WinnerOne moment in my life changed my entire understanding of humility and kindness.
In 2023, my parents made the decision to open our home to four immigrants arriving from Haiti while continuing to care for our family. As a new high school student, I struggled to understand why they would make such a life-changing decision. My perspective became a representation of what I believed I was losing—my privacy, my comfort, and the familiarity of our home. For weeks, I carried frustration without truly considering what these individuals had experienced before arriving at our door.
One afternoon, my mother came to me with words that I will never forget: “Your anger is their hurt. It is only when you discover humility and understanding that you’ll find the ability to give more than you have.”
Those words pushed me to see far beyond myself. For the first time, I stopped focusing on my own discomfort and began recognizing the courage it took for these individuals to leave everything familiar behind in search of safety and hope. I truly saw the dedication from my parents to provide for others even when their hands were full. I saw their gratitude for things I often took for granted and began to understand generosity is not measured by how much we possess, but by how willing we are to share what we have.
As my perspective changed, so did my action. I became more intentional about serving others and making sure they felt appreciated. I learned to approach people with empathy rather than judgment. My experience has shaped the way I lead in my school, my community, and every group I am a part of. By becoming a leader for others who once thought from a limited perspective, I found a way to experience, create and provide true kindness in my community. Striving to create spaces where people feel welcomed, valued, and understood because I know firsthand how life-changing compassion can be.
If not for that experience, I wouldn’t have found such value in humility the way I do today. I am deeply grateful that God blessed me with parents whose hearts are rooted in service and faith. They instilled in me that true leadership is not about superiority or recognition—it is about lifting others, especially when it requires sacrifice.
That is a lesson that I will carry with me throughout college and into every community that I am involved in. As an aspiring music educator, being able to provide even the smallest lesson of my experiences for those part of the younger generation is incredibly important to me.
