Richard (Dunk) Matthews II Scholarship
Since I was in eighth grade, I’ve been fascinated by how heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems work. What started as a curiosity about how air conditioners keep homes cool and comfortable quickly grew into a passion for understanding the entire HVAC trade. During my junior year of high school, I got the rare opportunity to take an HVAC course early at my local technical college. From the moment I started, I knew I had found something I truly loved. I took every chance I could to learn more—whether it was about brazing, reading schematics, or identifying system components. I pushed myself to master every skill, and before long, I was at the top of my class both in performance and grades.
My dedication didn’t go unnoticed. One day, a local HVAC company came to observe our class, and after seeing my work, they contacted my instructor asking about me. Shortly after, they offered me a job. That summer, I officially began working in the HVAC field, and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The work was hard—long hours, tight spaces, and sometimes extreme weather—but I loved every part of it. Knowing that I was helping families sleep comfortably at night and keeping homes safe made every tough job worth it. My coworkers told me I was one of the best new guys they had ever hired, and before the summer ended, they asked me to come back full-time after I graduate.
Now, I’m in my second year of HVAC training at school, and I recently spent my fall break working with the same company to keep gaining hands-on experience. Every time I go to work, I learn something new. Whether it’s troubleshooting a unit or fine-tuning my brazing skills, I can see myself getting better each day. HVAC has become more than just a career path for me—it’s something I genuinely enjoy and feel naturally gifted at.
After I graduate high school, my plan is to finish my final year of the HVAC program at the college while continuing to work part-time in the field. My goal is to master every area of the trade, from residential systems to large-scale commercial units. I want to become not only a certified HVAC technician but also a leader who others in the trade can look up to.
Giving back to my community is an important part of my future plans. I know how crucial HVAC work is for people’s health, safety, and comfort—especially in hot summers and cold winters. Once I’m fully certified, I hope to offer affordable repair services to families who may struggle to afford them. I also want to mentor younger students who are interested in trades like HVAC, just like my teacher did for me.
This trade has already opened so many doors for me, and I’m determined to keep learning, working hard, and helping others along the way. HVAC isn’t just a job for me—it’s a career I’m proud to build my life around.
Leading Through Humanity & Heart Scholarship
From a young age, I have always had a strong desire to help others and make a difference in their lives. My passion for fitness began when I realized how much physical health can influence not only the body but also the mind. At one point in my life, I was struggling with discipline and motivation, but when I started working out consistently, I began to see changes that went far beyond my physical appearance. I became more confident, focused, and positive. This transformation sparked my interest in human health and wellness. I wanted to learn how the body works, how exercise can improve quality of life, and how I could help others experience the same changes that I did. These experiences led me to pursue a career as a personal trainer and, eventually, a physical therapist. I believe that health is one of the greatest gifts we can have, and helping others achieve it is one of the most rewarding things a person can do. My values of compassion, discipline, and perseverance continue to guide me as I work toward this goal.
Empathy, to me, means truly understanding and sharing the feelings of another person. In the world of health and fitness, empathy is not just a soft skill—it is a crucial tool for building trust, connection, and progress. As a future personal trainer or physical therapist, empathy allows me to see my clients not just as bodies to be trained, but as individuals with unique stories, struggles, and goals. Everyone’s journey to health looks different. Some people are overcoming injury, others are battling self-doubt, and some may simply need guidance on where to start. By approaching each person with empathy, I can create a supportive environment where clients feel heard, respected, and motivated to improve.
Empathy also prevents the trainer-client relationship from becoming one-sided or overly critical. Without empathy, a trainer might unintentionally come across as judgmental or harsh, which can discourage clients and damage their confidence. I’ve learned that people respond best when they feel understood rather than attacked. When a client trusts that I genuinely care about their progress, they are more likely to listen, stay consistent, and believe in their potential. Understanding that no two clients are the same helps me adapt my approach—whether that means changing a workout plan, providing encouragement, or simply being patient when progress is slow.
Through a human-centered lens, my goal is to ensure that every person I work with feels valued and capable of transformation. I don’t just want to help people lift weights or recover from injury; I want to help them build a sustainable lifestyle that improves their physical and mental well-being. To do this, I will continue to study anatomy, nutrition, and exercise science while also improving my communication and interpersonal skills. In every session, I plan to focus on listening first, then guiding with understanding.
Ultimately, my passion for health and wellness stems from my belief that change is possible for everyone. I’ve experienced firsthand how fitness can reshape a person’s mindset and life, and I want to use my knowledge to inspire that same transformation in others. Whether I’m working as a personal trainer or a physical therapist, I will approach every client with empathy, patience, and respect. My mission is not only to help others reach their goals but to empower them to believe that they can. Through this mindset, I hope to make a meaningful impact on the health and happiness of those I serve.
