Bio

I am currently pursuing my Electrical Technician education at Lincoln Tech Columbia after earning Associate degrees in Computer Science and Information Systems from Montgomery College. My goal is to combine my knowledge of electrical technology, electronics, networking, and cybersecurity to eventually build my own company that provides electrical, electronic, and cybersecurity services. I currently work as a Service Helper Technician for a pool renovation company, where I gain hands-on experience in plumbing, construction, and technical work. Outside of school and work, I enjoy staying active and continuously learning new skills, including playing guitar. I am also fluent in reading, writing, and speaking Twi, a second language that has helped me develop stronger communication skills and connect with others. Receiving this scholarship would mean a great deal to me. Balancing work and school can be stressful, and financial responsibilities can make it difficult to give my education the attention it deserves. This scholarship would reduce that burden and give me more time to focus on my studies, develop my technical skills, and prepare for my future career and business endeavors. I am committed to continuing my education, learning new skills, and building a future where I can use my knowledge to create opportunities for myself and others.

I refuse to let student debt control my life because I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to become what they aspire to be. To me, debt is more than a number on a statement. It can become a financial hold that delays someone's goals, limits their choices, and forces them to give up on dreams they worked hard to pursue. I am determined not to let that happen to me. I have been working while attending school since my senior year of high school. I earned my Associate Degree in Computer Science and Information Systems at Montgomery College, and I am now pursuing Electrical Technician training at Lincoln Tech. I have largely learned to manage my education and expenses on my own because my parents have had their own financial responsibilities supporting my family. Working while going to school has required sacrifices, including time with friends, sports, and activities I enjoy. My current job can require 7–10 hour days and sometimes out-of-state travel, but I continue working because I want to take responsibility for building my future. My father is a major reason I have developed this mindset. I watched him work tirelessly to provide for our family, even when circumstances were difficult. He taught me that responsibility is not something you wait for; it is something you accept. I want to carry that example into my own life by becoming financially independent, supporting my future family, and becoming someone people and organizations can rely on. My faith in God has also given me the resilience to continue when things become difficult. When I feel overwhelmed by school, work, and financial responsibilities, I pray and remind myself that temporary struggles should not determine my future. I believe God has given me the strength and wisdom to keep moving forward. I also refuse to let other people's assumptions define me. People may underestimate me because of my appearance, the car I drive, how I speak, or my background. I have learned that focusing on what people think of me only slows down my progress. Instead, I focus on proving myself through my work. Whether I am studying electrical systems, learning cybersecurity, or spending hours studying the financial markets because I aspire to become a day trader, I continue developing myself. My plan for addressing student debt is to work, budget carefully, pursue scholarships, and avoid borrowing more than necessary. This scholarship would reduce the financial pressure I face and allow me to dedicate more time to my education instead of constantly worrying about how I will pay for it. Ultimately, I want to become a business owner who creates opportunities for others. I want my education to be the foundation of that future—not a debt that prevents me from reaching it. I am willing to work for my dreams, but with this scholarship, I can pursue them with greater freedom and fewer financial barriers.
Bick First Generation Scholarship
I grew up watching my father work tirelessly to build a better life for our family, and his example became one of the greatest influences on who I want to become. When my parents came to America, they were starting their lives from the ground up. We lived in low-income housing and moved several times as rent increased. My father was our main breadwinner, and I watched him work long hours, sometimes even on his days off, without complaining. He taught me that hard work is necessary, but he also taught me that nothing is possible without God. His faith and perseverance became qualities I deeply looked up to. My interest in electrical work began with my love for technology. Growing up, I could spend hours using computers, phones, cables, speakers, and audio equipment. Whenever relatives needed help setting up a device, connecting a television, fixing Wi-Fi, or dealing with account security, I was the person they called. At church, I also became involved with microphones, speakers, and production equipment. Eventually, I realized that something I naturally enjoyed could become a career where I could use my skills to help others. One of my biggest obstacles has been balancing education with work. I have worked while attending school since my senior year of high school. My current job can require 7–10 hour days and sometimes out-of-state travel, making it difficult to balance work, school, and studying. I have sacrificed time with friends, sports, and even the gym, which were important parts of my life. There have been moments when I felt like giving up, but I would get on my knees and pray. I truly believe God has given me the wisdom, strength, and confidence to continue when I felt like I could not. My goals extend far beyond simply earning a paycheck. Within five years, I want to earn my journeyman’s license while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science and cybersecurity. Within ten years, I want to own an LLC combining electrical, technology, and cybersecurity services. I want to create jobs, serve my community, and build a company people can trust. This scholarship would help me move toward that future by reducing the financial pressure of gas, transportation, food, rent, insurance, and school materials. It would allow me to spend more time studying and less time worrying about whether I can afford to miss work. Most importantly, I want to honor my parents’ sacrifices. My father spent his life carrying our family forward. One day, I hope to carry that baton for him, provide for my own family, and, by God’s grace, retire my parents and take them back to Africa to enjoy the life they worked so hard to build.

