Little Bundle Supermom Scholarship — High School Award
Identity is a powerful word most often used with strong emotive purpose. Pride is another. With six siblings, an absent father, and a single mother, I felt as though I had lost any sense of identity. What was there to be proud of? Going through family court, therapy, and Child Protective Services, my family reached the lowest we had ever been. My mother, during this time, dedicated herself to supporting and encouraging her children to achieve greatness. This looked an awful lot like embarrassing us at school award ceremonies, appearing at promotions and graduations for my older siblings, and exhibiting our accomplishments in picture frames to show how proud she is of all seven of us to anyone and everyone that might come to visit. My mother graduated high school with her GED and attended some 2-Year college as she tried to get back on her feet after suffering 20 years in an abusive marriage. This inspired my siblings and I to do everything within our power to succeed. No matter what obstacles we faced: economic disadvantage, burnout, or psychological drawbacks, we persevered and surpassed any challenges. Although it isn't what we’d hoped for, our life-style became our identity; despite what my family comes from, I am proud to be where I am today. Without the support of my mother, not only would I lack identity, but also the inspiration I needed to take hold of my life and guide myself to where I want to be. I’m fighting for my future the same way my mom fought for our family. After all, how could I not be proud to come from such a courageous background?