Big Picture Scholarship
While many people can point to a specific movie that has changed their lives, I cannot say the same. For me, it was not a traditional film that had the greatest impact, but rather a Japanese animated series called Demon Slayer. Although it may seem unconventional to draw life-changing lessons from a cartoon, the story, characters, and messages in Demon Slayer profoundly shaped who I am today. It inspired me to change my habits, develop discipline, and discover my passion for fitness — ultimately setting me on the path toward becoming the best version of myself.
At its core, Demon Slayer is a story about perseverance, resilience, and unwavering determination. The main character, Tanjiro Kamado, faces overwhelming obstacles and heartbreaking challenges, yet he never allows them to define or defeat him. Instead, he approaches every setback with humility, respect, and a relentless drive to improve. Watching his journey taught me an important lesson: that growth comes not from avoiding difficulty, but from meeting it head-on with perseverance and a positive mindset.
This message resonated deeply with me during a time when I needed it most. Before discovering Demon Slayer, I struggled with motivation and often found myself stuck in unhealthy routines. I wanted to change, but I lacked direction and consistency. Seeing Tanjiro’s dedication — his commitment to training, his refusal to give up, and his belief that hard work pays off — made me reflect on my own life. If a fictional character could embody such strength and determination, then I knew I could strive for the same qualities in reality.
Inspired by Tanjiro’s example, I decided to take control of my own story. I began working out regularly, pushing myself beyond what I thought I was capable of. What started as a small attempt to improve my health quickly grew into a deep passion for fitness. Over time, I developed discipline, confidence, and a strong sense of purpose. Working out became more than just a physical activity — it became a way for me to challenge myself, build resilience, and continuously strive for self-improvement.
This transformation has shaped my goals for the future. I now aspire to become a certified personal trainer so I can help others discover their own strength and potential, just as I did. I want to motivate people to believe in themselves, push past their limits, and embrace healthier lifestyles. In many ways, my journey mirrors the lessons I learned from Demon Slayer: with dedication, respect, and perseverance, anything is possible.
Although Demon Slayer is not a movie, its impact on my life is greater than any film I have ever seen. It taught me to never give up, to approach challenges with determination, and to continuously seek growth. Most importantly, it helped me discover a passion that has become central to who I am and what I hope to achieve. This story may be animated, but the lessons it has taught me are very real — and they continue to guide me every day as I work toward my goals and inspire others to do the same.
Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
I have always been drawn to leadership, not in the sense of holding a title, but in the ability to inspire, motivate, and guide others to reach their full potential. I have a natural passion for connecting with people, understanding their goals, and pushing them to become the best versions of themselves. Fitness has become the perfect platform for me to express this passion. I love helping others overcome challenges, whether it is building strength, improving endurance, or developing confidence, and I take pride in seeing the progress and transformation that comes from consistent effort and guidance.
My journey in fitness has shaped not only my own character but also my ability to lead and mentor others. Through discipline, perseverance, and resilience, I have learned how to set goals and work tirelessly to achieve them. These same qualities allow me to guide others, showing them that with hard work and dedication, they too can reach their goals. I thrive knowing that my guidance can help someone achieve something they once thought impossible. This drive led me to pursue national certification through NASM, giving me the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to train others safely and effectively.
Leadership, is more than giving instructions; it is about lifting others up and helping them see their own potential. I take every opportunity to motivate those around me—friends, family, or clients—and approach every interaction with empathy, patience, and a genuine desire to see people succeed. My dream is to become a personal trainer, dedicating my career to improving the health and well-being of others. I want to create positive change in people’s lives by teaching them not just how to train, but how to develop self-discipline, confidence, and a mindset focused on growth.
Receiving this scholarship would be a crucial step in helping me achieve this dream. It would provide the resources I need to further my education, expand my knowledge, and refine my skills, ultimately allowing me to serve more people and make a greater impact. I am committed to using this opportunity responsibly, ensuring that every dollar contributes to my growth and the lives I will touch. Every lesson I learn, every skill I gain, and every achievement I earn will directly translate into the guidance and support I offer others. This scholarship is not just an investment in me, but in the countless individuals whose lives I hope to transform.
Seeing someone gain confidence, overcome limitations, or achieve a milestone they never thought possible is the most rewarding part of what I do, and it drives me to continue pushing myself and others to excel. My leadership is rooted in relentless commitment to helping others succeed. Through fitness, mentorship, and guidance, I aim to positively impact my community and inspire people to embrace their potential. With this scholarship, I will be able to continue building my abilities, leading by example, and helping people become the best versions of themselves.

My passion for fitness, my dedication to helping people, and my commitment to guiding others toward their goals have shaped me into a leader who thrives on inspiring and motivating those around me. This scholarship represents an invaluable opportunity to further my education, enhance my skills, and continue my mission of transforming lives.
