyone, especially those in underserved communities, has access to vital mental health resources.
I aim to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health by fostering open discussions and promoting healthy coping strategies. By advocating for mental health education in schools and community organizations, I hope to create a culture where discussing mental health is normalized, making it easier for individuals to seek help when needed.
Ultimately, my journey is driven by a desire to honor my father’s memory and ensure that others receive the support they deserve during difficult times. I am committed to being a compassionate advocate and practitioner, working tirelessly to make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of others.