I remember watching my father come home exhausted after long days of work, yet he never complained. When my parents came to America, they were starting their lives from the ground up. We lived in low-income housing and moved several times as rent increased. My father was the main breadwinner, and watching him sacrifice his time, energy, and comfort for our family taught me that hard work, faith, and perseverance are what carry a person through life. One day, I hope to take the baton from him and become the person who provides for my own family. My interest in electrical work began with something I was already passionate about: technology. Growing up, I could spend hours using computers, phones, cables, speakers, and audio equipment. Whenever relatives needed help setting up a device, connecting a television, fixing Wi-Fi, or securing their accounts, I was the person they called. At church, I also became involved with microphones, speakers, and production equipment. I have worked while attending school since my senior year of high school. My current job can require 7–10 hour days and sometimes out-of-state travel, making it difficult to maintain the time and energy necessary for school. I have sacrificed time with friends, sports, and even going to the gym—things that were once a major part of my life. There were moments when quitting seemed easier, but I would get on my knees and pray. My faith has given me the wisdom and resilience to keep moving forward, including the hard work my father has put in. My goal is not simply to earn a paycheck. Within five years, I want to earn my journeyman's license while continuing toward a bachelor's degree in computer science and cybersecurity. Within ten years, I want to own an LLC that combines electrical, technology, and cybersecurity services, employs others, and becomes a company people can trust. I want to become someone people can rely on. This scholarship would help me turn that vision into reality. The costs of gas, transportation, food, rent, insurance, and school materials add pressure while I am working and studying. Financial support would allow me to reduce my work hours when necessary, dedicate more time to studying, and enter each class prepared to learn. Most importantly, it would bring me closer to the day when I can give my parents the opportunity to rest after everything they sacrificed for me and my siblings. My ultimate dream is to retire them and take them back to Africa to enjoy the life they worked so hard to build for us.
Track to the Trades
Ever since I was a child, I have had a passion for electronics. I was always curious about how things worked, and that curiosity eventually grew into a passion for electrical work and technology. However, my greatest inspiration for pursuing the trades comes from my father and the life he sacrificed to build for our family. My father grew up in a modest home in Ghana and was raised by a single mother who gave everything she had to raise him. They did not have many resources, but she taught him the value of hard work, pride, and resilience. When my father came to the United States, he arrived with big dreams but very little money. He knew that creating a better life for his future family would require sacrifice, so he started from the bottom. He entered the trades, working in plumbing while learning HVAC, electrical work, and other areas of construction. He worked long hours doing physically demanding jobs while also continuing his education and earning an associate degree. He wanted more than a paycheck; he wanted the knowledge and skills to build something lasting. After bringing my mother from Ghana, my parents began building their life together. I remember growing up with limited resources and watching them make sacrifices for our family. Eventually, through years of hard work, my father was able to move us from low-income housing into a beautiful home. As a child, I saw a house. As I grew older, I realized it represented something much greater: my father's sacrifices, determination, and love for his family. Watching him taught me that the trades can be much more than a career. They can provide stability, create businesses, and change the future of an entire family. His journey is the reason I want to pursue electrical and electronics. I am currently studying Electrical and Electronics at Lincoln Tech Columbia. Before Lincoln Tech, I earned Associate degrees in Information Systems and Computer Science from Montgomery College. I also work for a pool renovation and construction company, where I am gaining hands-on experience and learning how to wire pump motors. My goal is to become highly skilled in electrical work, gain commercial experience, and eventually create my own LLC combining electrical work with technology, networking, and cybersecurity. Balancing school, work, and supporting my family has been one of my greatest challenges. There are days when I feel pulled in different directions, but I continue because I know what I am working toward. This scholarship would help relieve the financial pressure of tuition, tools, books, transportation, and equipment. More importantly, it would give me the opportunity to spend more time focusing on my education instead of constantly worrying about how I will afford it. When I feel tired or discouraged, I think about where my father started and everything he endured so his children could have opportunities he never had. My education is not only for myself; it is a way of honoring my family's journey and becoming the person they believed I could become. My father built our family's foundation through sacrifice and hard work. I want to honor him and my grandmother by continuing that legacy. My dream is to build a successful business, provide stability for my future family, and show that their sacrifices were not made in vain.
