When people think of extracurricular activities, they often imagine activities separate from real life. However, for me, my extracurriculars are my life. Hula and community service have not only filled my time during and after school, but have also shaped my identity, strengthened my character, and defined my future.
One of the most influential activities in my life is hula. As a member of Halau Hula 'O Hokulani, I have grown not only as a dancer but as a leader. Hula has taught me discipline, humility, and responsibility. Under the guidance of my kumu hula, Leinani DeRego Lauaki and Kehaulani Kawai, I learned that every movement carries history and every chant carries meaning. I also learned that knowledge is not meant to be kept; it is intended to be shared.
My role in hula extends beyond performing. I assist in teaching younger students, helping them learn choreography, timing, and stage presence. However, I also help prepare them with confidence, respect, and pride in their identity. Watching a shy child slowly gain confidence over time reminds me of my own growth. In these moments, I realized that I do not just love hula - I love guiding others through it. This experience sparked my desire to pursue a career in Education.
In addition to hula, community service has profoundly shaped who I am. I have completed over 200 hours of volunteer work through the Lawrence & Hokulani De Rego Foundation, Halau Hula 'O Hokulani, Aged to Perfection, and Lanakila Pacific. My responsibilities have included assisting at cultural events, supporting competitions, helping with arts and crafts activities, and engaging with kupuna and individuals with diverse abilities through games and creative projects.
Through this work, I developed patience, empathy, and adaptability. Working with kupuna taught me the value of listening. Supporting individuals with diverse abilities taught me that leadership is not about speaking the loudest, but about meeting people where they are. Volunteering at significant cultural events taught me teamwork and accountability, especially when working behind the scenes to ensure everything ran smoothly.
Perhaps the most important lesson I learned through my extracurricular activities is that leadership is rooted in service. I began my journey as someone shy and hesitant to step forward. Over time, I shifted my focus outward. Instead of worrying about how I was perceived, I focused on how I could help. That shift changed everything. I grew more confident, more compassionate, and more committed to giving back to my community.
These lessons have directly shaped my post-high school plans. I plan to earn an Associate of Arts degree in Hawaiian Studies at Leeward Community College, followed by a Bachelor's degree in Hawaiian Studies, while simultaneously pursuing a Master's degree in Education at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. As of now, I have been accepted to Kapi'olani Community College and Windward Community College. My ultimate goal is to become a Hawaiiana teacher.
I chose this path because I have witnessed the power of cultural education. When students understand where they come from, they stand taller. They develop pride, responsibility, and a sense of belonging. I want to be the teacher who not only teaches history but also helps students see themselves within it. I want to create a classroom where culture is not discussed - it is honored and lived.
Hula taught me the importance of preserving traditions. Volunteer service taught me the importance of uplifting people. Together, they prepared me for a career dedicated to both. The discipline I developed, balancing academics, service, and family responsibilities, will support me through the demands of higher Education. The empathy and communication skills I cultivated will guide me as an educator. The leadership I discovered within myself allows me to advocate for my future students and community.
Being well-rounded is not about collecting activities; it is about allowing experiences to shape your purpose. My extracurriculars did not simply prepare me for future success - they defined what success means to me. Success is returning home with knowledge. Success is empowering the next generation. Success is honoring the culture that raised me.
Through every dance, every volunteer opportunity, and every child I have helped guide, I have discovered who I am and who I strive to become. I am not just preparing for a career - I am preparing for a responsibility I am ready to carry upon my shoulders. I will carry Hawai'i everywhere I go, ensuring that our history, values, and identity remain strong in the hearts of future generations.
