While it’s tough to achieve success in the world, it’s even more challenging to understand and predict one’s own identity and future. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” There comes a time in life when obstacles are thrown at you that you can’t avoid. Unfortunately, one of my obstacles was coming to the United States at such a young age. I was around 5 years old when my parents decided to migrate from Mexico to the United States. I remember the day when my mother told me, “You’re staying here, everything will be fine.” I was so little and innocent that I didn’t understand what was going on. I remember crying in her arms and telling her, “Mom, don’t leave me, I’m scared.” My parents reassured me, saying, “Everything will be fine.” We will see you in a couple of days.” I had tears in my eyes as I watched them walk away. When I first set foot in the United States, it required a lot of adjustments. Entering the education system as a newcomer from a different country was one of the hardest obstacles I had to overcome. It involved getting used to a new language, different school rules, and unfamiliar cultural norms. Many people didn’t understand my background or language, and some didn’t believe in me. But I continued to pursue my education, and eventually, it became my passion. moving to the United States at such a young age was filled with challenges and uncertainties, but these experiences have shaped my identity and resilience. As Martin Luther King Jr. emphasized, it’s crucial to keep moving forward despite the obstacles. The initial fear and anxiety I felt transformed into strength and determination. My journey continues, and I am committed to embracing each step with perseverance and hope, knowing that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. This journey has shaped me into the person I am today and has had a profound impact on my life. The support from my family and the friendships I’ve made along the way have been invaluable. They have taught me the importance of community and the power of kindness. As I look toward the future, I am confident that these experiences have prepared me to face any adversity with courage and optimism. My story is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the belief that with persistence, anything is possible.  In conclusion winning this scholarship could really help me achieve my american dream. I want to be an immigration lawyer. This has always been my dream because my desire is to help those around me and those in need. Coming from an immigrant background I feel as thought Ill be able to make a change in the system.

But I continued to pursue my education, and eventually, it became my passion. When I started high school, there was one question everyone asked: “What do you want to do after you graduate?” As a non-citizen, I never had an answer because I feared that my immigration status would prevent me from pursuing higher education. I often wondered why my parents brought me to the United States. They sacrificed so much just so I could have a better chance at a more advanced education. My parents are my motivation for pursuing higher education. Their wise words have always stayed with me: “The United States is a place of opportunity and growth.” That’s why I’m here, to grow as an individual and become someone in this country. Despite the challenges I’ve faced—adjusting to a new country and education system—I’ve shown remarkable strength and perseverance. As I continue to push forward, I remember the strength I discovered when I first stepped foot in the United States. That strength will continue to guide me through any obstacles I encounter. Lindsey Vonn ‘GREAT Starts With GRIT’ Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have faced numerous obstacles and challenges that have tested my resilience and determination. Embodying a gritty mindset has been essential in overcoming these hurdles and achieving my goals. Grit, defined as passion and perseverance for long-term goals, has been my guiding principle, helping me navigate through difficult times and emerge stronger. One of the most significant challenges I faced was during my high school years. Balancing academic responsibilities with my after school work schedule and personal commitments was overwhelming. There were moments when the workload seemed insurmountable, and the pressure to excel in all areas felt crushing. However, I adopted a gritty mindset, reminding myself of my long-term goals and the importance of perseverance. Instead of giving in to stress, I developed effective time management strategies, set realistic goals, and maintained a positive attitude. This determination not only helped me excel academically but also allowed me to participate actively in after school activities and community service, leading to a well-rounded high school experience. Another major obstacle came when I decided to pursue a challenging career path in a competitive field. The journey was fraught with rejections, setbacks, and moments of self-doubt. However, I refused to let these obstacles deter me. I embraced the concept of grit, understanding that success is not an overnight achievement but a result of sustained effort and resilience. I sought feedback from my mentors in order to continuously improved my skills, and remain committed to my vision. Each rejection became a learning opportunity, and each setback fueled my determination to work hard ven harder. This gritty mindset ultimately led to my acceptance into a prestigious program, proving that perseverance and passion can overcome even the toughest challenges. Personal challenges, such as dealing with health issues or family crises, have also tested my grit. During these times, it was essential to stay focused on my goals while managing the emotional and physical toll of the situation. I learned to prioritize self-care, seek support from loved ones, and maintain a positive outlook. By embodying a gritty mindset, I was able to navigate these personal challenges without losing sight of my aspirations. In conclusion, embodying a gritty mindset has been crucial in overcoming the obstacles and challenges in my life. Whether in academic pursuits, career ambitions, or personal struggles, grit has provided the resilience and determination needed to persevere. By staying passionate and committed to my long-term goals, I have been able to turn setbacks into opportunities for growth and success. This mindset will continue to guide me as I face future challenges, reminding me that with grit, anything is possible.
