In my life I have overcame adversity and hardship by watching my mom struggle through an abusive marriage. I was young but looking back I can see the difference he made in my mom and how much she has worked to get to where she is today. The adversity I faced in this situation was from my mother because I had to fight for her to leave him. We would argue constantly and I remember running to my room and to cry most nights. I believe this was because I did not truly understand what was going on and why my mom was staying, but I knew she was different than before. It is always hard for someone in that situation to leave because the abuser convinced them they do not deserve better. My mom eventually found her strength to leave him and she is a much better, stronger person today for doing so. The experience of helping my mom escape this relationship and fighting the adversity from her as she fought to stay in it, has prepared me to work in criminal justice system because it has helped me understand the victims of these crimes on a deeper level. It is much easier to under people’s pain when you have had first hand experience with similar situations to the one they are suffering through. Although, I was not the actual victim in this situation I feel I was put through enough hardship to understand what the real victims are feeling within their own hardships. The most difficult part for people in tough family situations is making the decision to reach out and get help. It is extremely scary to go behind your abusers back and most victims are scared of what will be done if the abuser finds out. My goal as a criminal justice lawyer would be to make the victims feel as comfortable as possible. They deserve all the comfort and help I can give them after what they have endured and survived through. I want to work in a criminal justice law firm in a big city with many different types of people. I feel this will allow me to help as many victims possible and also develop me into a well rounded attorney. After working in the system for a while, I hope to have my own law firm where I can help victims for significantly less money. I also hope to employ people of all backgrounds and ethnicities because it does not matter where you come from, only the skills you possess will help you be successful as a lawyer. My law firm will help many victims feel comfortable and welcome. Wherever I do end up I truly hope to make a difference in the community and make sure that any victim knows it is okay to reach out and get the help you deserve.
