Sharen and Mila Kohute Scholarship
I am a girl from a small West Virginia town who dreams of becoming an architect. I come from a divorced family that does not get along very well. I will be a first-generation student in my immediate family and I will be attending Fairmont State University in the fall of 2024.
The one person who has made the biggest impact on my life is my drafting teacher, Ms.Haymond. I came to her class in my junior year of high not knowing anything about drafting and not having a single clue about what I wanted to do with my life. Ms.Haymond helped me discover my passion for architecture and helped me realize my full potential. She never gave up on me, even when I wanted to.
She believed in me so much that she paired Audrey, a second-year drafting student, and me together to design a new kneeling bench for the First Lady's " Knight of the Golden Horseshoe" knighting ceremony. Our design made it into the top four! We then got to go to Charleston and got to meet the First Lady. We placed second overall. The next day we got a call from the Curator of West Virginia and they liked our idea so much, they wanted us to design not one but two podiums for the governor of West Virginia!
I am now in my second year of drafting, and Ms.Haymon is challenging me with new and bigger projects. I am currently designing a barn for someone she knows.
Ms.Haymond has impacted my life in so many ways. She helped me find my passion and taught me so many new skills, like public speaking. She has also helped me open my mind to new ideas and how to take criticism well. She reminds me often, that she believes I will do great in the architecture program at Fairmont.
The program itself has impacted my life as well. I can now read and draw up blueprints. I know how to use three Autodesk software, autocad, Revit, and Inventor. Anything I can draw on Inventor, I can now print on a 3-D printer.
If it wasn't for the amazing role model I've had for the past two years, I don't know where I would be now. I couldn't have made it this far without her. I will always be grateful for her and everything she has done for me.
“Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
There are so many amazing characters to choose from, but my dream team would be Eleven, Dustin, and Max.
Eleven would make an amazing member of the dream time, not only because she has super powers, but because she has a kind heart. She's always thinking of her friends. Eleven has been faced with so many challeneges, from Papa to Vecna, but she never gave up. When she was weak, she continued to fight.
Everyone could agree that Dustin is the life of the party. He always makes everyone smile and is joking around. The main reason I would have Dustin on my dream team is because of his brains. He is the smartest kid in the group and can come up with a solution to any problem that he may face. He may be scared at times, but he always faces the danger and makes everyone laugh in the process.
Last but not least, I would have Max on my team. She's a dare devil and isn't afarid to speak her mind. She faces the problem head on. Max may seem like a loner at times, but she is a caring friend. She has her friends back through thick and thin. She is the one that will put on a brave face, even though she is falling apart inside.
These three are capable of so much and would be able to take down any threat. From brains, to demation, to friend ship, anything is possible.
Disney Super Fan Scholarship
What does Disney mean to me? Disney is my escape from reality. Whenever I’m having a bad day, I sit down on the couch and turn on a good Disney movie. Disney shows me that there is always hope and there is always a beautiful ending in the worst situations.
My favorite Disney princess is belle. She was my grandma’s favorite as well. Whenever I fell down and miss her, watching Beauty and the Beast makes me feel close to her again. I can also relate to Merida from the movie Brave. Her parents tell her how she should live, but it’s not what she wants. She goes after what she wants and shows what’s she’s capable of.
Disney also teaches me how they’re many ways to handle any situation. That there is a good path through life and that you’ll face evil people, but as long as you stay with what you believe in and don’t let them get in your way you can get past them and get your happy ending.
My favorite Disney Original Movies are the Descendants series. Those kids come from evil families, but they get a second chance to have an amazing life. At first they were bad, but then they learn that they can be good and that’s what they chose. Throughout all three movies they face many challenges that test their goodness. They want to give up at times, but their friends are able to show them that they are loved and cares for. And that they are good and worth so much.
These movies teach me that even though you have a bad past, you can still be a good person. If you have the right people to be with you, you can do anything.
I’ve never been able to visit Disney land, but I want to take a trip around Halloween or Christmas time. Halloween is my favorite holiday and I love the Nightmare Before Christmas Movie. It’s a goal of mine to take a picture with Jack and Sally.
In conclusion, Disney is my get away. It’s my way to escape. Through the stories, the lessons you learn, the music you can sing and dance to, and the amazing characters you get to see, it’s truly a magical thing. No matter how old I may get I will always love Disney. And I can’t wait to show my future kids the magic from Disney!
Tam and Betsy Vannoy Memorial Scholarship
Throughout the past few months, I have helped my Aunt and Uncle, that has just moved back from the Netherlands, find the perfect furniture and decor for their temporary home. They had to move back to West Virginia, due to my aunt being sick and needing surgery. During this journey, I learned how to listen to clients and understand what they are looking for. I was able to pick out comfortable colors, furniture, and decor to make her recovery more relaxing.
