My name is Chandler Blackwell, and I am about to start my Junior year at the University of California, Berkeley. As a recent transfer student, I am majoring in Molecular Cell and Biology with an emphasis on Pre-Med/Immunology and Molecular Medicine. My journey to this point has been anything but conventional. Despite performing well in foundational science courses like chemistry, biology, and physics during high school, I constantly grappled with self-doubt and a lack of confidence in my abilities. Unlike some of my peers who seemed to effortlessly grasp scientific concepts, I had to invest significant time and effort to achieve good grades.
When it came time to choose a college major, my interest in science, specifically the medical field, was met with skepticism. Friends and family would caution me on the challenges of a medical career and questioning my decision. This skepticism undermined my confidence, and I initially succumbed to my doubts, enrolling in the University of Arizona as a business major. While my time there was enjoyable, I quickly realized that neither the environment nor the major was fulfilling. After much thought, I decided to pursue my true passion for science and medicine, transferring to a California Community College to facilitate the transition.
This decision has proven to be one of the best I have ever made. The initial rigor of STEM courses required a significant adjustment, but with determination and the support of resources like study groups, I managed to succeed. I also joined the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) program, which provided a supportive community of like-minded STEM students, specialized counseling, workshops, and research opportunities. This involvement has been crucial in shaping me into a well-rounded STEM student.
My aspiration to become a doctor was ignited at the age of 13 when I underwent hip surgery. I viewed the doctors who treated me as medical rockstars, marveling at their ability to help people. This experience, coupled with my personal connection to liver disease, has fueled my passion for medical research. My grandfather passed away from acute liver failure, and my mother works in pharmaceuticals, specifically researching drugs for liver diseases like Hepatitis B and C. These personal experiences inspired me to delve into medical research, particularly concerning liver failure.
I had the privilege of working in a research lab at USC Medical School for ten weeks in the summer of 2023, conducting research on acute liver failure and patient rejection of new liver transplants. During this time, I utilized Mass Image Cytometry and programming in R to create diagrams and process liver samples. This hands-on experience solidified my desire to continue researching liver diseases and ultimately contribute to advancements in this field.
As an African American man, I am aware of the disproportionate impact of liver failure on our community. African American men are statistically more likely to die from liver failure than any other group in the United States. My goal is to contribute to the research and development of treatments and cures for liver failure while addressing the underlying causes, whether they be molecular or lifestyle-related.
Through my medical career, I aspire to make a positive impact on the world by advancing our understanding and treatment of liver diseases. I am committed to bridging the gap in health disparities, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of background, have access to effective medical care and treatment. By following my passion for science and medicine, I hope to honor my grandfather's memory and contribute to a healthier future for all.