I have also helped another aunt get her old house move-in ready for her. The previous renters hadn't taken care of the house and it needed a lot of work done to it. I helped clean, move furniture, decorate, and learned a few things. Like how to put up a TV, how to clean up water after a fluid, and how to remove mold and mold smells.
Helping them made me want to do more, and help more people become comfortable in their living spaces and make them livable. Although these were small projects for family members I learned a lot and it meant so much to my family and me. Helping them made me feel good emotionally, knowing they have a place to live that they love and that I helped them achieve that. My family helps me learn in many ways how to achieve my goal
I recently entered a contest for designing a new knighting bench for the Golden Horseshoe in Charleston. I can learn how to work with little materials and help my fellow students by designing them an amazing bench, if I am picked, for the ones that have the honor of being knighted.
There is still a lot to learn, but I am more than ready for the challenge. I want to do more to help my family and the community. I want to help build the community up one building or family at a time. I've always wanted to help the community and I love designing, so I want to pursue my higher education in architecture, that way I can help shape the community. Help develop community buildings, forever homes, and possibly even government buildings and parks.
I will work as hard as I can to reach my goal. I plan to get my master's in architecture at Fairmont State and continue my journey there. I will make a difference in this world, and I can thank my family for allowing me to help them.
Big Picture Scholarship
The movie that had the biggest impact on my life is the film "Miracles from Heaven". This film is a great way to look at life. Whatever bad comes your way, keep in faith and something wonderful will come in the end.
The little girl becomes very ill and they go to many doctors to figure out what is wrong. After finding out what is happening to the little girl, they try to help her but sadly nothing works. Her mother starts to lose faith. They have to sell many of their belongings to help pay for the medical bills.
The little was out side playing with her sisters in a tree, suddenly she had fallen into the tree. As soon as her parents had heard they ran over and started praying. They thought they had lost their daughter, after everything that has happened, they thought that this was the way she was going to go to heaven. The fire department was able to get her out of the tree, but she was practically dead. They were able to save her, but once they had gotten to the hospital, they had noticed that she had no broken bones and that she was cured. The accident had cured her illness. She was a happy and healthy child again. The doctors could not believe it. Her mother knew it was a mirical for heaven.
This movie taught me, no matter what I am going through, keep my head up and keep in faith. God has a plan and it is happening for a reason. There is always a rainbow and the end of the storm. It may seem like the storm will never end, but it will one day and you will realize that it was all worth it. God wil always have your back.
Another things the movie taught me was that whenever you are going through hard times throughout your life, you will learn who your real friends are. You will learn how to deal with change and how to let go. How to put your trust in God and let him guide the way. The over all message in this movie is that there are miracles even though you can not see them. There is a reason for everything and it may hurt you now, but it will make you stronger as a person and at times it will bring your family closer together.
Appalachian Region Vocational Scholarship
I come from a family where a few of the men worked a lot in carpentry. Ever since I was a little girl I've loved watching my father work in the garage building amazing furniture. All my life I've loved creating things, but I never knew what career I could do to pursue that. One day I came across " HGTV" and I fell in love with it. I knew that is what I wanted to do with my life. Not only would I be able to be creative, but I would also be able to help people and give them their dream homes.
Throughout my career, my goal is to build a better community. Build more schools, and community buildings, and make the world a beautiful place. I want to help people achieve their dream homes to raise their families and make memories. My overall goal is to not only make the world a better place but to make it a beautiful place to live, raise a family, or to even vacation.
My first step is getting certified in drafting during my senior year of high school. I am currently enrolled at United Technical Center in Clarksburg WV. I will be a completer at the end of my junior year of high school, but I plan on attending my senior year to specialize in architecture.
After I graduate High School, I plan on attending Fairmont State University and majoring in Architecture. During my team at Fairmont state, I plan on minoring in Graphic Design Technology or possibly Health or teaching. My goal is to get my Master of Architecture Degree. After college, I may also go to Pierpoint for Interior Design.
Once I have achieved my goals and have been in the industry for a while, I plan on starting my own business. It will focus on building up the community. Rather if that's remolding a school or a public library, or building a brand new government building.
Finally, after making a difference in the community, I want to take a step down and teach architecture and drafting. The kids today are our future and it's our responsibility to help them find their calling in life and that is what I plan to do. Teaching the children of the future how to make the community an even better place to live.
I have many plans for the future of our community. I will work hard to achieve these goals, not only for myself but for our community.
